1 Now it was clear to Joab, the son of Zeruiah, that the king's heart was turning to Absalom.

2 And Joabsent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wisewoman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on now mourningapparel, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that had a longtimemourned for the dead:[x]MKJV: And Joab sent to Tekoah and brought a wise woman from there. And he said to her, Please pretend yourself to be a mourner, and put on mourning clothes now, and do not anoint yourself with oil. But be like a woman who has mourned for the dead a long time. 2 And Joab sent to Tekoa and got from there a wise woman, and said to her, Now make yourself seem like one given up to grief, and put on the clothing of sorrow, not using any sweet oil for your body, but looking like one who for a long time has been weeping for the dead:

3 And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joabput the words in her mouth.[x]MKJV: And come to the king, and speak in this way to him. And Joab put the words in her mouth. 3 And come to the king and say these words to him. So Joab gave her words to say.

4 And when the woman of Tekoahspake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.[x]MKJV: And the woman of Tekoah spoke to the king, and bowed and said, Save, O, King! 4 And the woman of Tekoa came to the king, and falling on her face, gave him honour and said, Give me help, O king.

5 And the kingsaid unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I amindeed a widowwoman, and mine husband is dead.[x]MKJV: And the king said to her. What ails you? And she answered, I [am] indeed a widow, and my husband died. BBE: And the king said to her, What is your trouble? And her answer was, Truly I am a widow, and my husband is dead. 5 And the king said to her, What is your trouble? And her answer was, Truly I am a widow, and my husband is dead.

6 And thy handmaid had twosons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the onesmote the other, and slew him.[x]MKJV: And your handmaid had two sons, and the two of them fought together in the field. And [there was] no deliverer between them, but the one struck the other and killed him. BBE: And I had two sons, and the two of them had a fight in the field, and there was no one to come between them, and one with a blow put the other to death. 6 And I had two sons, and the two of them had a fight in the field, and there was no one to come between them, and one with a blow put the other to death.

7 And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husbandneithername nor remainderupon the earth.[x]MKJV: And behold, the whole family has risen against your handmaid. And they said, Deliver him who struck his brother so that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he killed. And we will destroy the heir also. BBE: And now all the family is turned against me, your servant, saying, Give up him who was the cause of his brother's death, so that we may put him to death in payment for the life of his brother, whose life he took; and we will put an end to the one who will get the heritage: so they will put out my last burning coal, and my husband will have no name or offspring on the face of the earth. 7 온 족속이 일어나서 왕의 계집종 나를 핍박하여 말하기를 그 동생을 죽인 자를 내어놓으라 우리가 그 동생 죽인 죄를 갚아 저를 죽여 사자 될것까지 끊겠노라 하오니 그러한즉 저희가 내게 남아 있는 숯불을 꺼서 내 남편의 이름과 씨를 세상에 끼쳐두지 아니하겠나이다
8 And the kingsaid unto the woman, Go to thine house, and I will give charge concerning thee.[x]MKJV: And the king said to the woman, Go to your house, and I will give command concerning you. BBE: And the king said to the woman, Go to your house and I will give orders about this. KAV: 왕이 여인에게 이르되, 네 집으로 가라. 내가 너에 관하여 명을 내리리라, 하니라. 8 And the king said to the woman, Go to your house and I will give orders about this.

9 And the woman of Tekoahsaid unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquitybe on me, and on my father'shouse: and the king and his thronebeguiltless.[x]MKJV: And the woman of Tekoah said to the king. My lord, O king, may the iniquity [be] on me and on my father's house. And may the king and his throne [be] without guilt. BBE: And the woman of Tekoa said to the king, My lord, O king, may the sin be on me and on my family, and may the king and the seat of his kingdom be clear of sin! 9 And the woman of Tekoa said to the king, My lord, O king, may the sin be on me and on my family, and may the king and the seat of his kingdom be clear of sin!
9 드고아 여인이 왕께 고하되 내 주 왕이여 그 죄는 나와 내 아비의 집으로 돌릴 것이니 왕과 왕위는 허물이 없으리이다
10 And the kingsaid, Whosoever saithought unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.[x]MKJV: And the king said, Whoever speaks to you, you also bring him to me, and he shall not touch you any more. BBE: And the king said, If anyone says anything to you, make him come to me, and he will do you no more damage. KAV: 왕이 이르되, 누구든지 네게 조금이라도 말하면 그를 내게로 데려오라. 그가 다시는 너를 건드리지 못하리라, 하니라.
10 And the king said, If anyone says anything to you, make him come to me, and he will do you no more damage.
10 왕이 가로되 누구든지 네게 말하는 자를 내게로 데려오라 저가 다시는 너를 건드리지도 못하리라
11 Then said she, I pray thee, let the kingremember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORDliveth, there shall not one hair of thy sonfall to the earth.[x]MKJV: Then she said, Please let the king remember the LORD your God, that you would not allow the avengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they should destroy my son. And he said, [As] the Lord lives, there shall not one hair of your son fall to the earth. BBE: Then she said, Let the king keep in mind the Lord your God, so that he who gives punishment for blood may be kept back from further destruction and that no one may send death on my son. And he said, By the living Lord, not a hair of your son's head will come to the earth. 11 여인이 가로되 청컨대 왕은 왕의 하나님 여호와를 생각하사 원수 갚는 자로 더 죽이지 못하게 하옵소서 내 아들을 죽일까 두려워하나이다 왕이 가로되 여호와의 사심을 가리켜 맹세하노니 네 아들의 머리카락 하나라도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하리라
12 Then the womansaid, Let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speakoneword unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.[x]MKJV: Then the woman said, Please let your handmaid speak [one] more word to my lord the king. And he said, Say on! BBE: Then the woman said, Will the king let his servant say one word more? And he said, Say on. 12 Then the woman said, Will the king let his servant say one word more? And he said, Say on.
12 여인이 가로되 청컨대 계집종을 용납하여 한 말씀으로 내 주 왕께 여쭙게 하옵소서 가로되 말하라
13 And the womansaid, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished.[x]MKJV: And the woman said, Why then have you thought such a thing against the people of God? For the king speaks this thing as one who is at fault, in that the king does not bring his banished one home again. BBE: And the woman said, Why have you had such a thought about the people of God? (for in saying these very words the king has put himself in the wrong because he has not taken back the one whom he sent far away.) KAV: 여인이 이르되, 그러면 어찌하여 왕께서는 [하나님]의 백성을 향해 그런 일을 생각하셨나이까? 왕께서는 자신의 내쫓은 자를 다시 집으로 불러오지 아니하심으로써 허물 있는 사람같이 이 일을 말씀하시나이다. 13 And the woman said, Why have you had such a thought about the people of God? (for in saying these very words the king has put himself in the wrong because he has not taken back the one whom he sent far away.)
13 여인이 가로되 그러면 어찌하여 왕께서 하나님의 백성에게 대하여 이같은 도모를 하셨나이까 이 말씀을 하셨으니 왕께서 죄 있는 사람 같이 되심은 그 내어쫓긴 자를 집으로 돌아오게 아니하심이니이다
14 For we must needsdie, and are as waterspilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth Godrespectanyperson: yet doth he devisemeans, that his banished be not expelled from him.[x]MKJV: For we must all die, and we [are] as water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. And God does not take a life, but has devised plans so that the outcast is not cast out from Him. BBE: For death comes to us all, and we are like water drained out on the earth, which it is not possible to take up again; and God will not take away the life of the man whose purpose is that he who has been sent away may not be completely cut off from him. 15 Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaidsaid, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.[x]MKJV: And now I have come to speak of this thing to my lord the king, because the people have made me afraid. And your handmaid said, I will now speak to the king. It may be that the king will do what his handmaid has asked. BBE: And now it is my fear of the people which has made me come to say these words to my lord the king: and your servant said, I will put my cause before the king, and it may be that he will give effect to my request. KAV: 그러므로 이제 내가 와서 내 주 왕께 이 일을 말씀드리는 것은 백성들이 나를 두렵게 하였기 때문이니이다. 왕의 여종이 말하기를, 이제 내가 왕께 말하리니 그리하면 혹시 왕께서 자기 여종의 요청하는 것을 시행하시리라.
15 And now it is my fear of the people which has made me come to say these words to my lord the king: and your servant said, I will put my cause before the king, and it may be that he will give effect to my request.
15 이제 내가 와서 내 주 왕께 이 말씀을 여쭙는 것은 백성들이 나를 두렵게 하므로 계집종이 스스로 말하기를 내가 왕께 여쭈면 혹시 종의 청하는 것을 시행하실 것이라
16 For the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the manthat woulddestroy me and my sontogether out of the inheritance of God.[x]MKJV: For the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the man [who would] destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God. BBE: For the king will give ear, and take his servant out of the power of the man whose purpose is the destruction of me and my son together from the heritage of God. KAV: 왕께서 들으시고 나와 내 아들을 [하나님]의 상속 재산에서 끄집어내어 함께 멸하려 하는 사람의 손에서부터 왕의 여종을 건져 내리라, 하였나이다.
16 For the king will give ear, and take his servant out of the power of the man whose purpose is the destruction of me and my son together from the heritage of God.
16 왕께서 들으시고 나와 내 아들을 함께 하나님의 산업에서 끊을 자의 손에서 종을 구원하시리라 함이니이다
17 Then thine handmaidsaid, The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discerngood and bad: therefore the LORD thy God will be with thee.[x]MKJV: And your handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall now be comforting. For as an angel of God, so [is] my lord the king, to see what is good and bad. And the LORD your God will be with you. BBE: Then your servant said, May the word of my lord the king give me peace! for my lord the king is as the angel of God in his hearing of good and bad: and may the Lord your God be with you! 17 계집종이 또 스스로 말하기를 내 주 왕의 말씀이 나의 위로가 되기를 원한다 하였사오니 이는 내 주 왕께서 하나님의 사자 같이 선과 악을 분간하심이니이다 원컨대 왕의 하나님 여호와께서 왕과 같이 계시옵소서
18 Then the kinganswered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the womansaid, Let my lord the king now speak.[x]MKJV: And the king answered and said to the woman, Please do not hide from me the thing that I shall ask you. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak. BBE: Then the king said to the woman, Now give me an answer to the question I am going to put to you; keep nothing back. And the woman said, Let my lord the king say on. KAV: 그때에 왕이 그 여인에게 응답하여 이르되, 원하노니 내가 네게 묻는 것을 내게 숨기지 말라, 하거늘 여인이 이르되, 내 주 왕은 이제 말씀하옵소서, 하매 TSK: Hide not: 1sa 3:17,18, jer 38:14,25
18 Then the king said to the woman, Now give me an answer to the question I am going to put to you; keep nothing back. And the woman said, Let my lord the king say on.
18 왕이 그 여인에게 대답하여 이르되 내가 네게 묻는 것을 숨기지 말라 여인이 가로되 내 주 왕은 말씀하옵소서
19 And the kingsaid, Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the womananswered and said, As thy soulliveth, my lord the king, nonecan turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servantJoab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine handmaid:[x]MKJV: And the king said, [Is] the hand of Joab with you in all this? And the woman answered and said, [As] your soul lives, my lord the king, none shall turn to the right hand or to the left from anything which my lord the king has spoken. For your servant Joab commanded me. And he put all these words in the mouth of your handmaid. BBE: And the king said, Is not the hand of Joab with you in all this? 19 왕이 가로되 이 모든 일에 요압이 너와 함께 하였느냐 여인이 대답하여 가로되 내 주 왕의 사심을 가리켜 맹세하옵나니 무릇 내 주 왕의 말씀을 좌로나 우로나 옮길 자가 없으리이다 왕의 종 요압이 내게 명하였고 저가 이 모든 말을 왕의 계집종의 입에 넣어주었사오니
20To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servantJoabdone this thing: and my lordiswise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.[x]MKJV: Your servant Joab has done this thing to change the face of the matter. And my lord [is] wise according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all that is in the land. BBE: This he did, hoping that the face of this business might be changed: and my lord is wise, with the wisdom of the angel of God, having knowledge of everything on earth. KAV: 왕의 종 요압이 이런 식으로 말을 돌려서 하게 하려고 이 일을 행하였나이다. 내 주 왕은 지혜롭되 [하나님]의 천사의 지혜에 따라 지혜로우사 땅에 있는 모든 일을 아시나이다, 하니라. 20 This he did, hoping that the face of this business might be changed: and my lord is wise, with the wisdom of the angel of God, having knowledge of everything on earth.
20 이는 왕의 종 요압이 이 일의 형편을 변하려 하여 이렇게 함이니이다 내 주 왕의 지혜는 하나님의 사자의 지혜와 같아서 땅에 있는 일을 다 아시나이다 하니라
21 And the kingsaid unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young manAbsalomagain.[x]MKJV: And the king said to Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing. Go therefore and bring the young man Absalom again. BBE: And the king said to Joab, See now, I will do this thing: go then and Come back with the young man Absalom. 21 And the king said to Joab, See now, I will do this thing: go then and Come back with the young man Absalom.
21 왕이 요압에게 이르되 내가 이 일을 허락하였으니 가서 소년 압살롬을 데려 오라
22 And Joabfell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joabsaid, To day thy servantknoweth that I have foundgrace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.[x]MKJV: And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king. And Joab said, Today your servant knows that I have found grace in your sight, my lord, O, king, in that the king has done what your servant has asked. 22 Then Joab, falling down on his face on the earth, gave the king honour and blessing; and Joab said, Today it is clear to your servant that I have grace in your eyes, my lord king, because the king has given effect to the request of his servant.
22 요압이 땅에 엎드려 절하고 왕을 위하여 복을 빌고 가로되 내 주 왕이여 종의 구함을 허락하시니 종이 왕 앞에서 은혜 받은줄을 오늘날 아나이다 하고
23 So Joabarose and went to Geshur, and broughtAbsalom to Jerusalem.[x]MKJV: And Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. 24 And the king said, Let him go to his house, but let him not see my face. So Absalom went back to his house and did not see the face of the king.

25 Now in all Israel there was no one so greatly to be praised for his beautiful form as Absalom: from his feet to the crown of his head he was completely beautiful.

26 And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year'sㆍend that he polledit: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundredshekels after the king'sweight.[x]MKJV: And when he sheared his head (for it was at every year's end that he sheared it, because it was heavy on him. And he sheared it), and he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, according to the king's weight. 26 And when he had his hair cut, (which he did at the end of every year, because of the weight of his hair;) the weight of the hair was two hundred shekels by the king's weight.

27 And unto Absalom there were bornthreesons, and onedaughter, whose namewasTamar: she was a woman of a faircountenance.[x]MKJV: And there were born three sons to Absalom, and one daughter, whose name [was] Tamar. She was a woman with a beautiful face. BBE: And Absalom was the father of three sons and of one daughter named Tamar, who was very beautiful. 27 And Absalom was the father of three sons and of one daughter named Tamar, who was very beautiful.

28 So Absalomdwelt two fullyears in Jerusalem, and saw not the king'sface.[x]MKJV: And Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem and did not see the king's face. 29 Then Absalom sent for Joab to send him to the king, but he would not come to him: and he sent again a second time, but he would not come.

30 Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab'sfield is nearmine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. 30 So he said to his servants, See, Joab's field is near mine, and he has barley in it; go and put it on fire. And Absalom's servants put the field on fire.

31 Then Joabarose, and came to Absalom unto hishouse, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servantsset my field on fire?[x]MKJV: And Joab arose and came to Absalom's house, and said to him, Why have your servants set my field on fire? BBE: Then Joab came to Absalom in his house and said to him, Why have your servants put my field on fire? KAV: 그때에 요압이 일어나 압살롬에게로, 그의 집으로 와서 그에게 이르되, 어찌하여 네 종들이 내 밭에 불을 놓았느냐? 하매
31 Then Joab came to Absalom in his house and said to him, Why have your servants put my field on fire?
31 요압이 일어나 압살롬의 집으로 와서 압살롬에게 이르되 어찌하여 네 종들이 내 밭에 불을 놓았느냐
32 And AbsalomansweredJoab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had beengood for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king'sface; and if there beanyiniquity in me, let him kill me.[x]MKJV: And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent to you, saying, Come here so that I may send you to the king, to say, Why [have] I come from Geshur? It [was] good for me to be there still. And now let me see the king's face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me. BBE: And Absalom's answer was, See, I sent to you saying, Come here, so that I may send you to the king to say, Why have I come back from Geshur? it would be better for me to be there still: let me now see the king's face, and if there is any sin in me, let him put me to death. KAV: 압살롬이 요압에게 대답하되, 보라, 내가 네게로 사람을 보내어 이르기를, 여기로 오라, 하였나니 이것은 내가 너를 왕에게 보내어 말하게 하기를, 어찌하여 나를 그술에서 오게 하였나이까? 여전히 거기 있는 것이 내게 좋았으리이다, 하려 함이로다. 그러므로 이제 내가 왕의 얼굴을 보게 하라. 내게 무슨 불법이 있거든 왕이 나를 죽이게 하라, 하니라. 32 압살롬이 요압에게 대답하되 내가 일찍 사람을 네게 보내어 너를 이리로 청한 것은 내가 너를 왕께 보내어 고하게 하기를 어찌하여 내가 그술에서 돌아오게 되었나이까 이때까지 거기 있는 것이 내게 나았으리이다 하려 함이로라 이제는 네가 나로 왕의 얼굴을 보게 하라 내가 만일 죄가 있으면 왕이 나를 죽이시는 것이 가하니라
33 So Joabcame to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the groundbefore the king: and the kingkissedAbsalom.[x]MKJV: And Joab came to the king and told him. And when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom. BBE: So Joab went to the king and said these words to him: and when the king had sent for him, Absalom came, and went down on his face on the earth before the king: and the king gave him a kiss.
