1 Now the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines for seven months.

2 And the Philistinescalled for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.[x]MKJV: And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? BBE: And the Philistines sent for the priests and those who were wise in secret arts, and said to them, What are we to do with the ark of the Lord? How are we to send it away to its place? 2 And the Philistines sent for the priests and those who were wise in secret arts, and said to them, What are we to do with the ark of the Lord? How are we to send it away to its place?

3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wisereturn him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.[x]MKJV: And they said, If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it empty. For you shall certainly send a guilt offering to him. Then you shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why His hand is not removed from you. BBE: And they said, If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it without an offering, but send him a sin-offering with it: then you will have peace again, and it will be clear to you why the weight of his hand has not been lifted from you. 4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Fivegoldenemerodsㆍ, and fivegoldenmice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for oneplaguewas on you all, and on your lords.[x]MKJV: And they said, What [shall be] the guilt offering which we shall return to Him? And they answered, Five golden hemorrhoids, and five golden mice, for the number of the lords of the Philistines. For one plague [was] on you all, and on your lords. BBE: Then they said, What sin-offering are we to send to him? And they said, Five gold images of the growths caused by your disease and five gold mice, one for every lord of the Philistines: for the same disease came on you and on your lords. 4 Then they said, What sin-offering are we to send to him? And they said, Five gold images of the growths caused by your disease and five gold mice, one for every lord of the Philistines: for the same disease came on you and on your lords.
4 그들이 가로되 무엇으로 그에게 드릴 속건제를 삼을꼬 가로되 블레셋 사람의 방백의 수효대로 금독종 다섯과 금쥐 다섯이라야 하리니 너희와 너희 방백에게 내린 재앙이 일반임이니라
5 Wherefore ye shall makeimages of your emerodsㆍ, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall giveglory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.[x]MKJV: And you shall make images of your hemorrhoids, and images of your mice which mar the land. And you shall give glory to the God of Israel. Perhaps He will lighten His hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land. BBE: So make images of the growths caused by your disease and of the mice which are damaging your land; and give glory to the God of Israel: it may be that the weight of his hand will be lifted from you and from your gods and from your land. 5 So make images of the growths caused by your disease and of the mice which are damaging your land; and give glory to the God of Israel: it may be that the weight of his hand will be lifted from you and from your gods and from your land.

6 Why do you make your hearts hard, like the hearts of Pharaoh and the Egyptians? When he had made sport of them, did they not let the people go, and they went away?

7 Now therefore makeanewcart, and taketwomilchkine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calveshome from them:[x]MKJV: And now make a new cart, and take two milk cows on which there has come no yoke, and tie the cows to the cart, and bring their calves home from them. BBE: So now, take and make ready a new cart, and two cows which have never come under the yoke, and have the cows yoked to the cart, and take their young ones away from them: KAV: 그러므로 이제 새 수레를 만들고 멍에를 멘 적이 없는 젖내는 암소 두 마리를 끌어다가 수레에 묶고 그것들의 송아지들은 암소들로부터 떼 내어 집으로 보내라. 7 So now, take and make ready a new cart, and two cows which have never come under the yoke, and have the cows yoked to the cart, and take their young ones away from them:

8 And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.[x]MKJV: And take the ark of the LORD and lay it on the cart. And put the jewels of gold which you return to Him [for] a trespass offering in a box in its side. And send it away so that it may go. BBE: And put the ark of the Lord on the cart, and the gold images which you are sending as a sin-offering in a chest by its side; and send it away so that it may go. 8 And put the ark of the Lord on the cart, and the gold images which you are sending as a sin-offering in a chest by its side; and send it away so that it may go.
8 여호와의 궤를 가져다가 수레에 싣고 속건제 드릴 금 보물은 상자에 담아 궤 곁에 두고 그것을 보내어 가게하고
9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this greatevil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his handthatsmote us: it was a chancethat happened to us.[x]MKJV: And watch. If it goes up by the way of its own border to Beth-shemesh, He has done us this great evil. But if not, then we shall know that [it is] not His hand that struck us. It was a chance that happened to us. BBE: If it goes by the land of Israel to Beth-shemesh, then this great evil is his work; but if not, then we may be certain that the evil was not his doing, but was the working of chance. 9 If it goes by the land of Israel to Beth-shemesh, then this great evil is his work; but if not, then we may be certain that the evil was not his doing, but was the working of chance.
9 보아서 궤가 그 본 지경길로 올라가서 벧세메스로 가면 이 큰 재앙은 그가 우리에게 내린 것이요 그렇지 아니하면 우리를 친 것이 그 손이 아니요 우연히 만난 것인줄 알리라
10 And the men did so; and tooktwomilchkine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:[x]MKJV: And the men did so. And they took two milk cows and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home. 11 And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.[x]MKJV: And they laid the ark of the LORD on the cart, and the box [with] the mice of gold and the images of their hemorrhoids. 12 And the kine took the straightway to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highwayㆍ, lowing as they went, and turned not asideto the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistineswentafter them unto the border of Bethshemesh.[x]MKJV: And the cows took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, going along the highway, lowing as they went. And they did not turn aside [to] the right or to the left. And the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth-shemesh. BBE: And the cows took the straight way, by the road to Beth-shemesh; they went by the highway, not turning to the right or to the left, and the sound of their voices was clear on the road; and the lords of the Philistines went after them as far as the edge of Beth-shemesh. 12 And the cows took the straight way, by the road to Beth-shemesh; they went by the highway, not turning to the right or to the left, and the sound of their voices was clear on the road; and the lords of the Philistines went after them as far as the edge of Beth-shemesh.
12 암소가 벧세메스 길로 바로 행하여 대로로 가며 갈 때에 울고 좌우로 치우치지 아니하였고 블레셋 방백들은 벧세메스 경계까지 따라 가니라
13 And they ofBethshemeshwerereaping their wheatharvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to seeit.[x]MKJV: And [the people] of Beth-shemesh [were] reaping their wheat harvest in the valley. And they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see [it]. BBE: And the people of Beth-shemesh were cutting their grain in the valley, and lifting up their eyes they saw the ark and were full of joy when they saw it. 14 And the cartcame into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a greatstone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.[x]MKJV: And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there and there was a great stone. And they cut the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD. BBE: And the cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite, and came to a stop there by a great stone: and cutting up the wood of the cart they made a burned offering of the cows to the Lord. 15 And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of goldwere, and putthem on the greatstone: and the men of Bethshemeshoffered burnt offerings and sacrificedsacrifices the same day unto the LORD.[x]MKJV: And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the box in it, in which the jewels of gold were, and put [them] on the great stone. And the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day to the LORD. BBE: Then the Levites took down the ark of the Lord and the chest in which were the gold images, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh made burned offerings and gave worship that day before the Lord. 18 And the goldenmice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistinesbelonging to the fivelords, both of fencedcities, and of countryvillages, even unto the greatstone ofAbel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Bethshemite.[x]MKJV: And the golden mice were [according to] the number of all the cities of the Philistines for the five lords, of fortified cities and of country villages, even to the great meadow on which they set down the ark of the LORD to this day, in the field of Joshua the Bethshemite. BBE: And the gold mice, one for every town of the Philistines, the property of the five lords, walled towns as well as country places: and the great stone where they put the ark of the Lord is still in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite to this day. 18 And the gold mice, one for every town of the Philistines, the property of the five lords, walled towns as well as country places: and the great stone where they put the ark of the Lord is still in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite to this day.
18 드린바 금쥐는 여호와의 궤를 놓은 큰 돌에 이르기까지의 모든 견고한 성읍과 시골 동리 곧 다섯 방백에게 속한 사람의 모든 성읍의 수효대로였더라 그 돌은 벧세메스 사람 여호수아의 밭에 오늘까지 있더라
19 And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the peoplefiftythousand and threescore and tenmen: and the peoplelamented, because the LORD had smittenmany of the people with a greatslaughter.[x]MKJV: And He struck the men of Beth-shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the LORD. He even struck seventy among the people, [including] fifty chief men. And the people lamented because the LORD had struck the people with a great slaughter. BBE: But the Lord sent destruction on seventy men of the people of Beth-shemesh for looking into the ark of the Lord; and great was the sorrow of the people for the destruction which the Lord had sent on them. 20 And the men of Bethshemeshsaid, Who is able to standbefore this holyLORDGod? and to whom shall he go up from us?[x]MKJV: And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? And to whom shall He go up from us? BBE: And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to keep his place before the Lord, this holy God? and to whom may he go from us? KAV: 벧세메스 사람들이 이르되, 이 거룩하신 {주} [하나님] 앞에 누가 능히 서리요? 그분께서 우리를 떠나 누구에게로 가실까? 하더라. 21 And they sentmessengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.[x]MKJV: And they sent messengers to the people of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD. Come down [and] bring it up to yourselves. BBE: And they sent men to the people living in Kiriath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have sent back the ark of the Lord; come and take it up to your country.
