5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy ㆍ, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.	5 But the Jews, being moved with envy, took with them certain low persons from among the common people, and getting together a great number of people, made an outcry in the town, attacking the house of Jason with the purpose of taking them out to the people.	5 그러나 유대인들은 시기하여 저자의 어떤 괴악한 사람들을 데리고 떼를 지어 성을 소동케 하여 야손의 집에 달려들어 저희를 백성에게 끌어 내려고 찾았으나

6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying ㆍ, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;	6 And when they were not able to get them, they took Jason and some of the brothers by force before the rulers of the town, crying, These men, who have made trouble all over the world have now come here;	6 발견치 못하매 야손과 및 형제를 끌고 읍장들 앞에 가서 소리질러 가로되 천하를 어지럽게 하던 이 사람들이 여기도 이르매

9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.	9 And having made Jason and the others give an undertaking to keep the peace, they let them go.	9 야손과 그 나머지 사람들에게 보를 받고 놓으니라

10 And the brethren immediately sent away ㆍ Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.	10 And the brothers straight away sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea: and they, when they came there, went to the Synagogue of the Jews.	10 밤에 형제들이 곧 바울과 실라를 베뢰아로 보내니 저희가 이르러 유대인의 회당에 들어가니라

11 ㆍ These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily ㆍ, whether those things were so.	11 Now these were more noble than the Jews of Thessalonica, for they gave serious attention to the word, searching in the holy Writings every day, to see if these things were so.	11 베뢰아 사람은 데살로니가에 있는 사람보다 더 신사적이어서 간절한 마음으로 말씀을 받고 이것이 그러한가 하여 날마다 성경을 상고하므로

12 Therefore ㆍ many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.	12 And a number of them had faith, and no small number of the Greek women of high position and of the men.	12 그중에 믿는 사람이 많고 또 헬라의 귀부인과 남자가 적지 아니하나

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.	13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had news that Paul was preaching the word at Beroea, they came there, troubling the people and working them up.	13 데살로니가에 있는 유대인들이 바울이 하나님 말씀을 베뢰아에서도 전하는 줄을 알고 거기도 가서 무리를 움직여 소동케 하거늘

14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but ㆍ Silas and Timotheus abode there still.	14 So the brothers sent Paul straight away to the sea: but Silas and Timothy kept there still.	14 형제들이 곧 바울을 내어 보내어 바다까지 가게 하되 실라와 디모데는 아직 거기 유하더라

15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed ㆍ, they departed.	15 But those who went with Paul took him as far as Athens, and then went away, with orders from him to Silas and Timothy to come to him quickly.	15 바울을 인도하는 사람들이 데리고 아덴까지 이르러 바울에게서 실라와 디모데를 자기에게로 속히 오게 하라는 명을 받고 떠나니라

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.	16 Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was troubled, for he saw all the town full of images of the gods.	16 바울이 아덴에서 저희를 기다리다가 온 성에 우상이 가득한 것을 보고 마음에 분하여

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily ㆍ ㆍ with them that met with him.	17 So he had discussions in the Synagogue with the Jews and God-fearing Gentiles, and every day in the market-place with those who were there.	17 회당에서는 유대인과 경건한 사람들과 또 저자에서는 날마다 만나는 사람들과 변론하니

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will ㆍ this babbler say ㆍ? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.	18 And some of those who were supporters of the theories of the Epicureans and the Stoics, had a meeting with him. And some said, What is this talker of foolish words saying? And others, He seems to be a preacher of strange gods: because he was preaching of Jesus and his coming back from the dead.	18 어떤 에비구레오와 스도이고 철학자들도 바울과 쟁론할쌔 혹은 이르되 이 말장이가 무슨 말을 하고자 하느뇨 하고 혹은 이르되 이방 신들을 전하는 사람인가보다 하니 이는 바울이 예수와 또 몸의 부활 전함을 인함이러라

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?	19 And they took him to Mars' Hill, saying, Will you make clear to us what is this new teaching of yours?	19 붙들어 가지고 아레오바고로 가며 말하기를 우리가 너의 말하는 이 새 교가 무엇인지 알수 있겠느냐

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.	20 For you seem to us to say strange things, and we have a desire to get the sense of them.	20 네가 무슨 이상한 것을 우리 귀에 들려 주니 그 무슨 뜻인지 알고자 하노라 하니

21 ㆍ (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)	21 (Now all the Athenians and the men from other lands who come there were giving all their time to talking or hearing of anything new.)	21 모든 아덴 사람과 거기서 나그네 된 외국인들이 가장 새로되는 것을 말하고 듣는 이외에 달리는 시간을 쓰지 않음이더라

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.	22 And Paul got to his feet on Mars' Hill and said, O men of Athens, I see that you are overmuch given to fear of the gods.	22 바울이 아레오바고 가운데 서서 말하되 아덴 사람들아 너희를 보니 범사에 종교성이 많도다

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions ㆍ, I found an altar with this ㆍ inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.	23 For when I came by, I was looking at the things to which you give worship, and I saw an altar with this writing on it, TO THE GOD OF WHOM THERE IS NO KNOWLEDGE. Now, what you, without knowledge, give worship to, I make clear to you.	23 내가 두루 다니며 너희의 위하는 것들을 보다가 알지 못하는 신에게라고 새긴 단도 보았으니 그런즉 너희가 알지 못하고 위하는 그것을 내가 너희에게 알게 하리라

24 God that made the world and all things therein ㆍ, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;	24 The God who made the earth and everything in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, is not housed in buildings made with hands;	24 우주와 그 가운데 있는 만유를 지으신 신께서는 천지의 주재시니 손으로 지은 전에 계시지 아니하시고

25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;	25 And he is not dependent on the work of men's hands, as if he had need of anything, for he himself gives to all life and breath and all things;	25 또 무엇이 부족한 것처럼 사람의 손으로 섬김을 받으시는 것이 아니니 이는 만민에게 생명과 호흡과 만물을 친히 주시는 자이심이라

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;	26 And he has made of one blood all the nations of men living on all the face of the earth, ordering their times and the limits of their lands,	26 인류의 모든 족속을 한 혈통으로 만드사 온 땅에 거하게 하시고 저희의 년대를 정하시며 거주의 경계를 한하셨으니

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:	27 So that they might make search for God, in order, if possible, to get knowledge of him and make discovery of him, though he is not far from every one of us:	27 이는 사람으로 하나님을 혹 더듬어 찾아 발견케 하려 하심이로되 그는 우리 각 사람에게서 멀리 떠나 계시지 아니하도다

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.	28 For in him we have life and motion and existence; as certain of your verse writers have said, For we are his offspring.	28 우리가 그를 힘입어 살며 기동하며 있느니라 너희 시인 중에도 어떤 사람들의 말과 같이 우리가 그의 소생이라 하니

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.	29 If then we are the offspring of God, it is not right for us to have the idea that God is like gold or silver or stone, formed by the art or design of man.	29 이와 같이 신의 소생이 되었은즉 신을 금이나 은이나 돌에다 사람의 기술과 고안으로 새긴 것들과 같이 여길 것이 아니니라

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:	30 Those times when men had no knowledge were overlooked by God; but now he gives orders to all men in every place to undergo a change of heart:	30 알지 못하던 시대에는 하나님이 허물치 아니하셨거니와 이제는 어디든지 사람을 다 명하사 회개하라 하셨으니

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.	31 Because a day has been fixed in which all the world will be judged in righteousness by the man who has been marked out by him for this work; of which he has given a sign to all men by giving him back from the dead.	31 이는 정하신 사람으로 하여금 천하를 공의로 심판할 날을 작정하시고 이에 저를 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리신 것으로 모든 사람에게 믿을만한 증거를 주셨음이니라 하니라

32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.	32 Now on hearing about the coming back from death, some of them made sport of it, but others said, Let us go more fully into this another time.	32 저희가 죽은 자의 부활을 듣고 혹은 기롱도 하고 혹은 이 일에 대하여 네 말을 다시 듣겠다 하니

King James English

KJ English(1611년~)는 셰익스피어의 영어문장처럼 현대 영문법과 약간 다릅니다. 하지만 몇 가지 차이만 알면 오히려 요즘 영어문장보다 더 정확한 내용 이해와 문장의 맛을 느낄 수 있습니다.

상대편(2인칭)에게 말할 때 단수, 복수를 구분합니다. 복수(너희)이면 ye, you, your, yours, yourself를, 단수(너)이면 thou, thee, thy, thine, thyself입니다. 요즘 영어와 달리 "너"와 "너희"가 명확히 구분됩니다!
3인칭 현재동사는 -th나 -eth로 끝나는데 요즘 영어문장에서 -s나 -es와 같습니다.
-st나 -est로 끝나는 동사는 직설법을 말하는 데, 생략하고 읽으면 됩니다.
