1 Now on hearing the news of these things, all the kings on the west side of Jordan, in the hill-country and the lowlands and by the Great Sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites,

4 Acting with deceit, got food together as if for a long journey; and took old food-bags for their asses, and old and cracked wine-skins kept together with cord;

5 And oldshoes and clouted upon their feet, and oldgarments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dryandmouldy.[x]MKJV: and old and patched sandals on their feet, and old clothes on them. And all the bread they had taken was dry [and] moldy. BBE: And put old stitched-up shoes on their feet, and old clothing on their backs; and all the food they had with them was dry and broken up. 5 And put old stitched-up shoes on their feet, and old clothing on their backs; and all the food they had with them was dry and broken up.

6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a farcountry: now therefore make ye a league with us.[x]MKJV: And they went to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, We have come from a far country. Now therefore, make a treaty with us. 6 And they came to Joshua to the tent-circle at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, We have come from a far country: so now make an agreement with us.

7 And the men of Israelsaid unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwellamong us; and how shall we make a league with you?[x]MKJV: And the men of Israel said to the Hivites, Perhaps you are living among us, and how shall we make a treaty with you? BBE: And the men of Israel said to the Hivites, It may be that you are living among us; how then may we make an agreement with you? 9 And they said unto him, From a veryfarcountry thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,[x]MKJV: And they said to him, Your servants have come from a very far country, because of the name of the LORD your God. 10 And all that he did to the twokings of the Amorites, that werebeyondJordan, to Sihonking of Heshbon, and to Ogking of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.[x]MKJV: and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites who [were] beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth. 10 And what he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of Jordan, to Sihon, king of Heshbon, and to Og, king of Bashan, at Ashtaroth.
10 또 그가 요단 동편에 있는 아모리 사람의 두 왕 곧 헤스본 왕 시혼과 아스다롯에 있는 바산 왕 옥에게 행하신 모든 일을 들었음이니이다
11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our countryspake to us, saying, Takevictuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.[x]MKJV: And our elders and all those who live in our country spoke to us saying, Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them. Say to them, We [are] your servants. And now make a treaty with us. BBE: So the responsible men and all the people of our country said to us, Take food with you for the journey and go to them, and say to them, We are your servants: so now make an agreement with us. 11 So the responsible men and all the people of our country said to us, Take food with you for the journey and go to them, and say to them, We are your servants: so now make an agreement with us.
11 그러므로 우리 장로들과 우리 나라의 모든 거민이 우리에게 일러 가로되 너희는 여행할 양식을 손에 가지고 가서 그들을 맞아서 그들에게 이르기를 우리는 당신들의 종이니 청컨대 이제 우리와 약조하사이다 하라 하였나이다
12 This our bread we took hotfor our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:[x]MKJV: We took this bread hot [for] our provision out of our houses on the day we came out to go to you. But now, see, [it is] dry, and it is moldy. BBE: This bread which we have with us for our food, we took warm and new from our houses when starting on our journey to you; but now see, it has become dry and broken up. KAV: 우리의 이 빵은 우리가 당신들에게로 오려고 떠나던 날에 우리의 집에서 뜨거운 것을 양식으로 취한 것인데, 보소서, 이제 그것이 마르고 곰팡이가 났으며 TSK: our bread: jos 9:4,5
12 This bread which we have with us for our food, we took warm and new from our houses when starting on our journey to you; but now see, it has become dry and broken up.

13 And these bottles of wine, which we filled, werenew; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the verylongjourney.[x]MKJV: And these wineskins which we filled [were] new. And, see, they are torn. And these clothes and shoes of ours have become old because of the very long journey. BBE: And these wine-skins were new when we put the wine in them, and now they are cracked as you see; and our clothing and our shoes have become old because of our very long journey here. KAV: 또 우리가 포도즙을 담은 이 부대들도 새 것이었는데, 보소서, 그것들이 찢어졌으며 우리의 이 옷과 신도 매우 먼 여행으로 인해 낡아졌나이다, 하니라.
13 And these wine-skins were new when we put the wine in them, and now they are cracked as you see; and our clothing and our shoes have become old because of our very long journey here.
13 또 우리가 포도주를 담은 이 가죽 부대도 새것이더니 찢어지게 되었으며 우리의 이 옷과 신도 여행이 심히 길므로 인하여 낡아졌나이다 한지라
14 And the men took some of their food, without requesting directions from the Lord.
14 무리가 그들의 양식을 취하고 어떻게 할것을 여호와께 묻지 아니하고
15 And Joshuamadepeace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregationsware unto them.[x]MKJV: And Joshua made peace with them, and made a treaty with them, to let them live. And the rulers of the congregation swore to them. BBE: So Joshua made peace with them, and made an agreement with them that they were not to be put to death: and the chiefs of the people took an oath to them. 15 So Joshua made peace with them, and made an agreement with them that they were not to be put to death: and the chiefs of the people took an oath to them.

16 And it came to pass at the end of threedaysafter they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dweltamong them.[x]MKJV: And it happened at the end of three days after they had made a treaty with them, they heard that they [were] their neighbors and that they lived among them. BBE: Now three days after, when they had made this agreement with them, they had word that these men were their neighbours, living near them. 16 Now three days after, when they had made this agreement with them, they had word that these men were their neighbours, living near them.

17 And the children of Israeljourneyed, and came unto their cities on the thirdday. Now their citieswereGibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.[x]MKJV: And the sons of Israel journeyed and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities [were] Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim. BBE: And the children of Israel went forward on their journey, and on the third day came to their towns. 17 이스라엘 자손이 진행하여 제 삼일에 그들의 여러 성읍에 이르렀으니 그 성읍은 기브온과 그비라와 브에롯과 기럇여아림이라
18 And the children of Israelsmote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORDGod of Israel. And all the congregationmurmured against the princes.[x]MKJV: And the sons of Israel did not strike them, because the rulers of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the rulers. BBE: And the children of Israel did not put them to death, because the chiefs of the people had taken an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. 18 And the children of Israel did not put them to death, because the chiefs of the people had taken an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. And all the people made an outcry against the chiefs.
18 그러나 회중 족장들이 이스라엘 하나님 여호와로 그들에게 맹세한고로 이스라엘 자손이 그들을 치지 못한지라 그러므로 회중이 다 족장들을 원망하니
19 But all the princessaid unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORDGod of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.[x]MKJV: But all the rulers said to the congregation, We have sworn to them by the LORD God of Israel. Now, therefore, we may not touch them. BBE: But all the chiefs said to the people, We have taken an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel, and so we may not put our hands on them. 19 But all the chiefs said to the people, We have taken an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel, and so we may not put our hands on them.

20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.[x]MKJV: This we will do to them. We will even let them live, lest wrath be on us because of the oath which we swore to them. BBE: This is what we will do to them: we will not put them to death, for fear that wrath may come on us because of our oath to them. 20 This is what we will do to them: we will not put them to death, for fear that wrath may come on us because of our oath to them.

21 And the princessaid unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.[x]MKJV: And the rulers said to them, Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and drawers of water to all the congregation, as the rulers had promised them. BBE: Keep them living, and let them be servants, cutting wood and getting water for all the people. And all the people did as the chiefs had said to them. 21 Keep them living, and let them be servants, cutting wood and getting water for all the people. And all the people did as the chiefs had said to them.
21 무리에게 이르되 그들을 살리라 하니 족장들이 그들에게 이른대로 그들이 온 회중을 위하여 나무 패며 물 긷는 자가 되었더라
22 And Joshuacalled for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We areveryfar from you; when ye dwellamong us?[x]MKJV: And Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, Why have you fooled us saying, We [are] very far from you, when you dwell among us? BBE: Then Joshua sent for them, and said to them, Why have you been false to us, saying, We are very far from you, when you are living among us? KAV: ¶ 여호수아가 그들을 불러 그들에게 말하여 이르되, 너희가 우리 가운데 거하거늘 어찌 너희가 말하기를, 우리는 당신들에게서 매우 멀리 있나이다, 하여 우리를 속였느냐? TSK: Wherefore: ge 3:13,14, ge 27:35,36,41-45, ge 29:25, 2co 11:3; We are: jos 9:6,9,10
22 Then Joshua sent for them, and said to them, Why have you been false to us, saying, We are very far from you, when you are living among us?

23 Now therefore ye arecursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.[x]MKJV: And now you [are] cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being slaves and woodcutters and drawers of water for the house of my God. BBE: Now because of this you are cursed, and you will for ever be our servants, cutting wood and getting water for the house of my God. 23 Now because of this you are cursed, and you will for ever be our servants, cutting wood and getting water for the house of my God.

24 And they answeredJoshua, and said, Because it was certainlytold thy servants, how that the LORD thy Godcommanded his servantMoses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were soreafraid of our livesbecause of you, and have done this thing.[x]MKJV: And they answered Joshua and said, Because it was certainly told your servants how the LORD your God commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all those who lived in the land from before you; therefore, we were very much afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing. BBE: And, answering Joshua, they said, Because it came to the ears of your servants that the Lord your God had given orders to his servant Moses to give you all this land, and to send destruction on all the people living in it, because of you; so, fearing greatly for our lives because of you, we have done this. KAV: 그들이 여호수아에게 응답하여 이르되, {주} 당신의 [하나님]께서 자신의 종 모세에게 명령하사 이 온 땅을 당신들에게 주시고 그 땅의 모든 거주민을 당신들 앞에서 멸하게 하신 것을 당신의 종들이 분명히 들었으므로 그런 까닭에 우리가 당신들로 인해 우리의 생명을 잃을까 심히 두려워하여 이 일을 행하였나이다. 24 And, answering Joshua, they said, Because it came to the ears of your servants that the Lord your God had given orders to his servant Moses to give you all this land, and to send destruction on all the people living in it, because of you; so, fearing greatly for our lives because of you, we have done this.
24 그들이 여호수아에게 대답하여 가로되 당신의 하나님 여호와께서 그 종 모세에게 명하사 이 땅을 다 당신들에게 주고 이 땅 모든 거민을 당신들의 앞에서 멸하라 하신것이 당신의 종에게 분명히 들리므로 당신들을 인하여 우리 생명을 잃을까 심히 두려워하여 이 같이 하였나이다

27 And that day Joshua made them servants, cutting wood and getting water for the people and for the altar of the Lord, in the place marked out by him, to this day.
27 그 날에 여호수아가 그들로 여호와의 택하신 곳에서 회중을 위하며 여호와의 단을 위하여 나무 패며 물 긷는 자를 삼았더니 오늘까지 이르니라
