And Balak the son of Zippor [was] king of the Moabites at that time. For they [are] too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall prevail so that we may strike them, and so that I may drive them out of the land. 7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midiandeparted with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.[x]MKJV: And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian pulled up with the rewards of divination in their hand. And they came to Balaam and spoke the words of Balak to him. BBE: So the responsible men of Moab and Midian went away, taking in their hands rewards for the prophet; and they came to Balaam and said to him what Balak had given them orders to say. 7 So the responsible men of Moab and Midian went away, taking in their hands rewards for the prophet; and they came to Balaam and said to him what Balak had given them orders to say.

8 And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you wordagain, as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moababode with Balaam.[x]MKJV: And he said to them, stay here tonight, and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak to me. And the leaders of Moab stayed with Balaam. BBE: And he said to them, Take your rest here tonight, and I will give you an answer after hearing what the Lord says; so the chiefs of Moab kept there with Balaam that night. 9 And God came to Balaam and said, Who are these men with you?

10 And Balaam said to God, Balak, the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent them to me, saying,

11 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.[x]MKJV: Behold! A people has come out of Egypt which covers the face of the earth. Come now, curse them for me. Perhaps, I shall be able to overcome them and drive them out. BBE: See, the people who have come out of Egypt are covering all the earth: now, put a curse on this people for me, so that I may be able to make war on them, driving them out of the land. 12 And Godsaid unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they areblessed.[x]MKJV: And God said to Balaam, You shall not go with them. You shall not curse the people, for they [are] blessed. BBE: And God said to Balaam, You are not to go with them, or put a curse on this people, for they have my blessing. BBE: In the morning Balaam got up and said to the chiefs of Balak, Go back to your land, for the Lord will not let me go with you. 13 In the morning Balaam got up and said to the chiefs of Balak, Go back to your land, for the Lord will not let me go with you.

14 So the chiefs of Moab went back to Balak and said, Balaam will not come with us.

16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saithBalak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:[x]MKJV: And they came to Balaam and said to him, So says Balak the son of Zippor, Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me. 16 And they came to Balaam and said, Balak, son of Zippor, says, Let nothing keep you from coming to me:

17 For I will promote thee unto verygreathonour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.[x]MKJV: For I will raise you up to very great honor, and I will do whatever you say to me. Please come then and curse this people for me. BBE: For I will give you a place of very great honour, and whatever you say to me I will do; so come, in answer to my prayer, and put a curse on this people. 18 And Balaamanswered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his housefull of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to doless or more.[x]MKJV: And Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more. BBE: But Balaam, in answer; said to the servants of Balak, Even if Balak gave me his house full of silver and gold, it would not be possible for me to do anything more or less than the orders of the Lord my God. 19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.[x]MKJV: But please now stay here also this night so that I may know what more the LORD will say to me. 20 And Godcame unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the mencome to call thee, rise up, andgo with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.[x]MKJV: And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, If the men come to call you, rise up, go with them. But still, the word which I shall say to you, that you shall do. BBE: And that night God came to Balaam and said to him, If these men have come for you, go with them: but do only what I say to you. 28 And the LORDopened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these threetimes?[x]MKJV: And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said to Balaam, What have I done to you, that you have beaten me these three times? 28 Then the Lord gave the ass the power of talking, and opening her mouth she said to Balaam, What have I done to you that you have given me blows these three times?

29 And Balaamsaid unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.[x]MKJV: And Balaam said to the ass, Because you have mocked me. I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you. BBE: And Balaam said to the ass, You have made me seem foolish: if only I had a sword in my hand I would put you to death. 29 And Balaam said to the ass, You have made me seem foolish: if only I had a sword in my hand I would put you to death.

30 And the asssaid unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I everwont to do so unto thee? And he said, No. BBE: And the ass said to Balaam, Am I not your ass upon which you have gone all your life till this day? and have I ever done this to you before? 30 And the ass said to Balaam, Am I not your ass upon which you have gone all your life till this day? and have I ever done this to you before? And he said, No.

31 Then the LORDopened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORDstanding in the way, and his sworddrawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.[x]MKJV: Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the Angel of the LORD standing in the way, and His sword drawn in His hand. 32 And the angel of the LORDsaid unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these threetimes? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thyway is perverse before me:[x]MKJV: And the Angel of the LORD said to him, Why have you beaten your ass these three times? Behold! I went out to be an enemy to you, because your [way] is perverse before Me. BBE: And the angel of the Lord said to him, Why have you given your ass blows these three times? See, I have come out against you to keep you back, because your purpose is not pleasing to me. 33 And the asssaw me, and turned from me these threetimes: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.[x]MKJV: And the ass saw Me and turned from Me these three times. Unless she had turned from Me, surely now I also would have killed you and saved her alive. BBE: And the ass saw me, turning to one side from me three times: if she had not gone to one side, I would certainly have put you to death and kept her safe. 33 And the ass saw me, turning to one side from me three times: if she had not gone to one side, I would certainly have put you to death and kept her safe.

34 And Balaamsaid unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the wayagainst me: now therefore, if it displease theeㆍ, I will get me back again.[x]MKJV: And Balaam said to the Angel of the LORD, I have sinned. For I did not know that You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displeases You, I will go back again. BBE: And Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, I have done wrong, for I did not see that you were in the way against me: but now, if it is evil in your eyes, I will go back again. 35 And the angel of the LORDsaid unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaamwent with the princes of Balak.[x]MKJV: And the Angel of the LORD said to Balaam, Go with the men. But only the word that I shall speak to you, that you shall speak. So Balaam went with the leaders of Balak. BBE: And the angel of the Lord said to Balaam, Go with the men; but say only what I give you to say. Then Balaam went on with the chiefs of Balak. 36 And when Balakheard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmostcoast.[x]MKJV: And when Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him, to a city of Moab, in the border of Arnon, which [is] in the outermost border. BBE: Now Balak, hearing that Balaam had come, went to the chief town of Moab, on the edge of the Arnon, in the farthest part of the land, for the purpose of meeting him. Why did you not come to me? Am I not able indeed to lift you up to honor? BBE: And Balak said to Balaam, Did I not send to you, requesting you with all my heart to come to me? why did you not come? am I not able to give you a place of honour? 37 And Balak said to Balaam, Did I not send to you, requesting you with all my heart to come to me? why did you not come? am I not able to give you a place of honour?

38 And Balaamsaid unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that Godputteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.[x]MKJV: And Balaam said to Balak, Lo, I have come to you. Have I now any power at all to say anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that I shall speak. BBE: Then Balaam said to Balak, Now I have come to you; but have I power to say anything? 39 And Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath-huzoth.

40 And Balakofferedoxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.[x]MKJV: And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam and to the leaders [that were] with him.
