6 As soon then as he had said unto them ㆍ, I am he, they went backward ㆍ, and fell to the ground.	6 And when he said to them, I am he, they went back, falling to the earth.	6 예수께서 저희에게 내로라 하실 때에 저희가 물러가서 땅에 엎드러지는지라

7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.	7 So again he put the question to them, Who are you looking for? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.	7 이에 다시 누구를 찾느냐고 물으신대 저희가 말하되 나사렛 예수라 하거늘

8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:	8 Jesus made answer, I have said that I am he; if you are looking for me, let these men go away.	8 예수께서 대답하시되 너희에게 내로라 하였으니 나를 찾거든 이 사람들의 가는 것을 용납하라 하시니

9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake ㆍ, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.	9 (He said this so that his words might come true, I have kept safe all those whom you gave to me.)	9 이는 아버지께서 내게 주신 자 중에서 하나도 잃지 아니하였삽나이다 하신 말씀을 응하게 하려 함이러라

10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear ㆍ. The servant's name was Malchus.	10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, took it out and gave the high priest's servant a blow, cutting off his right ear. 11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?	11 Then Jesus said to Peter, Put back your sword: am I not to take the cup which my Father has given to me?	11 예수께서 베드로더러 이르시되 검을 집에 꽂으라 아버지께서 주신 잔을 내가 마시지 아니하겠느냐 하시니라

13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.	13 They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was the high priest that year.	13 먼저 안나스에게로 끌고 가니 안나스는 그 해의 대제사장인 가야바의 장인이라

14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.	14 It was Caiaphas who had said to the Jews that it was in their interest for one man to be put to death for the people.	14 가야바는 유대인들에게 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽는 것이 유익하다 권고하던 자러라

15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple ㆍ: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.	15 And Simon Peter went after Jesus with another disciple. Now that disciple was a friend of the high priest and he went in with Jesus into the house of the high priest;	15 시몬 베드로와 또 다른 제자 하나가 예수를 따르니 이 제자는 대제사장과 아는 사람이라 예수와 함께 대제사장의 집 뜰에 들어가고

16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.	16 But Peter was kept outside at the door. Then this other disciple, who was a friend of the high priest, came out and had a word with the girl who kept the door, and took Peter in.	16 베드로는 문 밖에 섰는지라 대제사장과 아는 그 다른 제자가 나가서 문 지키는 여자에게 말하여 베드로를 데리고 들어왔더니

17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.	17 Then the girl who was the door-keeper said to Peter, Are you not one of this man's disciples? In answer he said, I am not.	17 문 지키는 여종이 베드로에게 말하되 너도 이 사람의 제자 중 하나가 아니냐 하니 그가 말하되 나는 아니라 하고

18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood ㆍ with them, and warmed himself.	18 Now the servants and the police had made a fire of coals because it was cold; they were warming themselves in front of it and Peter was there with them, warming himself.	18 그 때가 추운고로 종과 하속들이 숯불을 피우고 서서 쬐니 베드로도 함께 서서 쬐더라

19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.	19 Then the high priest put questions to Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.	19 대제사장이 예수에게 그의 제자들과 그의 교훈에 대하여 물으니

20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.	20 Jesus made answer, I said things openly to the world at all times; I have given my teaching in the Synagogues and in the Temple to which all the Jews come; and I have said nothing secretly.	20 예수께서 대답하시되 내가 드러내어 놓고 세상에 말하였노라 모든 유대인들의 모이는 회당과 성전에서 항상 가르쳤고 은밀히는 아무 것도 말하지 아니하였거늘

21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.	21 Why are you questioning me? put questions to my hearers about what I have said to them: they have knowledge of what I said.	21 어찌하여 내게 묻느냐 내가 무슨 말을 하였는지 들은 자들에게 물어 보라 저희가 나의 하던 말을 아느니라

22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck ㆍ Jesus with the palm of his hand ㆍ, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?	22 When he said this, one of the police by his side gave him a blow with his open hand, saying, Do you give such an answer to the high priest?	22 이 말씀을 하시매 곁에 섰는 하속 하나가 손으로 예수를 쳐 가로되 네가 대제사장에게 이 같이 대답하느냐 하니

23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?	23 Jesus said in answer, If I have said anything evil, give witness to the evil: but if I said what is true, why do you give me blows?	23 예수께서 대답하시되 내가 말을 잘못하였으면 그 잘못한 것을 증거하라 잘하였으면 네가 어찌하여 나를 치느냐 하시더라

24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.	24 Then Annas sent him chained to Caiaphas, the high priest.	24 안나스가 예수를 결박한 그대로 대제사장 가야바에게 보내니라

25 And Simon Peter stood ㆍ and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.	25 But Simon Peter was still there warming himself by the fire. They said to him, Are you not one of his disciples? He said, No, I am not.	25 시몬 베드로가 서서 불을 쬐더니 사람들이 묻되 너도 그 제자 중 하나가 아니냐 베드로가 부인하여 가로되 나는 아니라 하니

26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?	26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relation of him whose ear had been cut off by Peter, said, Did I not see you with him in the garden?	26 대제사장의 종 하나는 베드로에게 귀를 베어 버리운 사람의 일가라 가로되 네가 그 사람과 함께 동산에 있던 것을 내가 보지 아니하였느냐

27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.	27 Then again Peter said, No. And straight away a cock gave its cry.	27 이에 베드로가 또 부인하니 곧 닭이 울더라

28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.	28 So they took Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not go into the Praetorium, so that they might not become unclean, but might take the Passover.	28 저희가 예수를 가야바에게서 관정으로 끌고 가니 새벽이라 저희는 더럽힘을 받지 아니하고 유월절 잔치를 먹고자 하여 관정에 들어가지 아니하더라

29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?	29 So Pilate came out to them and put the question: What have you to say against this man?	29 그러므로 빌라도가 밖으로 저희에게 나가서 말하되 너희가 무슨 일로 이 사람을 고소하느냐

30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.	30 They said to him in answer, If the man was not a wrongdoer we would not have given him up to you.	30 대답하여 가로되 이 사람이 행악자가 아니었더면 우리가 당신에게 넘기지 아니하였겠나이다

31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:	31 Then Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and let him be judged by your law. But the Jews said to him, We have no right to put any man to death.	31 빌라도가 가로되 너희가 저를 데려다가 너희 법대로 재판하라 유대인들이 가로되 우리에게는 사람을 죽이는 권이 없나이다 하니

32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.	32 (That the word of Jesus might come true, pointing to the sort of death he would have.)	32 이는 예수께서 자기가 어떠한 죽음으로 죽을 것을 가리켜 하신 말씀을 응하게 하려 함이러라

33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?	33 Then Pilate went back into the Praetorium and sent for Jesus and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews?	33 이에 빌라도가 다시 관정에 들어가 예수를 불러 가로되 네가 유대인의 왕이냐

34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?	34 Jesus made answer, Do you say this of yourself, or did others say it about me?	34 예수께서 대답하시되 이는 네가 스스로 하는 말이뇨 다른 사람들이 나를 대하여 네게 한 말이뇨

35 Pilate answered ㆍ, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?	35 Pilate said, Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests have given you into my hands: what have you done?	35 빌라도가 대답하되 내가 유대인이냐 네 나라 사람과 대제사장들이 너를 내게 넘겼으니 네가 무엇을 하였느냐

36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.	36 Jesus said in answer, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom was of this world, my disciples would have made a good fight to keep me out of the hands of the Jews: but my kingdom is not here.	36 예수께서 대답하시되 내 나라는 이 세상에 속한 것이 아니라 만일 내 나라가 이 세상에 속한 것이었더면 내 종들이 싸워 나로 유대인들에게 넘기우지 않게 하였으리라 이제 내 나라는 여기에 속한 것이 아니니라

37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.	37 Then Pilate said to him, Are you then a king? Jesus made answer, You say that I am a king. For this purpose was I given birth, and for this purpose I came into the world, that I might give witness to what is true. Every lover of what is true gives ear to my voice.	37 빌라도가 가로되 그러면 네가 왕이 아니냐 예수께서 대답하시되 네 말과 같이 내가 왕이니라 내가 이를 위하여 났으며 이를 위하여 세상에 왔나니 곧 진리에 대하여 증거하려 함이로라 무릇 진리에 속한 자는 내 소리를 듣느니라 하신대

38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.	38 Pilate said to him, True? what is true? Having said this he went out again to the Jews and said to them, I see no wrong in him.	38 빌라도가 가로되 진리가 무엇이냐 하더라 이 말을 하고 다시 유대인들에게 나가서 이르되 나는 그에게서 아무 죄도 찾지 못하노라

39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?	39 But every year you make a request to me to let a prisoner go free at the Passover. Is it your desire that I let the King of the Jews go free?	39 유월절이면 내가 너희에게 한 사람을 놓아 주는 전례가 있으니 그러면 너희는 내가 유대인의 왕을 너희에게 놓아 주기를 원하느냐 하니

40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.	40 Then again they gave a loud cry, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was an outlaw.	40 저희가 또 소리질러 가로되 이 사람이 아니라 바라바라 하니 바라바는 강도러라

King James English

KJ English(1611년~)는 셰익스피어의 영어문장처럼 현대 영문법과 약간 다릅니다. 하지만 몇 가지 차이만 알면 오히려 요즘 영어문장보다 더 정확한 내용 이해와 문장의 맛을 느낄 수 있습니다.

상대편(2인칭)에게 말할 때 단수, 복수를 구분합니다. 복수(너희)이면 ye, you, your, yours, yourself를, 단수(너)이면 thou, thee, thy, thine, thyself입니다. 요즘 영어와 달리 "너"와 "너희"가 명확히 구분됩니다!
3인칭 현재동사는 -th나 -eth로 끝나는데 요즘 영어문장에서 -s나 -es와 같습니다.
-st나 -est로 끝나는 동사는 직설법을 말하는 데, 생략하고 읽으면 됩니다.
