2 Then saidDavid, I will showkindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his fathershowedkindness unto me. And Davidsent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. 2 And David said, I will be a friend to Hanun, the son of Nahash, as his father was a friend to me. So David sent his servants, to give him words of comfort on account of his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

3 And the princes of the children of Ammonsaid unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sentcomforters unto thee? hath not Davidrathersent his servants unto thee, tosearch the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?[x]MKJV: And the leaders of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, Do you think that David honors your father, that he has sent comforters to you? 3 But the chiefs of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, Does it seem to you that David is honouring your father by sending comforters to you? has he not sent his servants to go through the town and make secret observation of it, and overcome it?
3 암몬 자손의 방백들이 그 주 하눈에게 고하되 왕은 다윗이 조객을 보낸 것이 왕의 부친을 공경함인 줄로 여기시나이까 다윗이 그 신복을 보내어 이 성을 엿보고 탐지하여 함락시키고자 함이 아니니이까
4 Wherefore HanuntookDavid'sservants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.[x]MKJV: And Hanun took David's servants and shaved off half their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, to their buttocks, and sent them away. 4 So Hanun took David's servants, and after cutting off half the hair on their chins, and cutting off the skirts of their robes up to the middle, he sent them away.

5 When David had news of it, he sent men out with the purpose of meeting them on their way, for the men were greatly shamed: and the king said, Go to Jericho till your hair is long again, and then come back.

And he chose from all the choice ones of Israel, and put [them] in order against the Syrians. BBE: Now when Joab saw that their forces were in position against him in front and at his back, he took the best of the men of Israel and put them in line against the Aramaeans; KAV: 요압이 자기를 치려고 앞뒤에 전투의 최전선이 놓인 것을 보고는 이스라엘의 모든 택한 자들 중에서 택하여 시리아 사람들을 향해 전열을 갖추니라. 10 And the rest of the people he put in position against the children of Ammon, with Abishai, his brother, at their head.

11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.[x]MKJV: And he said, If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me. But if the sons of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. BBE: And he said, If the Aramaeans are stronger and get the better of me, then you are to come to my help; but if the children of Ammon get the better of you, I will come to your help. KAV: 이르되, 만일 시리아 사람들이 나보다 강하면 네가 나를 도우려니와 만일 암몬 자손이 너보다 강하면 내가 가서 너를 도우리라. 12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORDdo that which seemeth him good.[x]MKJV: Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people and for the cities of our God. And may the LORD do that which seems good to Him. BBE: Take heart, and let us be strong for our people and for the towns of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him. 13 And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fledbefore him.[x]MKJV: And Joab and the people with him drew near to the battle against the Syrians. And they fled before him. BBE: Then Joab and the people with him went forward to the fight against the Aramaeans, and they went in flight before him. 13 Then Joab and the people with him went forward to the fight against the Aramaeans, and they went in flight before him.

14 And when the children of Ammonsaw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also beforeAbishai, and entered into the city. And Joab returned from the sons of Ammon and came to Jerusalem. 14 And when the children of Ammon saw the flight of the Aramaeans, they themselves went in flight from Abishai, and came into the town. So Joab went back from fighting the children of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.

15 And when the Syrianssaw that they were smittenbeforeIsrael, they gathered themselves together.[x]MKJV: And the Syrians saw that they were beaten before Israel, and they gathered together. And they came to Helam. And Shobach the commander of the army of Hadarezer went before them. 17 And word of this was given to David: and he got all Israel together and went over Jordan and came to Helam. And the Aramaeans put their forces in position against David, and made an attack on him.

19 And when all the kingsthat wereservants to Hadarezersaw that they were smittenbeforeIsrael, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syriansfeared to help the children of Ammon any more.[x]MKJV: And all the kings, the servants of Hadarezer, saw that they were beaten before Israel, and [they] made peace with Israel and served them. And the Syrians feared to help the sons of Ammon any more. BBE: And when all the kings who were servants of Hadadezer saw that they were overcome by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became their servants. 19 And when all the kings who were servants of Hadadezer saw that they were overcome by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became their servants. So the Aramaeans, in fear, gave no more help to the children of Ammon.
19 하닷에셀에게 속한 왕들이 자기가 이스라엘 앞에서 패함을 보고 이스라엘과 화친하고 섬기니 이러므로 아람 사람들이 두려워하여 다시는 암몬 자손을 돕지 아니하니라
