1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.1 Now at that time the Philistines came together to make war against Israel, and the men of Israel went out to war against the Philistines and took up their position at the side of Eben-ezer: and the Philistines put their forces in position in Aphek.1 사무엘의 말이 온 이스라엘에 전파되니라 이스라엘은 나가서 블레셋 사람과 싸우려고 에벤에셀 곁에 진 치고 블레셋 사람은 아벡에 진 쳤더니
2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.2 And the Philistines put their forces in order against Israel, and the fighting was hard, and Israel was overcome by the Philistines, who put to the sword about four thousand of their army in the field.2 이스라엘을 대하여 항오를 벌이니라 그 둘이 싸우다가 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람 앞에서 패하여 그들에게 전쟁에서 죽임을 당한 군사가 사천명 가량이라
3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.3 And when the people came back to their tents, the responsible men of Israel said, Why has the Lord let the Philistines overcome us today? Let us get the ark of the Lord's agreement here from Shiloh, so that it may be with us and give us salvation from the hands of those who are against us.3 백성이 진으로 돌아오매 이스라엘 장로들이 가로되 여호와께서 어찌하여 우리로 오늘 블레셋 사람 앞에 패하게 하셨는고 여호와의 언약궤를 실로에서 우리에게로 가져다가 우리 중에 있게 하여 그것으로 우리를 우리 원수들의 손에서 구원하게 하자 하니
4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.4 So the people sent to Shiloh and got the ark of the agreement of the Lord of armies whose resting-place is between the winged ones; and Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were there with the ark of God's agreement.4 이에 백성이 실로에 보내어 그룹 사이에 계신 만군의 여호와의 언약궤를 거기서 가져왔고 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스는 하나님의 언약궤와 함께 거기 있었더라
5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.5 And when the ark of the Lord's agreement came into the tent-circle, all Israel gave a great cry, so that the earth was sounding with it.5 여호와의 언약궤가 진에 들어올 때에 온 이스라엘이 큰 소리로 외치매 땅이 울린지라
6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.6 And the Philistines, hearing the noise of their cry, said, What is this great cry among the tents of the Hebrews? Then it became clear to them that the ark of the Lord had come to the tent-circle.6 블레셋 사람이 그 외치는 소리를 듣고 가로되 히브리 진에서 큰 소리로 외침은 어찜이뇨 하다가 여호와의 궤가 진에 들어온 줄을 깨달은지라
7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.7 And the Philistines, full of fear, said, God has come into their tents. And they said, Trouble is ours! for never before has such a thing been seen.7 블레셋 사람이 두려워하여 가로되 신이 진에 이르렀도다 하고 또 가로되 우리에게 화로다 전일에는 이런 일이 없었도다
8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.8 Trouble is ours! Who will give us salvation from the hands of these great gods? These are the gods who sent all sorts of blows on the Egyptians in the waste land.8 우리에게 화로다 누가 우리를 이 능한 신들의 손에서 건지리요 그들은 광야에서 여러가지 재앙으로 애굽인을 친 신들이니라
9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.9 Be strong, O Philistines, be men! Do not be servants to the Hebrews as they have been to you: go forward to the fight without fear.9 너희 블레셋 사람들아 강하게 되며 대장부가 되어라 너희가 히브리 사람의 종이 되기를 그들이 너희의 종이 되었던것 같이 말고 대장부 같이 되어 싸우라 하고
10 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.10 So the Philistines went to the fight, and Israel was overcome, and every man went in flight to his tent: and great was the destruction, for thirty thousand footmen of Israel were put to the sword.10 블레셋 사람이 쳤더니 이스라엘이 패하여 각기 장막으로 도망하였고 살륙이 심히 커서 이스라엘 보병의 엎드러진 자가 삼만이었으며
11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.11 And the ark of God was taken; and Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of Eli, were put to the sword.11 하나님의 궤는 빼앗겼고 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스는 죽임을 당하였더라
12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.12 And a man of Benjamin went running from the fight and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothing out of order and earth on his head.12 당일에 어떤 베냐민 사람이 진에서 달려나와 그 옷을 찢고 그 머리에 티끌을 무릅쓰고 실로에 이르니라
13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside ㆍ ㆍ watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.13 And when he came, Eli was seated by the wayside watching: and in his heart was fear for the ark of God. And when the man came into the town and gave the news, there was a great outcry.13 그가 이를 때는 엘리가 길 곁 자기 의자에 앉아 기다리며 그 마음이 여호와의 궤로 인하여 떨릴 즈음이라 그 사람이 성에 들어오며 고하매 온 성이 부르짖는지라
14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.14 And Eli, hearing the noise and the cries, said, What is the reason of this outcry? And the man came quickly and gave the news to Eli.14 엘리가 그 부르짖는 소리를 듣고 가로되 이 훤화하는 소리는 어찜이뇨 그 사람이 빨리 와서 엘리에게 고하니
15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were fixed so that he was not able to see.15 때에 엘리의 나이 구십 팔이라 그 눈이 어두워서 보지 못하더라
16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?16 And the man said to Eli, I have come from the army and have come in flight today from the fight. And he said, How did it go, my son?16 그 사람이 엘리에게 고하되 나는 진중에서 나온 자라 내가 오늘 진중에서 도망하여 왔나이다 엘리가 가로되 내 아들아 일이 어찌 되었느냐
17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.17 And the man said, Israel went in flight from the Philistines, and there has been great destruction among the people, and your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been taken.17 소식을 전하는 자가 대답하여 가로되 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람 앞에서 도망하였고 백성 중에는 큰 살륙이 있었고 당신의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 죽임을 당하였고 하나님의 궤는 빼앗겼나이다
18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.18 And at these words about the ark of God, Eli, falling back off his seat by the side of the doorway into the town, came down on the earth so that his neck was broken and death overtook him, for he was an old man and of great weight. He had been judging Israel for forty years.18 하나님의 궤를 말할 때에 엘리가 자기 의자에서 자빠져 문 곁에서 목이 부러져 죽었으니 나이 많고 비둔한 연고라 그가 이스라엘 사사가 된지 사십년이었더라
19 And his daughter in law, Phinehas wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.19 And his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child and near the time when she would give birth; and when she had the news that the ark of God had been taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, her pains came on her suddenly and she gave birth.19 그의 며느리 비느하스의 아내가 잉태하여 산기가 가까왔더니 하나님의 궤 빼앗긴 것과 그 시부와 남편의 죽은 소문을 듣고 갑자기 아파서 몸을 구푸려 해산하고
20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast borne a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard ㆍ it.20 And when she was very near death the women who were with her said, Have no fear, for you have given birth to a son. But she made no answer and gave no attention to it.20 죽어갈 때에 곁에 섰던 여인들이 그에게 이르되 두려워 말라 네가 아들을 낳았다 하되 그가 대답지도 아니하며 관념치도 아니하고
21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.21 And she gave the child the name of Ichabod, saying, The glory has gone from Israel: because the ark of God was taken and because of her father-in-law and her husband.21 이르기를 영광이 이스라엘에서 떠났다 하고 아이 이름을 이가봇이라 하였으니 하나님의 궤가 빼앗겼고 그 시부와 남편이 죽었음을 인함이며
22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.22 And she said, The glory is gone from Israel, for the ark of God has been taken.22 또 이르기를 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼으므로 영광이 이스라엘에서 떠났다 하였더라
