1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.1 Now Jacob was living in the land where his father had made a place for himself, in the land of Canaan.1 야곱이 가나안 땅 곧 그 아비의 우거하던 땅에 거하였으니
2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen ㆍ years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.2 These are the generations of Jacob: Joseph, a boy seventeen years old, was looking after the flock, together with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives; and Joseph gave their father a bad account of them.2 야곱의 약전이 이러하니라 요셉이 십 칠세의 소년으로서 그 형제와 함께 양을 칠 때에 그 아비의 첩 빌하와 실바의 아들들로 더불어 함께하였더니 그가 그들의 과실을 아비에게 고하더라
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.3 Now the love which Israel had for Joseph was greater than his love for all his other children, because he got him when he was an old man: and he had a long coat made for him.3 요셉은 노년에 얻은 아들이므로 이스라엘이 여러 아들보다 그를 깊이 사랑하여 위하여 채색옷을 지었더니
4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.4 And because his brothers saw that Joseph was dearer to his father than all the others, they were full of hate for him, and would not say a kind word to him.4 그 형들이 아비가 형제들보다 그를 사랑함을 보고 그를 미워하여 그에게 언사가 불평하였더라
5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he gave his brothers an account of it, which made their hate greater than ever.5 요셉이 꿈을 꾸고 자기 형들에게 고하매 그들이 그를 더욱 미워하였더라
6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:6 And he said to them, Let me give you the story of my dream.6 요셉이 그들에게 이르되 청컨대 나의 꾼 꿈을 들으시오
7 For, behold, we were binding ㆍ sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.7 We were in the field, getting the grain stems together, and my grain kept upright, and yours came round and went down on the earth before mine.7 우리가 밭에서 곡식을 묶더니 내 단은 일어서고 당신들의 단은 내 단을 둘러서서 절하더이다
8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.8 And his brothers said to him, Are you to be our king? will you have authority over us? And because of his dream and his words, their hate for him became greater than ever.8 그 형들이 그에게 이르되 네가 참으로 우리의 왕이 되겠느냐 참으로 우리를 다스리게 되겠느냐 하고 그 꿈과 그 말을 인하여 그를 더욱 미워하더니
9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven ㆍ stars made obeisance to me.9 Then he had another dream, and gave his brothers an account of it, saying, I have had another dream: the sun and the moon and eleven stars gave honour to me.9 요셉이 다시 꿈을 꾸고 그 형들에게 고하여 가로되 내가 또 꿈을 꾼즉 해와 달과 열 한 별이 내게 절하더이다 하니라
10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?10 And he gave word of it to his father and his brothers; but his father protesting said, What sort of a dream is this? am I and your mother and your brothers to go down on our faces to the earth before you?10 그가 그 꿈으로 부형에게 고하매 아비가 그를 꾸짖고 그에게 이르되 너의 꾼 꿈이 무엇이냐 나와 네 모와 네 형제들이 참으로 가서 땅에 엎드려 네게 절하겠느냐
11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.11 And his brothers were full of envy; but his father kept his words in mind.11 그 형들은 시기하되 그 아비는 그 말을 마음에 두었더라
12 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.12 Now his brothers went to keep watch over their father's flock in Shechem.12 그 형들이 세겜에 가서 아비의 양떼를 칠 때에
13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.13 And Israel said to Joseph, Are not your brothers with the flock in Shechem? come, I will send you to them. And he said to him, Here am I.13 이스라엘이 요셉에게 이르되 네 형들이 세겜에서 양을 치지 아니하느냐 너를 그들에게로 보내리라 요셉이 아비에게 대답하되 내가 그리하겠나이다
14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.14 And he said to him, Go now, and see if your brothers are well and how the flock is; then come back and give me word. So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.14 이스라엘이 그에게 이르되 가서 네 형들과 양떼가 다 잘 있는 여부를 보고 돌아와 내게 고하라 하고 그를 헤브론 골짜기에서 보내매 이에 세겜으로 가니라
15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?15 And a man saw him wandering in the country, and said to him, What are you looking for?15 어떤 사람이 그를 만난즉 그가 들에서 방황하는지라 그 사람이 그에게 물어 가로되 네가 무엇을 찾느냐
16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.16 And he said, I am looking for my brothers; please give me word of where they are keeping their flock.16 그가 가로되 내가 나의 형들을 찾으오니 청컨대 그들의 양 치는 곳을 내게 가르치소서
17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.17 And the man said, They have gone away from here, for they said in my hearing, Let us go to Dothan. So Joseph went after them and came up with them at Dothan.17 그 사람이 가로되 그들이 여기서 떠났느니라 내가 그들의 말을 들으니 도단으로 가자 하더라 요셉이 그 형들의 뒤를 따라 가서 도단에서 그들을 만나니라
18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.18 But they saw him when he was a long way off, and before he came near them they made a secret design against him to put him to death;18 요셉이 그들에게 가까이 오기 전에 그들이 요셉을 멀리서 보고 죽이기를 꾀하여
19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer ㆍ cometh.19 Saying to one another, See, here comes this dreamer.19 서로 이르되 꿈 꾸는 자가 오는도다
20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.20 Let us now put him to death and put his body into one of these holes, and we will say, An evil beast has put him to death: then we will see what becomes of his dreams.20 자, 그를 죽여 한 구덩이에 던지고 우리가 말하기를 악한 짐승이 그를 잡아먹었다 하자 그 꿈이 어떻게 되는 것을 우리가 볼 것이니라 하는지라
21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill ㆍ him.21 But Reuben, hearing these words, got him out of their hands, saying, Let us not take his life.21 르우벤이 듣고 요셉을 그들의 손에서 구원하려하여 가로되 우리가 그 생명은 상하지 말자
22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.22 Do not put him to a violent death, but let him be placed in one of the holes; this he said to keep him safe from their hands, with the purpose of taking him back to his father again.22 르우벤이 또 그들에게 이르되 피를 흘리지 말라 그를 광야 그 구덩이에 던지고 손을 그에게 대지 말라 하니 이는 그가 요셉을 그들의 손에서 구원하여 그 아비에게로 돌리려 함이었더라
23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped ㆍ Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they took off his long coat which he had on;23 요셉이 형들에게 이르매 그 형들이 요셉의 옷 곧 그 입은 채색옷을 벗기고
24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.24 And they took him and put him in the hole: now the hole had no water in it.24 그를 잡아 구덩이에 던지니 그 구덩이는 빈 것이라 그 속에 물이 없었더라
25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.25 Then seating themselves, they took their meal: and looking up, they saw a travelling band of Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead on their way to Egypt, with spices and perfumes on their camels.25 그들이 앉아 음식을 먹다가 눈을 들어 본즉 한 떼 이스마엘 족속이 길르앗에서 오는데 그 약대들에 향품과 유향과 몰약을 싣고 애굽으로 내려가는지라
26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?26 And Judah said to his brothers, What profit is there in putting our brother to death and covering up his blood?26 유다가 자기 형제에게 이르되 우리가 우리 동생을 죽이고 그의 피를 은익한들 무엇이 유익할까
27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.27 Let us give him to these Ishmaelites for a price, and let us not put violent hands on him, for he is our brother, our flesh. And his brothers gave ear to him.27 자 그를 이스마엘 사람에게 팔고 우리 손을 그에게 대지 말자 그는 우리의 동생이요 우리의 골육이니라 하매 형제들이 청종하였더라
28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen ㆍ; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.28 And some traders from Midian went by; so pulling Joseph up out of the hole, they gave him to the Ishmaelites for twenty bits of silver, and they took him to Egypt.28 때에 미디안 사람 상고들이 지나는지라 그들이 요셉을 구덩이에서 끌어올리고 은 이십개에 그를 이스마엘 사람들에게 팔매 그 상고들이 요셉을 데리고 애굽으로 갔더라
29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.29 Now when Reuben came back to the hole, Joseph was not there; and giving signs of grief,29 르우벤이 돌아와서 구덩이에 이르러 본즉 거기 요셉이 없는지라 옷을 찢고
30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?30 He went back to his brothers, and said, The child is gone; what am I to do?30 아우들에게로 와서 가로되 아이가 없도다 나는 나는 어디로 갈까
31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;31 Then they took Joseph's coat, and put on it some of the blood from a young goat which they had put to death,31 그들이 요셉의 옷을 취하고 수염소를 죽여 그 옷을 피에 적시고
32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.32 And they took the coat to their father, and said, We came across this; is it your son's coat or not?32 그 채색옷을 보내어 그 아비에게로 가져다가 이르기를 우리가 이것을 얻었으니 아버지의 아들의 옷인가 아닌가 보소서 하매
33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.33 And he saw that it was, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast has put him to death; without doubt Joseph has come to a cruel end.33 아비가 그것을 알아보고 가로되 내 아들의 옷이라 악한 짐승이 그를 먹었도다 요셉이 정녕 찢겼도다 하고
34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.34 Then Jacob, giving signs of grief, put on haircloth, and went on weeping for his son day after day.34 자기 옷을 찢고 굵은 베로 허리를 묶고 오래도록 그 아들을 위하여 애통하니
35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.35 And all his sons and all his daughters came to give him comfort, but he would not be comforted, saying with weeping, I will go down to the underworld to my son. So great was his father's sorrow for him.35 그 모든 자녀가 위로하되 그가 그 위로를 받지 아니하여 가로되 내가 슬퍼하며 음부에 내려 아들에게로 가리라 하고 그 아비가 그를 위하여 울었더라
36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.36 And in Egypt the men of Midian gave him for a price to Potiphar, a captain of high position in Pharaoh's house.36 미디안 사람이 애굽에서 바로의 신하 시위대장 보디발에게 요셉을 팔았더라
