11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? 12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.	12 But when the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer.	12 대제사장들과 장로들에게 고소를 당하되 아무 대답도 아니하시는지라

13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?	13 Then says Pilate to him, Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you?	13 이에 빌라도가 이르되 저희가 너를 쳐서 얼마나 많은 것으로 증거하는지 듣지 못하느냐 하되

14 And he answered ㆍ him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.	14 And he gave him no answer, not even a word: so that the ruler was greatly surprised.	14 한마디도 대답지 아니하시니 총독이 심히 기이히 여기더라

15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.	15 Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection.	15 명절을 당하면 총독이 무리의 소원대로 죄수 하나를 놓아 주는 전례가 있더니

16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.	16 And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas.	16 그 때에 바라바라 하는 유명한 죄수가 있는데

17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?	17 So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is named Christ?	17 저희가 모였을 때에 빌라도가 물어 가로되 너희는 내가 누구를 너희에게 놓아 주기를 원하느냐 바라바냐 그리스도라 하는 예수냐 하니

18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.	18 For he saw that for envy they had given him up.	18 이는 저가 그들의 시기로 예수를 넘겨준줄 앎이러라

19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying ㆍ, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.	19 And while he was on the judge's seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him.	19 총독이 재판 자리에 앉았을 때에 그 아내가 사람을 보내어 가로되 저 옳은 사람에게 아무 상관도 하지 마옵소서 오늘 꿈에 내가 그 사람을 인하여 애를 많이 썼나이다 하더라

20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.	20 Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death.	20 대제사장들과 장로들이 무리를 권하여 바라바를 달라 하게 하고 예수를 멸하자 하게 하였더니

21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? ㆍ They said, Barabbas.	21 But the ruler made answer and said to them, Which of the two is it your pleasure that I let go free? And they said, Barabbas.	21 총독이 대답하여 가로되 둘 중에 누구를 너희에게 놓아 주기를 원하느냐 가로되 바라바로소이다

22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.	22 Pilate says to them, What, then, am I to do with Jesus, who is named Christ? They all say, Let him be put to death on the cross.	22 빌라도가 가로되 그러면 그리스도라 하는 예수를 내가 어떻게 하랴 저희가 다 가로되 십자가에 못 박혀야 하겠나이다

23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.	23 And he said, Why, what evil has he done? But they gave loud cries, saying, To the cross with him!	23 빌라도가 가로되 어찜이뇨 무슨 악한 일을 하였느냐 저희가 더욱 소리질러 가로되 십자가에 못 박혀야 하겠나이다 하는지라

24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.	24 So when Pilate saw that he was able to do nothing, but that trouble was working up, he took water and, washing his hands before the people, said, The blood of this upright man is not on my hands: you are responsible.	24 빌라도가 아무 효험도 없이 도리어 민란이 나려는 것을 보고 물을 가져다가 무리 앞에서 손을 씻으며 가로되 이 사람의 피에 대하여 나는 무죄하니 너희가 당하라

25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.	25 And all the people made answer and said, Let his blood be on us, and on our children.	25 백성이 다 대답하여 가로되 그 피를 우리와 우리 자손에게 돌릴찌어다 하거늘

26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.	26 Then he let Barabbas go free: but after having Jesus whipped, he gave him up to be put to death on the cross.	26 이에 바라바는 저희에게 놓아주고 예수는 채찍질하고 십자가에 못 박히게 넘겨주니라

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.	27 Then the ruler's armed men took Jesus into the open square, and got all their band together.	27 이에 총독의 군병들이 예수를 데리고 관정 안으로 들어가서 온 군대를 그에게로 모으고

28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.	28 And they took off his clothing, and put on him a red robe.	28 그의 옷을 벗기고 홍포를 입히며

29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!	29 And they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and put a rod in his right hand, and they went down on their knees before him, and made sport of him, saying, Long life to the King of the Jews.	29 가시 면류관을 엮어 그 머리에 씌우고 갈대를 그 오른손에 들리고 그 앞에서 무릎을 꿇고 희롱하여 가로되 유대인의 왕이여 평안할찌어다 하며

30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.	30 And they put shame on him, and gave him blows on the head with the rod.	30 그에게 침 뱉고 갈대를 빼앗아 그의 머리를 치더라

31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.	31 And when they had made sport of him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothing on him, and took him away to put him on the cross.	31 희롱을 다한 후 홍포를 벗기고 도로 그의 옷을 입혀 십자가에 못 박으려고 끌고 나가니라

32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.	32 And while they were coming out, they saw a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they made him go with them, so that he might take up his cross.	32 나가다가 시몬이란 구레네 사람을 만나매 그를 억지로 같이 가게 하여 예수의 십자가를 지웠더라

33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,	33 And when they came to the place named Golgotha, that is to say, Dead Man's Head,	33 골고다 즉 해골의 곳이라는 곳에 이르러

34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.	34 They gave him wine mixed with bitter drink: and after tasting it, he took no more.	34 쓸개탄 포도주를 예수께 주어 마시게 하려 하였더니 예수께서 맛보시고 마시고자 아니 하시더라

35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.	35 And when they had put him on the cross, they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance.	35 저희가 예수를 십자가에 못 박은 후에 그 옷을 제비 뽑아 나누고

36 And sitting down they watched him there;	36 And they were seated there watching him.	36 거기 앉아 지키더라

37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.	37 And they put up over his head the statement of his crime in writing, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.	37 그 머리 위에 이는 유대인의 왕 예수라 쓴 죄패를 붙였더라

38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.	38 Then two thieves were put on crosses with him, one on the right and one on the left.	38 이때에 예수와 함께 강도 둘이 십자가에 못 박히니 하나는 우편에, 하나는 좌편에 있더라

39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,	39 And those who went by said bitter words to him, shaking their heads and saying,	39 지나가는 자들은 자기 머리를 흔들며 예수를 모욕하여

40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.	40 You who would give the Temple to destruction and put it up again in three days, get yourself free: if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.	40 가로되 성전을 헐고 사흘에 짓는 자여 네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 자기를 구원하고 십자가에서 내려오라 하며

41 ㆍ Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,	41 In the same way, the chief priests, making sport of him, with the scribes and those in authority, said,	41 그와 같이 대제사장들도 서기관들과 장로들과 함께 희롱하여 가로되

42 He saved others; himself he cannot ㆍ save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.	42 A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will have faith in him.	42 저가 남은 구원하였으되 자기는 구원할 수 없도다 저가 이스라엘의 왕이로다 지금 십자가에서 내려올찌어다 그러면 우리가 믿겠노라

43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said ㆍ, I am the Son of God.	43 He put his faith in God; let God be his saviour now, if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God.	43 저가 하나님을 신뢰하니 하나님이 저를 기뻐하시면 이제 구원하실찌라 제 말이 나는 하나님의 아들이라 하였도다 하며

44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.	44 And the thieves who were on the crosses said evil words to him.	44 함께 십자가에 못 박힌 강도들도 이와 같이 욕하더라

45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.	45 Now from the sixth hour it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour.	45 제 육시로부터 온 땅에 어두움이 임하여 제 구시까지 계속하더니

46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?	46 And about the ninth hour Jesus gave a loud cry, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me?	46 제 구시 즈음에 예수께서 크게 소리질러 가라사대 엘리 엘리 라마 사박다니 하시니 이는 곧 나의 하나님, 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까 하는 뜻이라

47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said ㆍ, This man calleth for Elias.	47 And some of those who were near by, hearing it, said, This man is crying to Elijah.	47 거기 섰던 자 중 어떤이들이 듣고 가로되 이 사람이 엘리야를 부른다 하고

48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.	48 And straight away one of them went quickly, and took a sponge, and made it full of bitter wine, and put it on a rod and gave him drink.	48 그 중에 한 사람이 곧 달려가서 해융을 가지고 신 포도주를 머금게 하여 갈대에 꿰어 마시우거늘

49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.	49 And the rest said, Let him be; let us see if Elijah will come to his help.	49 그 남은 사람들이 가로되 가만 두어라 엘리야가 와서 저를 구원하나 보자 하더라

50 Jesus, when, he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded, up the ghost.	50 And Jesus gave another loud cry, and gave up his spirit.	50 예수께서 다시 크게 소리지르시고 영혼이 떠나시다

51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;	51 And the curtain of the Temple was parted in two from end to end; and there was an earth-shock; and the rocks were broken;	51 이에 성소 휘장이 위로부터 아래까지 찢어져 둘이 되고 땅이 진동하며 바위가 터지고

52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,	52 And the resting-places of the dead came open; and the bodies of a number of sleeping saints came to life;	52 무덤들이 열리며 자던 성도의 몸이 많이 일어나되

53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.	53 And coming out of their resting-places, after he had come again from the dead, they went into the holy town and were seen by a number of people.	53 예수의 부활 후에 저희가 무덤에서 나와서 거룩한 성에 들어가 많은 사람에게 보이니라

54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.	54 Now the captain and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earth-shock and the things which were done, were in great fear and said, Truly this was a son of God.	54 백부장과 및 함께 예수를 지키던 자들이 지진과 그 되는 일들을 보고 심히 두려워하여 가로되 이는 진실로 하나님의 아들이었도다 하더라

58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.	58 This man went in to Pilate, and made a request for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate gave orders for it to be given to him.	58 빌라도에게 가서 예수의 시체를 달라 하니 이에 빌라도가 내어주라 분부하거늘

59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,	59 And Joseph took the body, folding it in clean linen,	59 요셉이 시체를 가져다가 정한 세마포로 싸서

60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.	60 And put it in the resting-place which had been cut out of the rock for himself; and after rolling a great stone to the door of it he went away.	60 바위 속에 판 자기 새무덤에 넣어 두고 큰 돌을 굴려 무덤 문에 놓고 가니

61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.	61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, seated by the place of the dead.	61 거기 막달라 마리아와 다른 마리아가 무덤을 향하여 앉았더라

63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.	63 Saying, Sir, we have in mind how that false man said, while he was still living, After three days I will come again from the dead.	63 주여 저 유혹하던 자가 살았을 때에 말하되 내가 사흘후에 다시 살아나리라 한 것을 우리가 기억하노니

64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.	64 Give orders, then, that the place where his body is may be made safe till the third day, for fear that his disciples come and take him away secretly and say to the people, He has come back from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first.	64 그러므로 분부하여 그 무덤을 사흘까지 굳게 지키게 하소서 그의 제자들이 와서 시체를 도적질하여 가고 백성에게 말하되 그가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아났다 하면 후의 유혹이 전보다 더 될까 하나이다 하니

65 ㆍ Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.	65 Pilate said to them, You have watchmen; go and make it as safe as you are able.	65 빌라도가 가로되 너희에게 파숫군이 있으니 가서 힘대로 굳게 하라 하거늘

66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.	66 So they went, and made safe the place where his body was, putting a stamp on the stone, and the watchmen were with them.	66 저희가 파숫군과 함께 가서 돌을 인봉하고 무덤을 굳게 하니라

King James English

KJ English(1611년~)는 셰익스피어의 영어문장처럼 현대 영문법과 약간 다릅니다. 하지만 몇 가지 차이만 알면 오히려 요즘 영어문장보다 더 정확한 내용 이해와 문장의 맛을 느낄 수 있습니다.

상대편(2인칭)에게 말할 때 단수, 복수를 구분합니다. 복수(너희)이면 ye, you, your, yours, yourself를, 단수(너)이면 thou, thee, thy, thine, thyself입니다. 요즘 영어와 달리 "너"와 "너희"가 명확히 구분됩니다!
3인칭 현재동사는 -th나 -eth로 끝나는데 요즘 영어문장에서 -s나 -es와 같습니다.
-st나 -est로 끝나는 동사는 직설법을 말하는 데, 생략하고 읽으면 됩니다.
