9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.	9 예수께서 대답하시되 낮이 열 두시가 아니냐 사람이 낮에 다니면 이 세상의 빛을 보므로 실족하지 아니하고

10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.	10 But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.	10 밤에 다니면 빛이 그 사람 안에 없는고로 실족하느니라

11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.	11 These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep.	11 이 말씀을 하신 후에 또 가라사대 우리 친구 나사로가 잠들었도다 그러나 내가 깨우러 가노라

12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.	12 Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well.	12 제자들이 가로되 주여 잠들었으면 낫겠나이다 하더라

13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.	13 Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep.	13 예수는 그의 죽음을 가리켜 말씀하신 것이나 저희는 잠들어 쉬는 것을 가리켜 말씀하심인줄 생각하는지라

14 Then ㆍ said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.	14 Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.	14 이에 예수께서 밝히 이르시되 나사로가 죽었느니라

15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.	15 And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.	15 내가 거기 있지 아니한 것을 너희를 위하여 기뻐하노니 이는 너희로 믿게 하려함이라 그러나 그에게로 가자 하신대

16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.	16 Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.	16 디두모라 하는 도마가 다른 제자들에게 말하되 우리도 주와 함께 죽으러 가자 하니라

17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.	17 Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before.	17 예수께서 와서 보시니 나사로가 무덤에 있은지 이미 나흘이라

18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:	18 Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away;	18 베다니는 예루살렘에서 가깝기가 한 오리쯤 되매

19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary ㆍ, to comfort them concerning their brother.	19 And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother.	19 많은 유대인이 마르다와 마리아에게 그 오라비의 일로 위문하러 왔더니

20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.	20 When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house.	20 마르다는 예수 오신다는 말을 듣고 곧 나가 맞되 마리아는 집에 앉았더라

21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother ㆍ had not died.	21 Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.	21 마르다가 예수께 여짜오되 주께서 여기 계셨더면 내 오라비가 죽지 아니하였겠나이다

22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever ㆍ thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.	22 But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.	22 그러나 나는 이제라도 주께서 무엇이든지 하나님께 구하시는 것을 하나님이 주실 줄을 아나이다

23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.	23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.	23 예수께서 가라사대 네 오라비가 다시 살리라

24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.	24 Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.	24 마르다가 가로되 마지막 날 부활에는 다시 살 줄을 내가 아나이다

25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:	25 Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;	25 예수께서 가라사대 나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고

26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never ㆍ ㆍ die. Believest thou this?	26 And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?	26 무릇 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리니 이것을 네가 믿느냐

27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.	27 She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.	27 가로되 주여 그러하외다 주는 그리스도시요 세상에 오시는 하나님의 아들이신줄 내가 믿나이다

28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.	28 And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.	28 이 말을 하고 돌아가서 가만히 그 형제 마리아를 불러 말하되 선생님이 오셔서 너를 부르신다 하니

29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.	29 And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him.	29 마리아가 이 말을 듣고 급히 일어나 예수께 나아가매

30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.	30 Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.	30 예수는 아직 마을로 들어오지 아니하시고 마르다의 맞던 곳에 그저 계시더라

31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying ㆍ, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.	31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there.	31 마리아와 함께 집에 있어 위로하던 유대인들은 그의 급히 일어나 나가는 것을 보고 곡하러 무덤에 가는 줄로 생각하고 따라가더니

32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.	32 When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.	32 마리아가 예수 계신 곳에 와서 보이고 그 발 앞에 엎드리어 가로되 주께서 여기 계셨더면 내 오라비가 죽지 아니하였겠나이다 하더라

33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,	33 And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,	33 예수께서 그의 우는 것과 또 함께 온 유대인들의 우는 것을 보시고 심령에 통분히 여기시고 민망히 여기사

34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.	34 And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.	34 가라사대 그를 어디 두었느냐 가로되 주여 와서 보옵소서 하니

35 Jesus wept.	35 And Jesus himself was weeping.	35 예수께서 눈물을 흘리시더라

36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!	36 So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!	36 이에 유대인들이 말하되 보라 그를 어떻게 사랑하였는가 하며

37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?	37 But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death?	37 그중 어떤 이는 말하되 소경의 눈을 뜨게 한 이 사람이 그 사람은 죽지 않게 할 수 없었더냐 하더라

38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave ㆍ. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.	38 So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.	38 이에 예수께서 다시 속으로 통분히 여기시며 무덤에 가시니 무덤이 굴이라 돌로 막았거늘

39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.	39 Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.	39 예수께서 가라사대 돌을 옮겨 놓으라 하시니 그 죽은 자의 누이 마르다가 가로되 주여 죽은지가 나흘이 되었으매 벌써 냄새가 나나이다

40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?	40 Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?	40 예수께서 가라사대 내 말이 네가 믿으면 하나님의 영광을 보리라 하지 아니하였느냐 하신대

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.	41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.	41 돌을 옮겨 놓으니 예수께서 눈을 들어 우러러 보시고 가라사대 아버지여 내 말을 들으신 것을 감사하나이다

42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.	42 I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.	42 항상 내 말을 들으시는 줄을 내가 알았나이다 그러나 이 말씀 하옵는 것은 둘러선 무리를 위함이니 곧 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 저희로 믿게 하려 함이니이다

43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.	43 Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!	43 이 말씀을 하시고 큰 소리로 나사로야 나오라 부르시니

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.	44 And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.	44 죽은 자가 수족을 베로 동인채로 나오는데 그 얼굴은 수건에 싸였더라 예수께서 가라사대 풀어 놓아 다니게 하라 하시니라

45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.	45 Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him.	45 마리아에게 와서 예수의 하신 일을 본 많은 유대인이 저를 믿었으나

46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.	46 But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done.	46 그 중에 어떤 자는 바리새인들에게 가서 예수의 하신 일을 고하니라

47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.	47 Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs.	47 이에 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 공회를 모으고 가로되 이 사람이 많은 표적을 행하니 우리가 어떻게 하겠느냐

48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.	48 If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.	48 만일 저를 이대로 두면 모든 사람이 저를 믿을 것이요 그리고 로마인들이 와서 우리 땅과 민족을 빼앗아 가리라 하니

49 And one ㆍ of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,	49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything;	49 그 중에 한 사람 그 해 대제사장인 가야바가 저희에게 말하되 너희가 아무 것도 알지 못하는도다

50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.	50 You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction.	50 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽어서 온 민족이 망하지 않게 되는 것이 너희에게 유익한 줄을 생각지 아니하는도다 하였으니

51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;	51 He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation;	51 이 말은 스스로 함이 아니요 그 해에 대제사장이므로 예수께서 그 민족을 위하시고

52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.	52 And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world.	52 또 그 민족만 위할뿐 아니라 흩어진 하나님의 자녀를 모아 하나가 되게 하기 위하여 죽으실 것을 미리 말함이러라

53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.	53 And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death.	53 이 날부터는 저희가 예수를 죽이려고 모의하니라

54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.	54 So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.	54 그러므로 예수께서 다시 유대인 가운데 드러나게 다니지 아니하시고 여기를 떠나 빈 들 가까운 곳인 에브라임이라는 동네에 가서 제자들과 함께 거기 유하시니라

55 And the Jews passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.	55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover.	55 유대인의 유월절이 가까우매 많은 사람이 자기를 성결케 하기 위하여 유월절 전에 시골서 예루살렘으로 올라갔더니

56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?	56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast?	56 저희가 예수를 찾으며 성전에 서서 서로 말하되 너희 생각에는 어떠하뇨 저가 명절에 오지 아니하겠느냐 하니

57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should show it, that they might take him.	57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him.	57 이는 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 누구든지 예수 있는 곳을 알거든 고하여 잡게 하라 명령하였음이러라

King James English

KJ English(1611년~)는 셰익스피어의 영어문장처럼 현대 영문법과 약간 다릅니다. 하지만 몇 가지 차이만 알면 오히려 요즘 영어문장보다 더 정확한 내용 이해와 문장의 맛을 느낄 수 있습니다.

상대편(2인칭)에게 말할 때 단수, 복수를 구분합니다. 복수(너희)이면 ye, you, your, yours, yourself를, 단수(너)이면 thou, thee, thy, thine, thyself입니다. 요즘 영어와 달리 "너"와 "너희"가 명확히 구분됩니다!
3인칭 현재동사는 -th나 -eth로 끝나는데 요즘 영어문장에서 -s나 -es와 같습니다.
-st나 -est로 끝나는 동사는 직설법을 말하는 데, 생략하고 읽으면 됩니다.
