1 When the nations, whose land the Lord your God is giving you, have been cut off by him, and you have taken their place and are living in their towns and in their houses;

2 You are to have three towns marked out in the land which the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage.

3 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.[x]MKJV: You shall prepare you a way, and divide the borders of your land which the LORD your God gives you to inherit, into three parts, so that every slayer may flee there. BBE: You are to make ready a way, and see that the land which the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage, is marked out into three parts, to which any taker of life may go in flight. 3 You are to make ready a way, and see that the land which the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage, is marked out into three parts, to which any taker of life may go in flight.
3 네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 유업으로 주시는 땅의 전체를 삼구로 분하여 그 도로를 닦고 무릇 살인자를 그 성읍으로 도피케 하라
4 And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbourignorantlyㆍ, whom he hated not in timepast;[x]MKJV: And this [is] the case of the slayer who shall flee there that he may live: whoever in error kills his neighbor whom he did not hate him before, BBE: This is to be the rule for anyone who goes in flight there, after causing the death of his neighbour in error and not through hate; KAV: ¶ 살인자가 거기로 도피하여 살 수 있는 경우는 이러하니 곧 누구든지 과거에 자기 이웃을 미워한 적이 없이 알지 못하는 가운데 그를 죽인 경우니라. 4 This is to be the rule for anyone who goes in flight there, after causing the death of his neighbour in error and not through hate;

5 For example, if a man goes into the woods with his neighbour for the purpose of cutting down trees, and when he takes his axe to give a blow to the tree, the head of the axe comes off, and falling on to his neighbour gives him a wound causing his death; then the man may go in flight to one of these towns and be safe:
5 가령 사람이 그 이웃과 함께 벌목하러 삼림에 들어가서 손에 도끼를 들고 벌목하려고 찍을 때에 도끼가 자루에서 빠져 그 이웃을 맞춰 그로 죽게함 같은 것이라 이런 사람은 그 성읍중 하나로 도피하여 생명을 보존할 것이니라
6 Lest the avenger of the bloodpursue the slayerㆍ, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slayhim; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in timepast.[x]MKJV: so that the avenger of the blood may not pursue the slayer while his heart is hot, and overtake him because the way is long, and kill him, and he had no sentence worthy of death, for he did not hate him in time past. BBE: For if not, he who has the right of punishment may go running after the taker of life in the heat of his wrath, and overtake him because the way is long, and give him a death-blow; though it is not right for him to be put to death because he was not moved by hate. 10 That innocentblood be not shedin thy land, which the LORD thy Godgiveth thee for an inheritance, and soblood be upon thee.[x]MKJV: so that innocent blood may not be shed in your land which the LORD your God gives you [for] an inheritance and blood may not be on you. BBE: So that in all your land, which the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage, no man may be wrongly put to death, for which you will be responsible. 11 But if any manhate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of thesecities:[x]MKJV: But if a man hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him and rises up against him and strikes his life from him, so that he dies, and flees to one of these cities, BBE: But if any man has hate for his neighbour, and waiting for him secretly makes an attack on him and gives him a blow causing his death, and then goes in flight to one of these towns; KAV: ¶ 그러나 어떤 사람이 자기 이웃을 미워하여 숨어서 그를 기다리다가 일어나 그를 치되 죽도록 쳐서 그를 죽게 하고 이 도시들 중 하나로 도피하거든 TSK: But if any: de 27:24, ge 9:6, ex 21:12-14, nu 35:16-21,24, pr 28:17
11 But if any man has hate for his neighbour, and waiting for him secretly makes an attack on him and gives him a blow causing his death, and then goes in flight to one of these towns;
11 그러나 만일 사람이 그 이웃을 미워하여 엎드려 그를 기다리다가 일어나 쳐서 그 생명을 상하여 죽게 하고 이 한 성읍으로 도피하거든
12 Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.[x]MKJV: then the elders of his city shall send and bring him away from there and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood so that he may die. BBE: The responsible men of his town are to send and take him, and give him up to the one who has the right of punishment to be put to death. 12 The responsible men of his town are to send and take him, and give him up to the one who has the right of punishment to be put to death.

13 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put awaythe guilt ofinnocentblood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.[x]MKJV: Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away innocent blood from Israel, so that it may go well with you. BBE: Have no pity on him, so that Israel may be clear from the crime of putting a man to death without cause, and it will be well for you. 14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour'slandmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy Godgiveth thee to possess it.[x]MKJV: You may not remove your neighbor's landmark, which those in the past have set in your inheritance, which you shall inherit in the land which the LORD your God gives you to possess it. BBE: Your neighbour's landmark, which was put in its place by the men of old times, is not to be moved or taken away in the land of your heritage which the Lord your God is giving you. 14 Your neighbour's landmark, which was put in its place by the men of old times, is not to be moved or taken away in the land of your heritage which the Lord your God is giving you.

15Onewitness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of twowitnesses, or at the mouth of threewitnesses, shall the matter be established.[x]MKJV: One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sins. At the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be made sure. 16 If a false witness makes a statement against a man, saying that he has done wrong,

18 And the judges shall make diligentinquisition: and, behold, if the witnessbe a falsewitness, and hath testifiedfalsely against his brother;[x]MKJV: And the judges shall make careful inquiry. 18 And the judges will have the question looked into with care: and if the witness is seen to be false and to have made a false statement against his brother,
