1Deadflies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a littlefolly him that is in reputation for wisdomandhonour.
1 Dead flies make the oil of the perfumer give out an evil smell; more valued is a little wisdom than the great glory of the foolish.
1 죽은 파리가 향기름으로 악취가 나게 하는 것 같이 적은 우매가 지혜와 존귀로 패하게 하느니라
2 A wise man'sheartis at his right hand; but a fool'sheart at his left.
2 The heart of the wise man goes in the right direction; but the heart of a foolish man in the wrong.
2 지혜자의 마음은 오른 편에 있고 우매자의 마음은 왼편에 있느니라
3 Yea also, when he that is a foolwalketh by the way, his wisdomfailethhim, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
3 And when the foolish man is walking in the way, he has no sense and lets everyone see that he is foolish.
3 우매자는 길에 행할 때에도 지혜가 결핍하여 각 사람에게 자기의 우매한 것을 말하느니라
4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yieldingpacifiethgreatoffences.
4 If the wrath of the ruler is against you, keep in your place; in him who keeps quiet even great sins may be overlooked.
4 주권자가 네게 분을 일으키거든 너는 네 자리를 떠나지 말라 공순이 큰 허물을 경하게 하느니라

5 내가 해 아래서 한가지 폐단 곧 주권자에게서 나는 허물인듯한 것을 보았노니
6Folly is set in greatdignity, and the richsit in low place.
6 The foolish are placed in high positions, but men of wealth are kept low.
6 우매자가 크게 높은 지위를 얻고 부자가 낮은 지위에 앉는도다
7 I have seenservants upon horses, and princeswalking as servants upon the earth.
7 I have seen servants on horses, and rulers walking on the earth as servants.
7 또 보았노니 종들은 말을 타고 방백들은 종처럼 땅에 걸어 다니는도다
8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
8 He who makes a hole for others will himself go into it, and for him who makes a hole through a wall the bite of a snake will be a punishment.
8 함정을 파는 자는 거기 빠질 것이요 담을 허는 자는 뱀에게 물리리라
9 Whoso removethstones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleavethwood shall be endangered thereby.
9 He who gets out stones from the earth will be damaged by them, and in the cutting of wood there is danger.
9 돌을 떠내는 자는 그로 인하여 상할 것이요 나무를 쪼개는 자는 그로 인하여 위험을 당하리라
10 If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdomisprofitable to direct.
10 If the iron has no edge, and he does not make it sharp, then he has to put out more strength; but wisdom makes things go well.
10 무딘 철 연장 날을 갈지 아니하면 힘이 더 드느니라 오직 지혜는 성공하기에 유익하니라
11 Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbleris no better.
11 If a snake gives a bite before the word of power is said, then there is no longer any use in the word of power.
11 방술을 베풀기 전에 뱀에게 물렸으면 술객은 무용하니라
12 The words of a wise man'smoutharegracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
12 The words of a wise man's mouth are sweet to all, but the lips of a foolish man are his destruction.
12 지혜자의 입의 말은 은혜로우나 우매자의 입술은 자기를 삼키나니
13 The beginning of the words of his mouthisfoolishness: and the end of his talkismischievousmadness.
13 The first words of his mouth are foolish, and the end of his talk is evil crime.
13 그 입의 말의 시작은 우매요 끝은 광패니라
14 A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
14 The foolish are full of words; man has no knowledge of what will be; and who is able to say what will be after him?
14 우매자는 말을 많이 하거니와 사람이 장래 일을 알지 못하나니 신후사를 알게 할 자가 누구이냐
15 The labour of the foolishwearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
15 The work of the foolish will be a weariness to him, because he has no knowledge of the way to the town.
15 우매자들의 수고는 제각기 곤하게 할 뿐이라 저희는 성읍에 들어갈 줄도 알지 못함이니라
16Woe to thee, O land, when thy kingis a child, and thy princeseat in the morning!
16 Unhappy is the land whose king is a boy, and whose rulers are feasting in the morning.
16 왕은 어리고 대신들은 아침에 연락하는 이 나라여 화가 있도다
17Blessedart thou, O land, when thy kingis the son of nobles, and thy princeseat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
17 Happy is the land whose ruler is of noble birth, and whose chiefs take food at the right time, for strength and not for feasting.
17 왕은 귀족의 아들이요 대신들은 취하려함이 아니라 기력을 보하려고 마땅한 때에 먹는 이 나라여 복이 있도다
18 By much slothfulness the buildingdecayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
18 When no work is done the roof goes in, and when the hands do nothing water comes into the house.
18 게으른즉 석가래가 퇴락하고 손이 풀어진즉 집이 새느니라
19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merryㆍ: but moneyanswereth all things.
19 A feast is for laughing, and wine makes glad the heart; but by the one and the other money is wasted.
19 잔치는 희락을 위하여 베푸는 것이요 포도주는 생명을 기쁘게 하는 것이나 돈은 범사에 응용되느니라
20Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamberㆍ: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hathwings shall tell the matter.
20 Say not a curse against the king, even in your thoughts; and even secretly say not a curse against the man of wealth; because a bird of the air will take the voice, and that which has wings will give news of it.
20 심중에라도 왕을 저주하지 말며 침방에서라도 부자를 저주하지 말라 공중의 새가 그 소리를 전하고 날짐승이 그 일을 전파할 것임이니라
