3 And they said, O Lord, the God of Israel, why has this fate come on Israel, that today one tribe has been cut off from Israel?

4 Then on the day after, the people got up early and made an altar there, offering burned offerings and peace-offerings.

5 And the children of Israelsaid, Who is there among all the tribes of Israelthatcame not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a greatoath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.[x]MKJV: And the sons of Israel said, Who [is there] among all the tribes of Israel that did not come up with the congregation to the LORD? For they had taken a great oath that whoever did not come up to Mizpah to the Lord was to be put to death. 5 And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel, who did not come up to the Lord at the meeting of all Israel? For they had taken a great oath that whoever did not come up to Mizpah to the Lord was to be put to death.

6 And the children of Israel were moved with pity for Benjamin their brother, saying, Today one tribe has been cut off from Israel.

7 How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?[x]MKJV: What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters for wives? BBE: What are we to do about wives for those who are still living? For we have taken an oath by the Lord that we will not give them our daughters for wives. 7 What are we to do about wives for those who are still living? For we have taken an oath by the Lord that we will not give them our daughters for wives.

8 And they said, What oneis there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there camenone to the camp from Jabeshgileadto the assembly.[x]MKJV: And they said, What one [is there] of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly. BBE: And they said, Which one of the tribes of Israel did not come up to Mizpah to the Lord? 8 And they said, Which one of the tribes of Israel did not come up to Mizpah to the Lord? And it was seen that no one had come from Jabesh-gilead to the meeting.

9 For the people were numbered, and, behold, there werenone of the inhabitants of Jabeshgileadthere.[x]MKJV: For the people were numbered, and behold, none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead [were there.] BBE: For when the people were numbered, not one man of the people of Jabesh-gilead was present. 9 For when the people were numbered, not one man of the people of Jabesh-gilead was present.

10 And the congregationsent thither twelveㆍthousandmen of the valiantestㆍ, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabeshgileadwith the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.[x]MKJV: And the congregation sent there twelve thousand men of the most valiant, and commanded them, saying, Go, and you shall strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the sword, with the women and the sons. BBE: So they (the meeting) sent twelve thousand of the best fighting-men, and gave them orders, saying, Go and put the people of Jabesh-gilead to the sword without mercy, with their women and their little ones. 11 And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.[x]MKJV: And this [is] the thing that you shall do. You shall utterly destroy every male and every woman who has lain with man. BBE: And this is what you are to do: every male, and every woman who has had sex relations with a man, you are to put to the curse, but you are to keep safe the virgins. And they did so. 11 And this is what you are to do: every male, and every woman who has had sex relations with a man, you are to put to the curse, but you are to keep safe the virgins. And they did so.

BBE: And all the meeting sent to the men of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon, offering them peace. 13 And all the meeting sent to the men of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon, offering them peace.

14 And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabeshgileadㆍ: and yet so they sufficed them not.[x]MKJV: And Benjamin came again at that time. And they gave them wives whom they had saved alive, of the women of Jabesh-gilead. And yet so they were not enough for them. BBE: Then Benjamin came back; and they gave them the women whom they had kept from death among the women of Jabesh-gilead: but still there were not enough for them. 14 Then Benjamin came back; and they gave them the women whom they had kept from death among the women of Jabesh-gilead: but still there were not enough for them.

15 And the peoplerepented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.[x]MKJV: And the people repented themselves for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a break in the tribes of Israel. BBE: And the people were moved with pity for Benjamin, because the Lord had let his wrath loose on the tribes of Israel. KAV: 백성이 베냐민으로 인해 뉘우쳤으니 이는 {주}께서 이스라엘 지파들 가운데 한 지파를 깨뜨리셨기 때문이더라. 15 And the people were moved with pity for Benjamin, because the Lord had let his wrath loose on the tribes of Israel.

16 Then the elders of the congregationsaid, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?[x]MKJV: And the elders of the congregation said, What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin? BBE: Then the responsible men of the meeting said, What are we to do about wives for the rest of them, seeing that the women of Benjamin are dead? KAV: ¶ 그때에 회중의 장로들이 이르되, 베냐민에서 여자들이 다 멸절되었은즉 우리가 그 남은 자들을 위하여 어떻게 아내를 얻어 줄까? 하고는
16 Then the responsible men of the meeting said, What are we to do about wives for the rest of them, seeing that the women of Benjamin are dead?
16 회중 장로들이 가로되 베냐민의 여인이 다 멸절되었으니 이제 그 남은 자들에게 어떻게 하여야 아내를 얻게 할꼬
17 And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.[x]MKJV: And they said, [There must be] an inheritance for those of Benjamin who have escaped, so that a tribe may not be destroyed out of Israel. BBE: And they said, How is the rest of Benjamin to be given offspring so that one tribe of Israel may not be put out of existence, KAV: 또 이르되, 베냐민 중에서 도피한 자들에게 반드시 상속 재산이 있어야 하리니 그리하면 이스라엘 중에서 한 지파가 멸절되지 아니하리라. 17 And they said, How is the rest of Benjamin to be given offspring so that one tribe of Israel may not be put out of existence,

18 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursedbe he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.[x]MKJV: However, we may not give them wives of our daughters. For the sons of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed [is] he who gives a wife to Benjamin. BBE: Seeing that we may not give them our daughters as wives? 18 Seeing that we may not give them our daughters as wives? For the children of Israel had taken an oath, saying, Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin.

19 Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shilohyearlyin a place which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east sideof the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.[x]MKJV: Then they said, Behold, [there is] a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah. BBE: And they said, See, every year there is a feast of the Lord in Shiloh, which is to the north of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway which goes up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah. 20 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;[x]MKJV: And they commanded the sons of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards, BBE: And they said to the men of Benjamin, Go into the vine-gardens, waiting there secretly, KAV: 그러므로 베냐민 자손에게 명령하여 이르되, 가서 포도원에서 숨어 기다리며
20 And they said to the men of Benjamin, Go into the vine-gardens, waiting there secretly,

21 And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.[x]MKJV: and see, and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then you come out of the vineyards and catch you a wife for every man from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. BBE: And watching; and if the daughters of Shiloh come out to take part in the dances, then come from the vine-gardens and take a wife for every one of you from among the daughters of Shiloh, and go back to the land of Benjamin. 21 보다가 실로의 여자들이 무도하러 나오거든 너희는 포도원에서 나와서 실로의 딸 중에서 각각 그 아내로 붙들어 가지고 베냐민 땅으로 돌아가라
22 And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethrencome unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.[x]MKJV: And it shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to us to complain, we will say to them, Be favorable to them for our sakes, because we did not reserve each man a wife in the war. For if you did not give to them at this time, you would be guilty. BBE: And when their fathers or their brothers come and make trouble, you are to say to them, Give them to us as an act of grace; for we did not take them as wives for ourselves in war; and if you yourselves had given them to us you would have been responsible for the broken oath. 22 만일 그 아비나 형제가 와서 우리에게 쟁론하면 우리가 그에게 말하기를 청컨대 너희는 우리에게 은혜를 베풀어 그들을 우리에게 줄찌니라 이는 우리가 전쟁할 때에 각 사람을 위하여 그 아내를 얻어 주지 못하였고 너희가 자의로 그들에게 준것이 아니니 너희에게 죄가 없을 것임이니라 하겠노라 하매
23 And the children of Benjamin did so, and tookthemwives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.[x]MKJV: And the sons of Benjamin did so, and took wives according to their number, from those that danced, whom they caught. And they went and returned to their inheritance, and repaired the cities and lived in them. BBE: So the men of Benjamin did this, and got wives for themselves for every one of their number, taking them away by force from the dance; then they went back to their heritage, building up their towns and living in them. 23 So the men of Benjamin did this, and got wives for themselves for every one of their number, taking them away by force from the dance; then they went back to their heritage, building up their towns and living in them.
