1 Now when Saul came back from fighting the Philistines, news was given him that David was in the waste land of En-gedi.

2 Then Saul took three thousand of the best men out of all Israel, and went in search of David and his men on the rocks of the mountain goats.

3 And he came to the sheepcotesby the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his menremained in the sides of the cave.[x]MKJV: And he came to the folds of the flock on the way, where there [was] a cave. And Saul went in to cover his feet. And David and his men remained in the sides of the cave. BBE: And on the way he came to a place where sheep were kept, where there was a hollow in the rock; and Saul went in for a private purpose. 3 And on the way he came to a place where sheep were kept, where there was a hollow in the rock; and Saul went in for a private purpose. Now David and his men were in the deepest part of the hollow.
3 길 가 양의 우리에 이른즉 굴이 있는지라 사울이 그 발을 가리우러 들어가니라 다윗과 그의 사람들이 그 굴 깊은 곳에 있더니
4 And the men of Davidsaid unto him, Behold the day of which the LORDsaid unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then Davidarose, and cut off the skirt of Saul'srobeprivily.[x]MKJV: And the men of David said to him, Behold, this is the day of which the LORD said to you, Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand so that you may do to him as it shall seem good to you. And David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe secretly. BBE: And David's men said to him, Now is the time when the Lord says to you, I will give up your hater into your hands to do with him whatever seems good to you. Then David, getting up, took the skirt of Saul's robe in his hand, cutting off the end of it without his knowledge. 4 And David's men said to him, Now is the time when the Lord says to you, I will give up your hater into your hands to do with him whatever seems good to you. Then David, getting up, took the skirt of Saul's robe in his hand, cutting off the end of it without his knowledge.
4 다윗의 사람들이 가로되 보소서 여호와께서 당신에게 이르시기를 내가 원수를 네 손에 붙이리니 네 소견에 선한대로 그에게 행하라 하시더니 이것이 그 날이니이다 다윗이 일어나서 사울의 겉옷자락을 가만히 베니라
5 And it came to pass afterward, that David'sheartsmote him, because he had cut offSaul'sskirt.[x]MKJV: And it happened afterward David's heart struck him because he had cut off Saul's skirt. 5 And later, David was full of regret for cutting off Saul's skirt.
5 그리한 후에 사울의 옷자락 벰을 인하여 다윗의 마음이 찔려
6 And he said unto his men, The LORDforbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD'Sanointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.[x]MKJV: And he said to his men, Far be it from me, by the LORD, if I will do this thing to my lord, the LORD's anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, since he is the anointed of the LORD. BBE: And David said to his men, Before the Lord, never let it be said that my hand was lifted up against my lord, the man of the Lord's selection, for the Lord's holy oil has been put on him. 6 And David said to his men, Before the Lord, never let it be said that my hand was lifted up against my lord, the man of the Lord's selection, for the Lord's holy oil has been put on him.
6 자기 사람들에게 이르되 내가 손을 들어 여호와의 기름 부음을 받은 내 주를 치는 것은 여호와의 금하시는 것이니 그는 여호와의 기름 부음을 받은 자가 됨이니라 하고
7 So Davidstayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on hisway.[x]MKJV: And David held back his men with words, and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave and went on [his] way. BBE: So with these words David kept his servants back, and did not let them make an attack on Saul. And Saul got up and went on his way. 7 So with these words David kept his servants back, and did not let them make an attack on Saul. And Saul got up and went on his way.

8David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and criedafterSaul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saullookedbehind him, Davidstooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.[x]MKJV: And David arose afterward and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king! And Saul looked behind him. And David bowed his face to the earth and prostrated himself. BBE: And after that David came out of the hollow rock, and crying after Saul said, My lord the king. 8 And after that David came out of the hollow rock, and crying after Saul said, My lord the king. And when Saul gave a look back, David went down on his face and gave him honour.
8 그 후에 다윗도 일어나 굴에서 나가 사울의 뒤에서 외쳐 가로되 내 주 왕이여 하매 사울이 돌아보는지라 다윗이 땅에 엎드려 절하고
9 And Davidsaid to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men'swords, saying, Behold, Davidseeketh thy hurt?[x]MKJV: And David said to Saul, Why do you hear man's words, saying, Behold, David seeks to do you evil? BBE: And David said to Saul, Why do you give any attention to those who say that it is my desire to do you wrong? KAV: ¶ 다윗이 사울에게 이르되, 어찌하여 왕께서는, 보소서, 다윗이 왕을 해치려 하나이다, 하는 사람들의 말을 들으시나이까? 9 And David said to Saul, Why do you give any attention to those who say that it is my desire to do you wrong?

10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and somebademekill thee: but mine eyespared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'Sanointed.[x]MKJV: Behold, your eyes have seen today how the LORD had delivered you today into my hand in the cave. And [one] said to kill you. But [I] had pity on you. And I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD's anointed. BBE: Look! you have seen today how the Lord gave you up into my hands even now in the hollow of the rocks: and some would have had me put you to death, but I had pity on you: for I said, Never will my hand be lifted up against my lord, who has been marked with the holy oil. KAV: 보소서, 오늘 {주}께서 왕을 굴에서 내 손에 넘겨주신 것을 이 날 왕의 눈이 보셨나이다. 몇 사람이 내게 권하여 왕을 죽이게 하였으나 내 눈이 왕을 아끼어 내가 말하기를, 나는 내 손을 들어 내 주(主)를 치지 아니하리니 그는 {주}의 기름 부음 받은 자니라, 하였나이다. 10 Look! you have seen today how the Lord gave you up into my hands even now in the hollow of the rocks: and some would have had me put you to death, but I had pity on you: for I said, Never will my hand be lifted up against my lord, who has been marked with the holy oil.
10 오늘 여호와께서 굴에서 왕을 내 손에 붙이신 것을 왕이 아셨을 것이니이다 혹이 나를 권하여 왕을 죽이라 하였으나 내가 왕을 아껴 말하기를 나는 내 손을 들어 내 주를 해치 아니하리니 그는 여호와의 기름 부음을 받은 자가 됨이니라 하였나이다
11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.[x]MKJV: And, my father, behold! Yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand. For in that I cut off the skirt of your robe and did not kill you, know and see that [there is] neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against you. Yet you hunt my soul to take it. BBE: And see, my father, see the skirt of your robe in my hand: for the fact that I took off the skirt of your robe and did not put you to death is witness that I have no evil purpose, and I have done you no wrong, though you are waiting for my life to take it. 12 The LORDjudge between me and thee, and the LORDavenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.[x]MKJV: May the LORD judge between me and you, and may the LORD avenge me of you. But my hand shall not be on you. BBE: May the Lord be judge between me and you, and may the Lord give me my rights against you, but my hand will never be lifted up against you. 16 And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saulsaid, Is this thy voice, my sonDavid? 16 Now when David had said these words to Saul, Saul said, Is this your voice, David, my son? And Saul was overcome with weeping.

17 And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.[x]MKJV: And he said to David, You [are] more righteous than I, for you have rewarded me with good, but I have rewarded you evil. 17 And he said to David, You are right and I am wrong: for you have given me back good, but I have given you evil.

18 And thou hast showed this day how that thou hast dealtwell with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.[x]MKJV: And you have shown this day how you have dealt well with me, because when the LORD shut me up into your hand, you did not kill me. BBE: And you have made clear to me how good you have been to me today: because, when the Lord gave me up into your hands, you did not put me to death. 18 And you have made clear to me how good you have been to me today: because, when the Lord gave me up into your hands, you did not put me to death.

19 For if a manfind his enemy, will he let him gowellaway? wherefore the LORDreward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.[x]MKJV: For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go completely away? And may the LORD reward good for what you have done to me this day. BBE: If a man comes across his hater, will he let him get away safe? so may you be rewarded by the Lord for what you have done for me today. 19 If a man comes across his hater, will he let him get away safe? so may you be rewarded by the Lord for what you have done for me today.
19 사람이 그 원수를 만나면 그를 평안히 가게 하겠느냐 네가 오늘날 내게 행한 일을 인하여 여호와께서 네게 선으로 갚으시기를 원하노라
20 And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.[x]MKJV: And now, behold, I know well that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall he established in your hand. BBE: And now I am certain that you will be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be made strong under your authority. KAV: 이제, 보라, 나는 네가 반드시 왕이 될 것을 잘 알고 이스라엘 왕국이 네 손에서 견고히 설 것을 잘 아노라. 20 And now I am certain that you will be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be made strong under your authority.

21Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seedafter me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father'shouse.[x]MKJV: And swear therefore to me before the LORD that you will not cut off my seed after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father's house. BBE: So give me your oath by the Lord, that you will not put an end to my seed after me or let my name be cut off from my father's family. 21 So give me your oath by the Lord, that you will not put an end to my seed after me or let my name be cut off from my father's family.

22 And Davidsware unto Saul. And Saulwenthome; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.[x]MKJV: And David swore to Saul. And Saul went home, but David and his men went up into the hold.
