1 So the men of Kiriath-jearim came and took the ark of the Lord to the house of Abinadab in Gibeah, and they made his son Eleazar holy and put the ark in his care.

2 And it came to pass, while the arkabode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twentyyears: and all the house of Israellamentedafter the LORD.[x]MKJV: And it happened from the day the ark [began] to dwell in Kirjath-jearim, the days became many; yea, they were twenty years. And all the house of Israel yearned after the LORD. BBE: And the ark was in Kiriath-jearim for a long time, as much as twenty years: and all Israel was searching after the Lord with weeping. 2 And the ark was in Kiriath-jearim for a long time, as much as twenty years: and all Israel was searching after the Lord with weeping.

3 And Samuelspake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strangegods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.[x]MKJV: And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel saying, If you return to the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts to the LORD, and serve Him only. 3 Then Samuel said to all Israel, If with all your hearts you would come back to the Lord, then put away all the strange gods and the Astartes from among you, and let your hearts be turned to the Lord, and be servants to him only: and he will make you safe from the hands of the Philistines.

4 Then the children of Israel did put awayBaalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.[x]MKJV: And the sons of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only. BBE: So the children of Israel gave up the worship of Baal and Astarte, and became worshippers of the Lord only. KAV: 이에 이스라엘 자손이 바알들과 아스다롯을 제거하고 {주} 만 섬기니라. 4 So the children of Israel gave up the worship of Baal and Astarte, and became worshippers of the Lord only.

BBE: Then Samuel said, Let all Israel come to Mizpah and I will make prayer to the Lord for you. 6 And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drewwater, and poured itoutbefore the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. 7 And when the Philistinesheard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israelheardit, they were afraidof the Philistines.[x]MKJV: And the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel had come together to Mizpeh. And the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And the sons of Israel heard, and they were afraid of the Philistines. And the children of Israel, hearing of it, were full of fear. 7 Now when the Philistines had news that the children of Israel had come together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And the children of Israel, hearing of it, were full of fear.

8 And the children of Israelsaid to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.[x]MKJV: And the sons of Israel said to Samuel, Do not cease from crying to the LORD our God for us, so that He will save us out of the hand of the Philistines. BBE: And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Go on crying to the Lord our God for us to make us safe from the hands of the Philistines. 8 And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Go on crying to the Lord our God for us to make us safe from the hands of the Philistines.

9 And Samueltookasuckinglamb, and offeredit for a burnt offeringwholly unto the LORD: and Samuelcried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORDheard him.[x]MKJV: And Samuel took a suckling lamb, and offered a whole burnt offering to the LORD. And Samuel cried to the LORD for Israel, and the LORD answered him. BBE: And Samuel took a young lamb, offering all of it as a burned offering to the Lord; and Samuel made prayers to the Lord for Israel and the Lord gave him an answer. 9 사무엘이 젖 먹는 어린 양을 취하여 온전한 번제를 여호와께 드리고 이스라엘을 위하여 여호와께 부르짖으매 여호와께서 응답하셨더라
10 And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORDthundered with a greatthunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smittenbeforeIsrael.[x]MKJV: And it happened [as] Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. But the LORD thundered with a great noise on that day on the Philistines, and troubled them. And they were beaten before Israel. BBE: And while Samuel was offering the burned offering, the Philistines came near for the attack on Israel; but at the thunder of the Lord's voice that day the Philistines were overcome with fear, and they gave way before Israel. 10 사무엘이 번제를 드릴 때에 블레셋 사람이 이스라엘과 싸우려고 가까이 오매 그 날에 여호와께서 블레셋 사람에게 큰 우뢰를 발하여 그들을 어지럽게 하시니 그들이 이스라엘 앞에 패한지라
11 And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar.[x]MKJV: And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and struck them as far as below Beth-car. BBE: Then Samuel took a stone and put it up between Mizpah and Jeshanah, naming it Eben-ezer, and saying, Up to now the Lord has been our help. 13 So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.[x]MKJV: And the Philistines were beaten, and they did not come any more into the border of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. BBE: So the Philistines were overcome, and did not come into the country of Israel again: and all the days of Samuel the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines. 14 And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israeldeliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And Israel delivered its borders out of the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
