4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;	4 But they said nothing. And he made him well and sent him away.	4 저희가 잠잠하거늘 예수께서 그 사람을 데려다가 고쳐 보내시고

5 And answered them ㆍ, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?	5 And he said to them, Which of you, whose ox or ass has got into a water-hole, will not straight away get him out on the Sabbath?	5 또 저희에게 이르시되 너희 중에 누가 그 아들이나 소나 우물에 빠졌으면 안식일에라도 곧 끌어내지 않겠느냐 하시니

6 And they could not answer him again to these things.	6 And they had no answer to that question.	6 저희가 이에 대하여 대답지 못하니라

7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,	7 And he gave teaching in the form of a story to the guests who came to the feast, when he saw how they took the best seats; saying to them,	7 청함을 받은 사람들의 상좌 택함을 보시고 저희에게 비유로 말씀하여 가라사대

8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;	8 When you get a request to come to a feast, do not take the best seat, for a more important man than you may be coming,	8 네가 누구에게나 혼인 잔치에 청함을 받았을 때에 상좌에 앉지 말라 그렇지 않으면 너보다 더 높은 사람이 청함을 받은 경우에

9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.	9 And then the giver of the feast will come to you and say, Give your place to this man; and you, with shame, will have to take the lowest seat.	9 너와 저를 청한 자가 와서 너더러 이 사람에게 자리를 내어 주라 하리니 그 때에 네가 부끄러워 말석으로 가게 되리라

10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.	10 But when you come, go and take the lowest seat, so that when the giver of the feast comes, he may say to you, Friend, come up higher; and then you will have honour in the eyes of all the others who are there.	10 청함을 받았을 때에 차라리 가서 말석에 앉으라 그러면 너를 청한 자가 와서 너더러 벗이여 올라 앉으라 하리니 그 때에야 함께 앉은 모든 사람 앞에 영광이 있으리라

11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.	11 For every man who gives himself a high place will be put down, but he who takes a low place will be lifted up.	11 무릇 자기를 높이는 자는 낮아지고 자기를 낮추는 자는 높아지리라

12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee.	12 And he said to the master of the house, When you give a feast, do not send for your friends and your brothers and your family or your neighbours who have wealth, for they may give a feast for you, and so you will get a reward.	12 또 자기를 청한 자에게 이르시되 네가 점심이나 저녁이나 베풀거든 벗이나 형제나 친척이나 부한 이웃을 청하지 말라 두렵건대 그 사람들이 너를 도로 청하여 네게 갚음이 될까 하라

13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:	13 But when you give a feast, send for the poor and the blind and those who are broken in body:	13 잔치를 배설하거든 차라리 가난한 자들과 병신들과 저는 자들과 소경들을 청하라

14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot ㆍ recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.	14 And you will have a blessing, because they will not be able to give you any payment, and you will get your reward when the upright come back from the dead.	14 그리하면 저희가 갚을 것이 없는고로 네게 복이 되리니 이는 의인들의 부활시에 네가 갚음을 받겠음이니라 하시더라

15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.	15 And, hearing these words, one of those who were at table with him said to him, Happy is the man who will be a guest in the kingdom of God.	15 함께 먹는 사람 중에 하나가 이 말을 듣고 이르되 무릇 하나님의 나라에서 떡을 먹는 자는 복되도다 하니

16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:	16 And he said to them, A certain man gave a great feast, and sent word of it to a number of people.	16 이르시되 어떤 사람이 큰 잔치를 배설하고 많은 사람을 청하였더니

17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.	17 And when the time had come, he sent his servants to say to them, Come, for all things are now ready.	17 잔치할 시간에 그 청하였던 자들에게 종을 보내어 가로되 오소서 모든 것이 준비되었나이다 하매

18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.	18 And they all gave reasons why they were not able to come. The first said to him, I have got a new field, and it is necessary for me to go and see it: I am full of regret that I am unable to come.	18 다 일치하게 사양하여 하나는 가로되 나는 밭을 샀으매 불가불 나가 보아야 하겠으니 청컨대 나를 용서하도록 하라 하고

19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.	19 And another said, I have got some cattle, and I am going to make a test of them: I am full of regret that I am unable to come.	19 또 하나는 가로되 나는 소 다섯 겨리를 샀으매 시험하러 가니 청컨대 나를 용서하도록 하라 하고

20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot ㆍ come.	20 And another said, I have been married, and so I am not able to come.	20 또 하나는 가로되 나는 장가 들었으니 그러므로 가지 못하겠노라 하는지라

21 So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.	21 And the servant came back and gave his master an account of these things. Then the master of the house was angry and said to the servant, Go out quickly into the streets of the town and get the poor, the blind, and those who are broken in body.	21 종이 돌아와 주인에게 그대로 고하니 이에 집주인이 노하여 그 종에게 이르되 빨리 시내의 거리와 골목으로 나가서 가난한 자들과 병신들과 소경들과 저는 자들을 데려오라 하니라

22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.	22 And the servant said, Lord, your orders have been done, and still there is room.	22 종이 가로되 주인이여 명하신대로 하였으되 오히려 자리가 있나이다

23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.	23 And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the roads and the fields, and make them come in, so that my house may be full.	23 주인이 종에게 이르되 길과 산울 가로 나가서 사람을 강권하여 데려다가 내 집을 채우라

24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.	24 For I say to you that not one of those who were requested to come will have a taste of my feast.	24 내가 너희에게 말하노니 전에 청하였던 그 사람은 하나도 내 잔치를 맛보지 못하리라 하였다 하시니라

25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,	25 Now a great number of people went with him.	25 허다한 무리가 함께 갈쌔 예수께서 돌이키사 이르시되

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot ㆍ be my disciple.	26 And turning round, he said to them, If any man comes to me, and has not hate for his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and even for his life, he may not be my disciple.	26 무릇 내게 오는 자가 자기 부모와 처자와 형제와 자매와 및 자기 목숨까지 미워하지 아니하면 능히 나의 제자가 되지 못하고

27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot ㆍ be my disciple.	27 Whoever does not take up his cross and come after me may not be my disciple.	27 누구든지 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 좇지 않는 자도 능히 나의 제자가 되지 못하리라

28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?	28 For which of you, desiring to put up a tower, does not first give much thought to the price, if he will have enough to make it complete?	28 너희 중에 누가 망대를 세우고자 할찐대 자기의 가진 것이 준공하기까지에 족할는지 먼저 앉아 그 비용을 예산하지 아니하겠느냐

29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,	29 For fear that if he makes a start and is not able to go on with it to the end, all who see it will be laughing at him,	29 그렇게 아니하여 그 기초만 쌓고 능히 이루지 못하면 보는 자가 다 비웃어

30 Saying, This ㆍ man began to build, and was not able to finish.	30 And saying, This man made a start at building and is not able to make it complete.	30 가로되 이 사람이 역사를 시작하고 능히 이루지 못하였다 하리라

31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?	31 Or what king, going to war with another king, will not first take thought if he will be strong enough, with ten thousand men, to keep off him who comes against him with twenty thousand?	31 또 어느 임금이 다른 임금과 싸우러 갈 때에 먼저 앉아 일만으로서 저 이만을 가지고 오는 자를 대적할 수 있을까 헤아리지 아니하겠느냐

32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.	32 Or while the other is still a great distance away, he sends representatives requesting conditions of peace.	32 만일 못할터이면 저가 아직 멀리 있을 동안에 사신을 보내어 화친을 청할찌니라

33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath ㆍ, he cannot ㆍ be my disciple.	33 And so whoever is not ready to give up all he has may not be my disciple.	33 이와 같이 너희 중에 누구든지 자기의 모든 소유를 버리지 아니하면 능히 내 제자가 되지 못하리라

34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?	34 For salt is good, but if the taste goes from it, of what use is it?	34 소금이 좋은 것이나 소금도 만일 그 맛을 잃었으면 무엇으로 짜게 하리요

35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.	35 It is no good for the land or for the place of waste; no one has a use for it. He who has ears, let him give ear.	35 땅에도, 거름에도 쓸데 없어 내어버리느니라 들을 귀가 있는 자는 들을찌어다 하시니라

KJ English(1611년~)는 셰익스피어의 영어문장처럼 현대 영문법과 약간 다릅니다. 하지만 몇 가지 차이만 알면 오히려 요즘 영어문장보다 더 정확한 내용 이해와 문장의 맛을 느낄 수 있습니다.

상대편(2인칭)에게 말할 때 단수, 복수를 구분합니다. 복수(너희)이면 ye, you, your, yours, yourself를, 단수(너)이면 thou, thee, thy, thine, thyself입니다. 요즘 영어와 달리 "너"와 "너희"가 명확히 구분됩니다!
3인칭 현재동사는 -th나 -eth로 끝나는데 요즘 영어문장에서 -s나 -es와 같습니다.
-st나 -est로 끝나는 동사는 직설법을 말하는 데, 생략하고 읽으면 됩니다.
