5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.	5 But Jesus gave no more answers, so that Pilate was full of wonder.	5 예수께서 다시 아무 말씀도 대답지 아니하시니 빌라도가 기이히 여기더라

6 Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.	6 Now at the feast every year he let one prisoner go free at their request.	6 명절을 당하면 백성의 구하는대로 죄수 하나를 놓아 주는 전례가 있더니

7 And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.	7 And there was one named Barabbas, in prison with those who had gone against the government and in the fight had taken life.	7 민란을 꾸미고 이 민란에 살인하고 포박된 자 중에 바라바라 하는 자가 있는지라

8 And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.	8 And the people went up, requesting him to do as he had done for them in other years.	8 무리가 나아가서 전례대로 하여주기를 구한대

9 But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?	9 And Pilate said in answer to them, Is it your desire that I let the King of the Jews go free?	9 빌라도가 대답하여 가로되 너희는 내가 유대인의 왕을 너희에게 놓아 주기를 원하느냐 하니

10 For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.	10 For he saw that the chief priests had given him up through envy.	10 이는 저가 대제사장들이 시기로 예수를 넘겨준줄 앎이러라

11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.	11 But the people were moved by the chief priests to make him let Barabbas go free.	11 그러나 대제사장들이 무리를 충동하여 도리어 바라바를 놓아 달라 하게 하니

12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?	12 And Pilate again said in answer to them, What then am I to do to him to whom you give the name of the King of the Jews?	12 빌라도가 또 대답하여 가로되 그러면 너희가 유대인의 왕이라 하는 이는 내가 어떻게 하랴

13 And they cried out again, Crucify him.	13 And they said again loudly, To the cross with him!	13 저희가 다시 소리지르되 저를 십자가에 못 박게 하소서

14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.	14 And Pilate said to them, Why, what evil has he done? But their cry was the louder, To the cross!	14 빌라도가 가로되 어찜이뇨 무슨 악한 일을 하였느냐 하니 더욱 소리지르되 십자가에 못 박게 하소서 하는지라

15 And so Pilate, willing to content ㆍ the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.	15 And Pilate, desiring to do what was pleasing to the people, let Barabbas go free, and gave up Jesus, when he had been whipped, to be put to death on the cross.	15 빌라도가 무리에게 만족을 주고자 하여 바라바는 놓아 주고 예수는 채찍질하고 십자가에 못 박히게 넘겨주니라

16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.	16 And the men of the army took him away into the square in front of the building which is the Praetorium, and they got together all the band.	16 군병들이 예수를 끌고 브라이도리온이라는 뜰안으로 들어가서 온 군대를 모으고

17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,	17 And they put a purple robe on him, and twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on him;	17 예수에게 자색 옷을 입히고 가시 면류관을 엮어 씌우고

18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!	18 And, as if honouring him, they said, Long life to the King of the Jews!	18 예하여 가로되 유대인의 왕이여 평안할찌어다 하고

19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.	19 And they gave him blows on the head with a stick and put shame on him and, going down on their knees, gave him worship.	19 갈대로 그의 머리를 치며 침을 뱉으며 꿇어 절하더라

20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.	20 And when they had made sport of him, they took the purple robe off him and put his clothing on him. And they took him out to put him to death on the cross.	20 희롱을 다한 후 자색 옷을 벗기고 도로 그의 옷을 입히고 십자가에 못 박으려고 끌고 나가니라

21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.	21 And they made one, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who was going by, coming from the country, go with them, so that he might take his cross.	21 마침 알렉산더와 루포의 아비인 구레네 사람 시몬이 시골로서 와서 지나가는데 저희가 그를 억지로 같이 가게 하여 예수의 십자가를 지우고

22 And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.	22 And they took him to the place named Golgotha, which is, Dead Man's Head.	22 예수를 끌고 골고다라 하는 곳(번역하면 해골의 곳)에 이르러

23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.	23 And they gave him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it.	23 몰약을 탄 포도주를 주었으나 예수께서 받지 아니하시니라

24 And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.	24 And he was nailed to the cross; and they made a division of his clothing among them, putting to the decision of chance what everyone was to take.	24 십자가에 못 박고 그 옷을 나눌쌔 누가 어느 것을 얻을까 하여 제비를 뽑더라

25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.	25 And it was the third hour when they put him on the cross.	25 때가 제삼시가 되어 십자가에 못 박으니라

26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.	26 And the statement of his crime was put in writing on the cross, THE KING OF THE JEWS.	26 그 위에 있는 죄 패에 유대인의 왕이라 썼고

27 And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.	27 And they put two thieves on crosses with him, one on his right side, and one on his left.	27 강도 둘을 예수와 함께 십자가에 못 박으니 하나는 그의 우편에, 하나는 좌편에 있더라

28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.	28 []	28 (없음)

29 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,	29 And those who went by made sport of him, shaking their heads, and saying, Ha! you who give the Temple to destruction, and put it up again in three days,	29 지나가는 자들은 자기 머리를 흔들며 예수를 모욕하여 가로되 아하 성전을 헐고 사흘에 짓는 자여

30 Save thyself, and come down from the cross.	30 Keep yourself from death, and come down from the cross.	30 네가 너를 구원하여 십자가에서 내려 오라 하고

31 Likewise ㆍ also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot ㆍ save.	31 In the same way the chief priests, laughing at him among themselves with the scribes, said, A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself.	31 그와 같이 대제사장들도 서기관들과 함께 희롱하며 서로 말하되 저가 남은 구원하였으되 자기는 구원할 수 없도다

32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.	32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and have belief. And those who were put on crosses with him said evil things against him.	32 이스라엘의 왕 그리스도가 지금 십자가에서 내려와 우리로 보고 믿게 할찌어다 하며 함께 십자가에 못 박힌 자들도 예수를 욕하더라

33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.	33 And when the sixth hour had come, it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour.	33 제 육시가 되매 온 땅에 어두움이 임하여 제 구시까지 계속하더니

34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?	34 And at the ninth hour, Jesus said in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me?	34 제 구시에 예수께서 크게 소리지르시되 엘리 엘리 라마 사박다니 하시니 이를 번역하면 나의 하나님 나의 하나님 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까 하는 뜻이라

35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.	35 And some of those who were near, hearing it, said, See, he is crying to Elijah.	35 곁에 섰던 자 중 어떤이들이 듣고 가로되 보라 엘리야를 부른다 하고

36 And one ran and filled a sponge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.	36 And one of them went quickly and, getting a sponge full of bitter wine, put it on a rod, and gave it to him for drink, saying, Let be; let us see if Elijah will come to take him down.	36 한 사람이 달려가서 해융에 신포도주를 머금게 하여 갈대에 꿰어 마시우고 가로되 가만 두어라 엘리야가 와서 저를 내려 주나 보자 하더라

37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.	37 And Jesus gave a loud cry, and gave up his spirit.	37 예수께서 큰 소리를 지르시고 운명하시다

38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.	38 And the curtain of the Temple was parted in two from end to end.	38 이에 성소 휘장이 위로부터 아래까지 찢어져 둘이 되니라

39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.	39 And when the captain, who was near, saw how he gave up his spirit, he said, Truly this man was a son of God.	39 예수를 향하여 섰던 백부장이 그렇게 운명하심을 보고 가로되 이 사람은 진실로 하나님의 아들이었도다 하더라

40 There were also women looking on afar off: among ㆍ whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;	40 And there were women watching from a distance: among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome,	40 멀리서 바라보는 여자들도 있는데 그 중에 막달라 마리아와 또 작은 야고보와 요세의 어머니 마리아와 또 살로메가 있었으니

41 (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.	41 Who went with him when he was in Galilee and took care of him; and a number of other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.	41 이들은 예수께서 갈릴리에 계실 때에 좇아 섬기던 자요 또 이 외에도 예수와 함께 예루살렘에 올라온 여자가 많이 있었더라

43 Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also ㆍ waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.	43 There came Joseph of Arimathaea, a responsible man in high honour, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God; and he went in to Pilate without fear, and made a request for the body of Jesus.	43 아리마대 사람 요셉이 와서 당돌히 빌라도에게 들어가 예수의 시체를 달라 하니 이 사람은 존귀한 공회원이요 하나님의 나라를 기다리는 자라

44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.	44 And Pilate was surprised that he was dead; and, sending for the captain, he put a question to see if he had been dead for long.	44 빌라도는 예수께서 벌써 죽었을까 하고 이상히 여겨 백부장을 불러 죽은지 오래냐 묻고

45 And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.	45 And when he had news of it from the captain, he let Joseph have the body.	45 백부장에게 알아 본 후에 요셉에게 시체를 내어 주는지라

46 And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.	46 And he got a linen cloth and, taking him down, put the linen cloth round him, and put him in a place for the dead which had been cut out of a rock; and a stone was rolled against the door.	46 요셉이 세마포를 사고 예수를 내려다가 이것으로 싸서 바위 속에 판 무덤에 넣어 두고 돌을 굴려 무덤 문에 놓으매

King James English

KJ English(1611년~)는 셰익스피어의 영어문장처럼 현대 영문법과 약간 다릅니다. 하지만 몇 가지 차이만 알면 오히려 요즘 영어문장보다 더 정확한 내용 이해와 문장의 맛을 느낄 수 있습니다.

상대편(2인칭)에게 말할 때 단수, 복수를 구분합니다. 복수(너희)이면 ye, you, your, yours, yourself를, 단수(너)이면 thou, thee, thy, thine, thyself입니다. 요즘 영어와 달리 "너"와 "너희"가 명확히 구분됩니다!
3인칭 현재동사는 -th나 -eth로 끝나는데 요즘 영어문장에서 -s나 -es와 같습니다.
-st나 -est로 끝나는 동사는 직설법을 말하는 데, 생략하고 읽으면 됩니다.
