1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.	1 At that time, when thousands of the people had come together, in such numbers that they were crushing one another, he said first to his disciples, Have nothing to do with the leaven of the Pharisees, which is deceit.	1 그 동안에 무리 수만 명이 모여 서로 밟힐만큼 되었더니 예수께서 먼저 제자들에게 말씀하여 가라사대 바리새인들의 누룩 곧 외식을 주의하라

3 Therefore ㆍ whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.	3 So, whatever you have said in the dark, will come to men's hearing in the light, and what you have said secretly inside the house, will be made public from the house-tops.	3 이러므로 너희가 어두운데서 말한 모든 것이 광명한데서 들리고 너희가 골방에서 귀에 대고 말한 것이 집 위에서 전파되리라

4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no ㆍ more that they can do.	4 And I say to you, my friends, Have no fear of those who may put the body to death, and are able to do no more than that.	4 내가 내 친구 너희에게 말하노니 몸을 죽이고 그 후에는 능히 더 못하는 자들을 두려워하지 말라

5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.	5 But I will make clear to you of whom you are to be in fear: of him who after death has power to send you to hell; yes, truly I say, Have fear of him.	5 마땅히 두려워할 자를 내가 너희에게 보이리니 곧 죽인 후에 또한 지옥에 던져 넣는 권세 있는 그를 두려워하라 내가 참으로 너희에게 이르노니 그를 두려워하라

6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?	6 Are not five sparrows given in exchange for two farthings? and God has every one of them in mind.	6 참새 다섯이 앗사리온 둘에 팔리는 것이 아니냐 그러나 하나님 앞에는 그 하나라도 잊어버리시는바 되지 아니하는도다

7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.	7 But even the hairs of your head are numbered. Have no fear: you are of more value than a flock of sparrows.	7 너희에게는 오히려 머리털까지도 다 세신바 되었나니 두려워하지 말라 너희는 많은 참새보다 귀하니라

8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever ㆍ shall confess ㆍ me before men ㆍ, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:	8 And I say to you that to everyone who gives witness to me before men, the Son of man will give witness before the angels of God.	8 내가 또한 너희에게 말하노니 누구든지 사람 앞에서 나를 시인하면 인자도 하나님의 사자들 앞에서 저를 시인할 것이요

9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.	9 But if anyone says before men that he has no knowledge of me, I will say that I have no knowledge of him before the angels of God.	9 사람 앞에서 나를 부인하는 자는 하나님의 사자들 앞에서 부인함을 받으리라

10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.	10 And if anyone says a word against the Son of man, he will have forgiveness: but for him who says evil words against the Holy Spirit, there will be no forgiveness.	10 누구든지 말로 인자를 거역하면 사하심을 받으려니와 성령을 모독하는 자는 사하심을 받지 못하리라

11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:	11 And when they take you before the Synagogues and the authorities and the rulers, take no thought about what answers you will give, or what you will say:	11 사람이 너희를 회당과 정사 잡은 이와 권세 있는 이 앞에 끌고 가거든 어떻게 무엇으로 대답하며 무엇으로 말할 것을 염려치 말라

12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.	12 For the Holy Spirit will make clear to you in that very hour what to say.	12 마땅히 할 말을 성령이 곧 그 때에 너희에게 가르치시리라 하시니라

13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.	13 And one of the people said to him, Master, give an order to my brother to make division of the heritage with me.	13 무리 중에 한 사람이 이르되 선생님 내 형을 명하여 유업을 나와 나누게 하소서 하니

14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?	14 But he said, Man, who made me a judge or a maker of decisions for you?	14 이르시되 이 사람아 누가 나를 너희의 재판장이나 물건 나누는 자로 세웠느냐 하시고

15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's ㆍ life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.	15 And he said to them, Take care to keep yourselves free from the desire for property; for a man's life is not made up of the number of things which he has.	15 저희에게 이르시되 삼가 모든 탐심을 물리치라 사람의 생명이 그 소유의 넉넉한데 있지 아니하니라 하시고

16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:	16 And he said to them, in a story, The land of a certain man of great wealth was very fertile:	16 또 비유로 저희에게 일러 가라사대 한 부자가 그 밭에 소출이 풍성하매

17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?	17 And he said to himself, What is to be done? for I have no place in which to put all my fruit.	17 심중에 생각하여 가로되 내가 곡식 쌓아 둘 곳이 없으니 어찌할꼬 하고

18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.	18 And he said, This I will do: I will take down my store-houses and make greater ones, and there I will put all my grain and my goods.	18 또 가로되 내가 이렇게 하리라 내 곡간을 헐고 더 크게 짓고 내 모든 곡식과 물건을 거기 쌓아 두리라

19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.	19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have a great amount of goods in store, enough for a number of years; be at rest, take food and wine and be happy.	19 또 내가 내 영혼에게 이르되 영혼아 여러 해 쓸 물건을 많이 쌓아 두었으니 평안히 쉬고 먹고 마시고 즐거워하자 하리라 하되

20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?	20 But God said to him, You foolish one, tonight I will take your soul from you, and who then will be the owner of all the things which you have got together?	20 하나님은 이르시되 어리석은 자여 오늘 밤에 네 영혼을 도로 찾으리니 그러면 네 예비한 것이 뉘 것이 되겠느냐 하셨으니

21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.	21 So that is what comes to the man who gets wealth for himself, and has not wealth in the eyes of God.	21 자기를 위하여 재물을 쌓아 두고 하나님께 대하여 부요치 못한 자가 이와 같으니라

22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.	22 And he said to his disciples, For this reason I say to you, Take no thought for your life, about what food you will take, or for your body, how it may be clothed.	22 또 제자들에게 이르시되 그러므로 내가 너희에게 이르노니 너희 목숨을 위하여 무엇을 먹을까 몸을 위하여 무엇을 입을까 염려하지 말라

23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.	23 Is not life more than food, and the body than its clothing?	23 목숨이 음식보다 중하고 몸이 의복보다 중하니라

24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?	24 Give thought to the ravens; they do not put seeds into the earth, or get together grain; they have no store-houses or buildings; and God gives them their food: of how much greater value are you than the birds!	24 까마귀를 생각하라 심지도 아니하고 거두지도 아니하며 골방도 없고 창고도 없으되 하나님이 기르시나니 너희는 새보다 얼마나 더 귀하냐

25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?	25 And which of you by taking thought is able to make himself any taller?	25 또 너희 중에 누가 염려함으로 그 키를 한 자나 더할 수 있느냐

26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?	26 If, then, you are not able to do even that which is least, why are you troubled about the rest?	26 그런즉 지극히 작은 것이라도 능치 못하거든 어찌 그 다른 것을 염려하느냐

27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.	27 Give thought to the flowers: they do no work, they make no thread; and still I say to you, Even Solomon, in all his glory, was not clothed like one of these.	27 백합화를 생각하여 보아라 실도 만들지 않고 짜지도 아니하느니라 그러나 내가 너희에게 말하노니 솔로몬의 모든 영광으로도 입은 것이 이 꽃 하나만 같지 못하였느니라

28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?	28 But if God gives such clothing to the grass in the field, which today is living, and tomorrow will be burned in the oven, how much more will he give clothing to you, O men of little faith?	28 오늘 있다가 내일 아궁이에 던지우는 들풀도 하나님이 이렇게 입히시거든 하물며 너희일까보냐 믿음이 적은 자들아

29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink ㆍ, neither be ye of doubtful mind.	29 And do not give overmuch thought to your food and drink, and let not your mind be full of doubts.	29 너희는 무엇을 먹을까 무엇을 마실까 하여 구하지 말며 근심하지도 말라

30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.	30 For the nations of the world go in search of all these things: but your Father has knowledge that you have need of them.	30 이 모든 것은 세상 백성들이 구하는 것이라 너희 아버지께서 이런 것이 너희에게 있어야 될 줄을 아시느니라

31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.	31 But let your chief care be for his kingdom, and these other things will be given to you in addition.	31 오직 너희는 그의 나라를 구하라 그리하면 이런 것을 너희에게 더하시리라

32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.	32 Have no fear, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.	32 적은 무리여 무서워 말라 너희 아버지께서 그 나라를 너희에게 주시기를 기뻐하시느니라

33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.	33 Give what property you have in exchange for money, and give the money to the poor; make for yourselves money-bags which will not get old, wealth stored up in heaven which will be yours for ever, where thieves will not come nor worms put it to destruction.	33 너희 소유를 팔아 구제하여 낡아지지 아니하는 주머니를 만들라 곧 하늘에 둔바 다함이 없는 보물이니 거기는 도적도 가까이 하는 일이 없고 좀도 먹는 일이 없느니라

34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.	34 For where your wealth is, there will your heart be.	34 너희 보물 있는 곳에는 너희 마음도 있으리라

35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;	35 Be ready, dressed as for a journey, with your lights burning.	35 허리에 띠를 띠고 등불을 켜고 서 있으라

36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.	36 And be like men who are looking for their lord, when he comes back from the bride-feast; so that when he comes to the door, it will be open to him quickly.	36 너희는 마치 그 주인이 혼인 집에서 돌아와 문을 두드리면 곧 열어 주려고 기다리는 사람과 같이 되라

37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.	37 Happy are those servants who are watching when the lord comes; truly I say to you, he will make himself their servant and, placing them at the table, he will come out and give them food.	37 주인이 와서 깨어 있는 것을 보면 그 종들은 복이 있으리로다 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 주인이 띠를 띠고 그 종들을 자리에 앉히고 나아와 수종하리라

38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.	38 And if he comes in the second division of the night or in the third, and they are watching for him, happy are those servants.	38 주인이 혹 이경에나 혹 삼경에 이르러서도 종들의 이같이 하는 것을 보면 그 종들은 복이 있으리로다

39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come ㆍ, he would have watched, and ㆍ not have suffered his house to be broken through.	39 But be certain of this, that if the master of the house had had knowledge of the time when the thief was coming, he would have been watching, and would not have let his house be broken into.	39 너희도 아는바니 집 주인이 만일 도적이 어느 때에 이를줄 알았더면 그 집을 뚫지 못하게 하였으리라

40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.	40 So be ready: for the Son of man is coming at a time when you are not looking for him.	40 이러므로 너희도 예비하고 있으라 생각지 않은 때에 인자가 오리라 하시니라

41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?	41 And Peter said to him, Lord, are these words said to us only, or to all men?	41 베드로가 여짜오되 주께서 이 비유를 우리에게 하심이니이까 모든 사람에게 하심이니이까

42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?	42 And the Lord said, Who then is the wise and responsible servant whom his lord will put in control of his family, to give them their food at the right time?	42 주께서 가라사대 지혜 있고 진실한 청지기가 되어 주인에게 그 집 종들을 맡아 때를 따라 양식을 나누어 줄 자가 누구냐

43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.	43 Happy is that servant who, when his lord comes, is doing so.	43 주인이 이를 때에 그 종의 이렇게 하는 것을 보면 그 종이 복이 있으리로다

44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.	44 Truly I say to you, he will put him in control of all his goods.	44 내가 참으로 너희에게 이르노니 주인이 그 모든 소유를 저에게 맡기리라

45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;	45 But if that servant says to himself, My lord is a long time coming; and goes about giving blows to the men-servants and the women-servants, feasting and taking overmuch wine;	45 만일 그 종이 마음에 생각하기를 주인이 더디 오리라 하여 노비를 때리며 먹고 마시고 취하게 되면

46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.	46 The lord of that servant will come at a time when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not ready for him, and he will have him cut in two and will give him his part in the fate of those who have no faith;	46 생각지 않은 날 알지 못하는 시간에 이 종의 주인이 이르러 엄히 때리고 신실치 아니한 자의 받는 율에 처하리니

47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.	47 And the servant who had knowledge of his lord's desires and was not ready for him and did not do as he was ordered, will be given a great number of blows;	47 주인의 뜻을 알고도 예비치 아니하고 그 뜻대로 행치 아니한 종은 많이 맞을 것이요

48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever ㆍ much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.	48 But he who, without knowledge, did things for which punishment is given, will get only a small number of blows. The man to whom much is given, will have to give much; if much is given into his care, of him more will be requested.	48 알지 못하고 맞을 일을 행한 종은 적게 맞으리라 무릇 많이 받은 자에게는 많이 찾을 것이요 많이 맡은 자에게는 많이 달라 할 것이니라

49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?	49 I came to send a fire on the earth, and it may even now have been lighted.	49 내가 불을 땅에 던지러 왔노니 이 불이 이미 붙었으면 내가 무엇을 원하리요

50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!	50 But there is a baptism which I have to undergo; and how am I kept back till it is complete!	50 나는 받을 세례가 있으니 그 이루기까지 나의 답답함이 어떠하겠느냐

51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:	51 Is it your opinion that I have come to give peace on earth? I say to you, No, but division:	51 내가 세상에 화평을 주려고 온줄로 아느냐 내가 너희에게 이르노니 아니라 도리어 분쟁케 하려 함이로라

52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.	52 For from this time, a family of five in one house will be on opposite sides, three against two and two against three.	52 이 후부터 한 집에 다섯 사람이 있어 분쟁하되 셋이 둘과, 둘이 셋과 하리니

53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.	53 They will be at war, the father against his son, and the son against his father; mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.	53 아비가 아들과, 아들이 아비와, 어미가 딸과, 딸이 어미와, 시어미가 며느리와, 며느리가 시어미와 분쟁하리라 하시니라

54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.	54 Then he said to the people, When you see a cloud coming up in the west, straight away you say, There will be rain; and so it is.	54 또 무리에게 이르시되 너희가 구름이 서에서 일어남을 보면 곧 말하기를 소나기가 오리라 하나니 과연 그러하고

55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say ㆍ, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.	55 And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, There will be heat; and so it is.	55 남풍이 붊을 보면 말하기를 심히 더우리라 하나니 과연 그러하니라

56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?	56 O false ones! the face of the earth and the heaven is clear to you; how is it that the signs of these times are not as clear to you?	56 외식하는 자여 너희가 천지의 기상은 분변할 줄을 알면서 어찌 이 시대는 분변치 못하느냐

57 Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?	57 And why are you, in your hearts, unable to be judges of what is right?	57 또 어찌하여 옳은 것을 스스로 판단치 아니하느냐

58 When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.	58 For if anyone has a cause at law against you, and you are going with him before the ruler, make an attempt, on the way, to come to an agreement with him, for if you do not, he may take you before the judge and the judge will give you up to the police, and they will put you in prison.	58 네가 너를 고소할 자와 함께 법관에게 갈 때에 길에서 화해하기를 힘쓰라 저가 너를 재판장에게 끌어가고 재판장이 너를 관속에게 넘겨주어 관속이 옥에 가둘까 염려하라

59 I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence ㆍ, till thou hast paid the very last mite.	59 I say to you, You will not come out of it till you have made payment to the very last farthing.	59 네게 이르노니 호리라도 남김이 없이 갚지 아니하여서는 결단코 저기서 나오지 못하리라 하시니라

KJ English(1611년~)는 셰익스피어의 영어문장처럼 현대 영문법과 약간 다릅니다. 하지만 몇 가지 차이만 알면 오히려 요즘 영어문장보다 더 정확한 내용 이해와 문장의 맛을 느낄 수 있습니다.

상대편(2인칭)에게 말할 때 단수, 복수를 구분합니다. 복수(너희)이면 ye, you, your, yours, yourself를, 단수(너)이면 thou, thee, thy, thine, thyself입니다. 요즘 영어와 달리 "너"와 "너희"가 명확히 구분됩니다!
3인칭 현재동사는 -th나 -eth로 끝나는데 요즘 영어문장에서 -s나 -es와 같습니다.
-st나 -est로 끝나는 동사는 직설법을 말하는 데, 생략하고 읽으면 됩니다.
