Jonah repines at God's mercy to Nineveh, and is reproved. (1-4) He is taught by the withering of a gourd, that he did wrong. (5-11)

1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly ㆍ, and he was very angry.1 But this seemed very wrong to Jonah, and he was angry.1 요나가 심히 싫어하고 노하여
2 And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.2 And he made prayer to the Lord and said, O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still in my country? This is why I took care to go in flight to Tarshish: for I was certain that you were a loving God, full of pity, slow to be angry and great in mercy, and ready to be turned from your purpose of evil.2 여호와께 기도하여 가로되 여호와여 내가 고국에 있을 때에 이러하겠다고 말씀하지 아니하였나이까 그러므로 내가 빨리 다시스로 도망하였사오니 주께서는 은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디하시며 인애가 크시사 뜻을 돌이켜 재앙을 내리지 아니하시는 하나님이신 줄을 내가 알았음이니이다
3 Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.3 So now, O Lord, give ear to my prayer and take my life from me; for death is better for me than life.3 여호와여 원컨대 이제 내 생명을 취하소서 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 내게 나음이니이다
4 Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?4 And the Lord said, Have you any right to be angry?4 여호와께서 이르시되 너의 성냄이 어찌 합당하냐 하시니라
5 So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.5 Then Jonah went out of the town, and took his seat on the east side of the town and made himself a roof of branches and took his seat under its shade till he saw what would become of the town.5 요나가 성에서 나가서 그 성 동편에 앉되 거기서 자기를 위하여 초막을 짓고 그 그늘 아래 앉아서 성읍이 어떻게 되는 것을 보려 하니라
6 And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding ㆍ glad of the gourd.6 And the Lord God made a vine come up over Jonah to give him shade over his head. And Jonah was very glad because of the vine.6 하나님 여호와께서 박 넝쿨을 준비하사 요나 위에 가리우게 하셨으니 이는 그 머리를 위하여 그늘이 지게 하며 그 괴로움을 면케 하려 하심이었더라 요나가 박 넝쿨을 인하여 심히 기뻐하였더니
7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.7 But early on the morning after, God made ready a worm for the destruction of the vine, and it became dry and dead.7 하나님이 벌레를 준비하사 이튿날 새벽에 그 박 넝쿨을 씹게 하시매 곧 시드니라
8 And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.8 Then when the sun came up, God sent a burning east wind: and so great was the heat of the sun on his head that Jonah was overcome, and, requesting death for himself, said, Death is better for me than life.8 해가 뜰 때에 하나님이 뜨거운 동풍을 준비하셨고 해는 요나의 머리에 쬐매 요나가 혼곤하여 스스로 죽기를 구하여 가로되 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 내게 나으니이다
9 And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.9 And the Lord said to Jonah, Have you any right to be angry about the vine? And he said, I have a right to be truly angry.9 하나님이 요나에게 이르시되 네가 이 박 넝쿨로 인하여 성냄이 어찌 합당하냐 그가 대답하되 내가 성내어 죽기까지 할찌라도 합당하니이다
10 Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night ㆍ, and perished in a night:10 And the Lord said, You had pity on the vine, for which you did no work and for the growth of which you were not responsible; which came up in a night and came to an end in a night;10 여호와께서 가라사대 네가 수고도 아니하였고 배양도 아니하였고 하룻밤에 났다가 하룻밤에 망한 이 박 넝쿨을 네가 아꼈거든
11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore ㆍ thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?11 And am I not to have mercy on Nineveh, that great town, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons without the power of judging between right and left, as well as much cattle?11 하물며 이 큰 성읍, 니느웨에는 좌우를 분변치 못하는 자가 십 이만 여명이요 육축도 많이 있나니 내가 아끼는 것이 어찌 합당치 아니하냐
