1 Now news came to Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, of all God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, and how the Lord had taken Israel out of Egypt.

6 And he said to Moses, I, your father-in-law, have come to you, with your wife and your two sons.

7 And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they askedeachother of theirwelfare; and they came into the tent.[x]MKJV: And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed down to him, and kissed him. 8 And Moses gave his father-in-law an account of all the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians because of Israel, and of all the troubles which had come on them by the way, and how the Lord had given them salvation.

9 And Jethrorejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.[x]MKJV: And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians. 9 And Jethro was glad because the Lord had been good to Israel, freeing them from the power of the Egyptians.

11 Now I am certain that the Lord is greater than all gods, for he has overcome them in their pride.

12 And Jethro, Moses father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaroncame, and all the elders of Israel, to eatbread with Moses father in lawbeforeGod.[x]MKJV: And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. And Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God. BBE: Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, made a burned offering to God: and Aaron came, with the chiefs of Israel, and had a meal with Moses' father-in-law, before God. 12 모세의 장인 이드로가 번제물과 희생을 하나님께 가져오매 아론과 이스라엘 모든 장로가 와서 모세의 장인과 함께 하나님 앞에서 떡을 먹으니라
13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Mosessat to judge the people: and the peoplestood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.[x]MKJV: And on the next day it happened that Moses sat to judge the people. And the people stood by Moses from the morning to the evening. BBE: Now on the day after, Moses took his seat to give decisions for the people: and the people were waiting before Moses from morning till evening. 13 Now on the day after, Moses took his seat to give decisions for the people: and the people were waiting before Moses from morning till evening.
14 And when Moses father in lawsaw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the peoplestand by thee from morning unto even?[x]MKJV: And when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What [is] this thing which you do to the people? Why do you sit alone by yourself, and all the people stand by you from morning to evening? BBE: And when Moses' father-in-law saw all he was doing, he said, What is this you are doing for the people? why are you seated here by yourself, with all the people waiting before you from morning till evening? 14 And when Moses' father-in-law saw all he was doing, he said, What is this you are doing for the people? why are you seated here by yourself, with all the people waiting before you from morning till evening?
14 모세의 장인이 모세가 백성에게 행하는 모든 일을 보고 가로되 그대가 이 백성에게 행하는 이 일이 어찜이뇨 어찌하여 그대는 홀로 앉았고 백성은 아침부터 저녁까지 그대의 곁에 섰느뇨
15 And Mosessaid unto his father in law, Because the peoplecome unto me to inquire of God:[x]MKJV: And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to inquire of God. BBE: And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to get directions from God: KAV: 모세가 자기 장인에게 대답하되, 백성이 내게로 와서 [하나님]께 여쭈려 하기 때문이니이다. 15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to get directions from God:

16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make themknow the statutes of God, and his laws.[x]MKJV: When they have a matter, they come to me. And I judge between one and another, and I make known the statutes of God and His laws. BBE: And if they have any question between themselves, they come to me, and I am judge between a man and his neighbour, and I give them the orders and laws of God. 17 And Moses father in lawsaid unto him, The thing that thou doestis not good.[x]MKJV: And Moses' father-in-law said to him, The thing that you do [is] not good. BBE: And Moses' father-in-law said to him, What you are doing is not good. KAV: 모세의 장인이 그에게 이르되, 그대가 행하는 일이 좋지 아니하도다.
17 And Moses' father-in-law said to him, What you are doing is not good.
17 모세의 장인이 그에게 이르되 그대의 하는 것이 선하지 못하도다
18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thingis too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.[x]MKJV: You will surely wear away, both you and this people that [is] with you. For this thing [is] too heavy for you; you are not able to perform it alone. BBE: Your strength and that of the people will be completely used up: this work is more than you are able to do by yourself. 18 Your strength and that of the people will be completely used up: this work is more than you are able to do by yourself.

19Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-wardㆍ, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:[x]MKJV: Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you. You be for the people toward God, that you may bring the causes to God. 19 이제 내 말을 들으라 내가 그대에게 방침을 가르치리니 하나님이 그대와 함께 계실찌로다 그대는 백성을 위하여 하나님 앞에 있어서 소송을 하나님께 베풀며
20 And thou shalt teachㆍ them ordinances and laws, and shalt show them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.[x]MKJV: And you shall teach them ordinances and laws, and shall make them know the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do. BBE: Teaching them his rules and his laws, guiding them in the way they have to go, and making clear to them the work they have to do. 21 But for the rest, take from among the people able men, such as have the fear of God, true men hating profits wrongly made; and put such men over them, to be captains of thousands, captains of hundreds and of fifties and of tens;
21 그대는 또 온 백성 가운데서 재덕이 겸전한 자 곧 하나님을 두려워하며 진실무망하며 불의한 이를 미워하는 자를 빼서 백성 위에 세워 천부장과 백부장과 오십부장과 십부장을 삼아
22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every greatmatter they shall bring unto thee, but every smallmatter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bearthe burden with thee.[x]MKJV: And let them judge the people at all times. And it shall be, every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge. And make it easier for yourself, and they shall bear with you. BBE: And let them be judges in the causes of the people at all times: and let them put before you all important questions, but in small things let them give decisions themselves: in this way, it will be less hard for you, and they will take the weight off you. 22 그들로 때를 따라 백성을 재판하게 하라 무릇 큰 일이면 그대에게 베풀 것이고 무릇 작은 일이면 그들이 스스로 재판할 것이니 그리하면 그들이 그대와 함께 담당할 것인즉 일이 그대에게 쉬우리라
23 If thou shalt do this thing, and Godcommand thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.[x]MKJV: If you will do this thing, and God command you, then you shall be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace. BBE: If you do this, and God gives approval, then you will be able to go on without weariness, and all this people will go to their tents in peace. KAV: 그대가 만일 이 일을 행하고 [하나님]께서도 그대에게 그리하라고 명령하시면 그대가 이 일을 감당하고 이 온 백성도 자기 처소로 평안히 가리라, 하니라. 23 그대가 만일 이 일을 하고 하나님께서도 그대에게 인가하시면 그대가 이 일을 감당하고 이 모든 백성도 자기 곳으로 평안히 가리라
24 So Moseshearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.[x]MKJV: And Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said. BBE: So Moses took note of the words of his father-in-law, and did as he had said. 25 이스라엘 무리 중에서 재덕이 겸전한 자를 빼서 그들로 백성의 두목 곧 천부장과 백부장과 오십부장과 십부장을 삼으매
26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hardcauses they brought unto Moses, but every smallmattertheyjudged themselves.[x]MKJV: And they judged the people at all times. The hard causes they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. BBE: And they were judges in the causes of the people at all times: the hard questions they put before Moses; but on every small point they gave decisions themselves. 26 And they were judges in the causes of the people at all times: the hard questions they put before Moses; but on every small point they gave decisions themselves.
