1 Now at that time the Philistines came together to make war against Israel, and the men of Israel went out to war against the Philistines and took up their position at the side of Eben-ezer: and the Philistines put their forces in position in Aphek.

2 And the Philistines put themselves in arrayagainstIsrael: and when they joinedbattle, Israel was smittenbefore the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about fourthousandmen.[x]MKJV: And the Philistines put themselves in order against Israel. And the battle was joined. And Israel was beaten before the Philistines. And they killed about four thousand men of the army in the field. 2 And the Philistines put their forces in order against Israel, and the fighting was hard, and Israel was overcome by the Philistines, who put to the sword about four thousand of their army in the field.
2 이스라엘을 대하여 항오를 벌이니라 그 둘이 싸우다가 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람 앞에서 패하여 그들에게 전쟁에서 죽임을 당한 군사가 사천명 가량이라
3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israelsaid, Wherefore hath the LORDsmitten us to daybefore the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it comethamong us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.[x]MKJV: And when the people had come to the camp, the elders of Israel said, Why has the LORD beaten us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh to us, so that when it comes among us it may save us out of the hand of our enemies. BBE: And when the people came back to their tents, the responsible men of Israel said, Why has the Lord let the Philistines overcome us today? Let us get the ark of the Lord's agreement here from Shiloh, so that it may be with us and give us salvation from the hands of those who are against us. 3 And when the people came back to their tents, the responsible men of Israel said, Why has the Lord let the Philistines overcome us today? Let us get the ark of the Lord's agreement here from Shiloh, so that it may be with us and give us salvation from the hands of those who are against us.
3 백성이 진으로 돌아오매 이스라엘 장로들이 가로되 여호와께서 어찌하여 우리로 오늘 블레셋 사람 앞에 패하게 하셨는고 여호와의 언약궤를 실로에서 우리에게로 가져다가 우리 중에 있게 하여 그것으로 우리를 우리 원수들의 손에서 구원하게 하자 하니
4 So the peoplesent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwellethbetween the cherubims: and the twosons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.[x]MKJV: And the people sent to Shiloh in order to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts from there, [the ark] which dwells [between] the cherubs. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 6 And when the Philistinesheard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this greatshout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.[x]MKJV: And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What is the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they saw that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp. BBE: And the Philistines, hearing the noise of their cry, said, What is this great cry among the tents of the Hebrews? 6 And the Philistines, hearing the noise of their cry, said, What is this great cry among the tents of the Hebrews? Then it became clear to them that the ark of the Lord had come to the tent-circle.
6 블레셋 사람이 그 외치는 소리를 듣고 가로되 히브리 진에서 큰 소리로 외침은 어찜이뇨 하다가 여호와의 궤가 진에 들어온 줄을 깨달은지라
7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.[x]MKJV: And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God has come into the camp, And they said, Woe to us! For there has not been a thing like this before. BBE: And the Philistines, full of fear, said, God has come into their tents. And they said, Trouble is ours! for never before has such a thing been seen. KAV: 블레셋 사람들이 이르기를, [하나님]이 진영에 이르렀도다, 하며 두려워하였더라. 또 지금까지 그런 일이 없었으므로 그들이 이르기를, 우리에게 화가 있으리로다! 하였더라. 7 And the Philistines, full of fear, said, God has come into their tents. And they said, Trouble is ours! for never before has such a thing been seen.
7 블레셋 사람이 두려워하여 가로되 신이 진에 이르렀도다 하고 또 가로되 우리에게 화로다 전일에는 이런 일이 없었도다
8Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mightyGods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.[x]MKJV: Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These [are] the gods that struck the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. BBE: Trouble is ours! Who will give us salvation from the hands of these great gods? These are the gods who sent all sorts of blows on the Egyptians in the waste land. 8 Trouble is ours! Who will give us salvation from the hands of these great gods? These are the gods who sent all sorts of blows on the Egyptians in the waste land.
8 우리에게 화로다 누가 우리를 이 능한 신들의 손에서 건지리요 그들은 광야에서 여러가지 재앙으로 애굽인을 친 신들이니라
9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.[x]MKJV: Be strong and fight like men, O, Philistines, so that you may not be servants to the Hebrews, [as] they have been to you. Be men and fight! BBE: Be strong, O Philistines, be men! Do not be servants to the Hebrews as they have been to you: go forward to the fight without fear. 10 And the Philistinesfought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a verygreatslaughter; for there fell of Israelthirtythousandfootmen.[x]MKJV: And the Philistines fought, and Israel was beaten, and each one of them fled into his tent. And there was a very great slaughter, for there fell thirty thousand footmen of Israel. BBE: So the Philistines went to the fight, and Israel was overcome, and every man went in flight to his tent: and great was the destruction, for thirty thousand footmen of Israel were put to the sword. 11 And the ark of God was taken; and the twosons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.[x]MKJV: And the ark of God was taken. And Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were slain. 12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothesrent, and with earth upon his head.[x]MKJV: And a man of Benjamin ran out of the army. And he came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes torn and with earth upon his head. BBE: And a man of Benjamin went running from the fight and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothing out of order and earth on his head. 12 And a man of Benjamin went running from the fight and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothing out of order and earth on his head.

13 And when he came, lo, Elisat upon a seat by the waysideㆍㆍwatching: for his hearttrembled for the ark of God. And when the mancame into the city, and toldit, all the city cried out.[x]MKJV: And he came in, and behold, Eli sat on a seat by the wayside watching. For his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told [it], all the city cried out. BBE: And when he came, Eli was seated by the wayside watching: and in his heart was fear for the ark of God. And when the man came into the town and gave the news, there was a great outcry. 14 And when Eliheard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the mancame in hastily, and toldEli.[x]MKJV: And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What [is] the noise of this tumult? And the man hurried in and told Eli. BBE: And Eli, hearing the noise and the cries, said, What is the reason of this outcry? And the man came quickly and gave the news to Eli. 14 And Eli, hearing the noise and the cries, said, What is the reason of this outcry? And the man came quickly and gave the news to Eli.
14 엘리가 그 부르짖는 소리를 듣고 가로되 이 훤화하는 소리는 어찜이뇨 그 사람이 빨리 와서 엘리에게 고하니
15 Now Eli was ninety and eightyearsold; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.[x]MKJV: And Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were set so that he could not see. 16 And the mansaid unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. BBE: And the man said to Eli, I have come from the army and have come in flight today from the fight. And he said, How did it go, my son? 16 And the man said to Eli, I have come from the army and have come in flight today from the fight. And he said, How did it go, my son?

17 And the man said, Israel went in flight from the Philistines, and there has been great destruction among the people, and your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been taken.
17 소식을 전하는 자가 대답하여 가로되 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람 앞에서 도망하였고 백성 중에는 큰 살륙이 있었고 당신의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 죽임을 당하였고 하나님의 궤는 빼앗겼나이다
18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seatbackwardby the side of the gate, and his neckbrake, and he died: for he was an oldman, and heavy. And he had judgedIsraelfortyyears.[x]MKJV: And it happened when he spoke of the ark of God, he fell backward off the seat, by the side of the gate. And his neck broke, and he died, for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years. BBE: And at these words about the ark of God, Eli, falling back off his seat by the side of the doorway into the town, came down on the earth so that his neck was broken and death overtook him, for he was an old man and of great weight. 19 And his daughter in law, Phinehaswife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidingsthat the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her painscame upon her.[x]MKJV: And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, ready to be delivered. And when she heard the report that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed, for her pains came upon her. BBE: And his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child and near the time when she would give birth; and when she had the news that the ark of God had been taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, her pains came on her suddenly and she gave birth. 19 And his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child and near the time when she would give birth; and when she had the news that the ark of God had been taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, her pains came on her suddenly and she gave birth.
19 그의 며느리 비느하스의 아내가 잉태하여 산기가 가까왔더니 하나님의 궤 빼앗긴 것과 그 시부와 남편의 죽은 소문을 듣고 갑자기 아파서 몸을 구푸려 해산하고
20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast borne a son. But she answered not, neither did she regardㆍit.[x]MKJV: And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said to her, Do not fear, for you have borne a son. But she did not answer, nor set her heart. BBE: And when she was very near death the women who were with her said, Have no fear, for you have given birth to a son. But she made no answer and gave no attention to it. 20 And when she was very near death the women who were with her said, Have no fear, for you have given birth to a son. But she made no answer and gave no attention to it.

21 And she named the childIchabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.[x]MKJV: And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory has departed from Israel, because the ark of God had been taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
