1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it iscommon among men:

1 내가 해 아래서 한가지 폐단 있는 것을 보았나니 이는 사람에게 중한 것이라
2 A man to whom God hath givenriches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a strangerㆍeateth it: this isvanity, and it is an evildisease.
2 A man to whom God gives money, wealth, and honour so that he has all his desires but God does not give him the power to have joy of it, and a strange man takes it. This is to no purpose and an evil disease.
2 어떤 사람은 그 심령의 모든 소원에 부족함이 없어 재물과 부요와 존귀를 하나님께 받았으나 능히 누리게 하심을 얻지 못하였으므로 다른 사람이 누리나니 이것도 헛되어 악한 병이로다
3 If a manbeget an hundredchildren, and livemanyyears, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birthisbetter than he.
3 If a man has a hundred children, and his life is long so that the days of his years are great in number, but his soul takes no pleasure in good, and he is not honoured at his death; I say that a birth before its time is better than he.
3 사람이 비록 일백 자녀를 낳고 또 장수하여 사는 날이 많을찌라도 그 심령에 낙이 족하지 못하고 또 그 몸이 매장되지 못하면 나는 이르기를 낙태된 자가 저보다 낫다 하노니
4 For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
4 In wind it came and to the dark it will go, and with the dark will its name be covered.
4 낙태된 자는 헛되이 왔다가 어두운 중에 가매 그 이름이 어두움에 덮이니
5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor knownany thing:this hath more restthan the other.
5 Yes, it saw not the sun, and it had no knowledge; it is better with this than with the other.
5 햇빛을 보지 못하고 알지 못하나 이가 저보다 평안함이라
6 Yea, though he live a thousandyearstwicetold, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to oneplace?
6 And though he goes on living a thousand years twice over and does not see good, are not the two going to the same place?
6 저가 비록 천년의 갑절을 산다 할찌라도 낙을 누리지 못하면 마침내 다 한곳으로 돌아가는 것뿐이 아니냐
7 All the labour of manis for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
7 All the work of man is for his mouth, and still he has a desire for food.
7 사람의 수고는 다 그 입을 위함이나 그 식욕은 차지 아니하느니라
8 For what hath the wisemore than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
8 What have the wise more than the foolish? and what has the poor man by walking wisely before the living?
8 지혜자가 우매자보다 나은 것이 무엇이뇨 인생 앞에서 행할줄을 아는 가난한 자는 무엇이 유익한고
9Betteris the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
9 What the eyes see is better than the wandering of desire. This is to no purpose and a desire for wind.
9 눈으로 보는 것이 심령의 공상보다 나으나 이것도 헛되어 바람을 잡으려는 것이로다
10 That which hath been is namedㆍalready, and it is known that it isman: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
10 That which is, has been named before, and of what man is there is knowledge. He has no power against one stronger than he.
10 이미 있는 무엇이든지 오래 전부터 그 이름이 칭한바 되었으며 사람이 무엇인지도 이미 안바 되었나니 자기보다 강한 자와 능히 다툴 수 없느니라
11 Seeing there bemanythings that increasevanity, what isman the better?
11 There are words without number for increasing what is to no purpose, but what is man profited by them?
11 헛된 것을 더하게 하는 많은 일이 있나니 사람에게 무엇이 유익하랴
12 For who knoweth what isgood for man in thislife, all the days of his vainlife which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
12 Who is able to say what is good for man in life all the days of his foolish life which he goes through like a shade? who will say what is to be after him under the sun?
12 헛된 생명의 모든 날을 그림자 같이 보내는 일평생에 사람에게 무엇이 낙인지 누가 알며 그 신후에 해 아래서 무슨 일이 있을 것을 누가 능히 그에게 고하리요
