1 Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saulsaid unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistinesgarrison, that is on the other sideㆍ. 1 Now one day Jonathan, the son of Saul, said to the young man who was with him, looking after his arms, Come, let us go over to the Philistine force over there. But he said nothing to his father.

2 And Saultarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about sixhundredmen;[x]MKJV: And Saul stayed in the edge of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree in Migron. And the people who were with him were about six hundred men. 2 And Saul was still waiting in the farthest part of Geba, under the fruit-tree in Migron: there were about six hundred men with him;

4 And between the passages, by which Jonathansought to go over unto the Philistinesgarrison, there was a sharprock on the one side, and a sharprock on the other side: and the name of the onewasBozez, and the name of the otherSeneh.[x]MKJV: And between the passages by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines' garrison [there was] a rocky crag on the one [side] and a rocky crag on the other [side]. And the name of the one [was] Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. 5 The one rock went up on the north in front of Michmash and the other on the south in front of Geba.

6 And Jonathansaid to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.[x]MKJV: And Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised ones. It may be that the LORD will work for us. For [there is] no restraint to the LORD, to save by many or by few. BBE: And Jonathan said to his young servant who had his arms, Come, let us go over to the armies of these men who have no circumcision: it may be that the Lord will give us help, for there is no limit to his power; the Lord is able to give salvation by a great army or by a small band. 7 And his armourbearerㆍsaid unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.[x]MKJV: And his armor-bearer said to him, Do all that [is] in your heart. Turn, for behold, I am with you according to your heart. BBE: And his servant said to him, Do whatever is in your mind: see, I am with you in every impulse of your heart. 7 And his servant said to him, Do whatever is in your mind: see, I am with you in every impulse of your heart.

9 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.[x]MKJV: If they say this to us, Stand still until we come to you, then we will stand still [in] our place and will not go up to them. BBE: If they say to us, Keep quiet where you are till we come to you; then we will keep our places and not go up to them. 9 If they say to us, Keep quiet where you are till we come to you; then we will keep our places and not go up to them.

10 But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.[x]MKJV: But if they say this, Come up to us, then we will go up, for the LORD has delivered them up into our hand. And this [shall be] a sign to us. BBE: But if they say, Come up to us; then we will go up, for the Lord has given them into our hands: and this will be the sign to us. 10 But if they say, Come up to us; then we will go up, for the Lord has given them into our hands: and this will be the sign to us.
10 그들이 만일 이같이 말하기를 우리에게로 올라오라 하면 우리가 올라갈 것은 여호와께서 그들을 우리 손에 붙이셨음이니 이것이 우리에게 표징이 되리라 하고
11 And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistinessaid, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.[x]MKJV: And both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come out of the holes where they have hidden themselves. BBE: And they let the Philistine force see the two of them: and the Philistines said, Look! the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have taken cover. 11 And they let the Philistine force see the two of them: and the Philistines said, Look! the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have taken cover.

12 And the men of the garrisonansweredJonathan and his armourbearerㆍ, and said, Come up to us, and we will show you a thing. And Jonathansaid unto his armourbearerㆍ, Come upafter me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.[x]MKJV: And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor-bearer and said, Come up to us, and we will teach you a thing. And Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, Come up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel. BBE: And the armed men of the force gave Jonathan and his servant their answer, saying, Come up here to us, and we will let you see something. Then Jonathan said to his servant, Come up after me: for the Lord has given them up into the hands of Israel. 12 그 부대 사람들이 요나단과 그 병기 든 자를 대하여 가로되 우리에게로 올라오라 너희에게 한 일을 보이리라 한지라 요나단이 자기 병기 든 자에게 이르되 나를 따라 올라오라 여호와께서 그들을 이스라엘의 손에 붙이셨느니라 하고
13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearerㆍafter him: and they fellbeforeJonathan; and his armourbearerㆍslewafter him.[x]MKJV: And Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, and his armor-bearer after him. And they fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed after him. BBE: And Jonathan went up, gripping with his hands and his feet, his servant going up after him; and the Philistines gave way before Jonathan when he made an attack on them, and his servant put them to death after him. 13 And Jonathan went up, gripping with his hands and his feet, his servant going up after him; and the Philistines gave way before Jonathan when he made an attack on them, and his servant put them to death after him.
13 요나단이 손발로 붙잡고 올라갔고 그 병기 든 자도 따랐더라 블레셋 사람들이 요나단 앞에서 엎드러지매 병기 든 자가 따라가며 죽였으니
14 And that firstslaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearerㆍmade, was about twentymen, within as it were an halfacre of land, which a yokeof oxen might plow.[x]MKJV: And this [was] the first blow, when Jonathan and his armor-bearer struck about twenty men in about half of a furrow of an acre of a field. BBE: And at their first attack, Jonathan and his servant put to the sword about twenty men, all inside the space of half an acre of land. 14 And at their first attack, Jonathan and his servant put to the sword about twenty men, all inside the space of half an acre of land.

15 And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earthquaked: so it was a very greattrembling.[x]MKJV: And there was trembling in the army, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and the spoilers also trembled, and the earth quaked, and it was a very great trembling. BBE: And there was great fear in the tents and in the field and among all the men of the armed force, and the attackers were shaking with fear; even the earth was moved with a great shaking and there was a fear as from God. 15 들에 있는 진과 모든 백성 중에 떨림이 일어났고 부대와 노략군들도 떨었으며 땅도 진동하였으니 이는 큰 떨림이었더라
16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjaminlooked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating downone another.[x]MKJV: And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude had melted away and went on here and there. BBE: And the watchmen of Saul, looking out from Geba in the land of Benjamin, saw all the army flowing away and running here and there. KAV: 베냐민의 기브아에 있던 사울의 파수꾼이 바라보니, 보라, 많은 사람이 사라지고 그들이 서로를 내리치더라. 16 And the watchmen of Saul, looking out from Geba in the land of Benjamin, saw all the army flowing away and running here and there.

17 Then saidSaul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearerㆍwere not there.[x]MKJV: And Saul said to the people with him, Number now and see who is gone from us. And when they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor-bearer [were] not [there.] BBE: Then Saul said to the people who were with him, Let everyone be numbered and let us see who has gone from us. And when they had been numbered, it was seen that Jonathan and his servant were not there. KAV: 그때에 사울이 자기와 함께 있던 백성에게 이르되, 이제 수를 세어 우리에게서 누가 나갔는지 보라, 하므로 그들이 수를 세니, 보라, 거기에 요나단과 그의 병기를 드는 자가 없더라.
17 Then Saul said to the people who were with him, Let everyone be numbered and let us see who has gone from us. And when they had been numbered, it was seen that Jonathan and his servant were not there.
17 사울이 자기와 함께한 백성에게 이르되 우리에게서 누가 나갔는지 점고하여 보라 하고 점고한즉 요나단과 그의 병기 든 자가 없어졌더라
18 And Saulsaid unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.[x]MKJV: And Saul said to Ahiah, Bring the ark of God here. For the ark of God was at that time with the sons of Israel. BBE: And Saul said to Ahijah, Let the ephod come here. For he went before Israel with the ephod at that time. KAV: 사울이 아히야에게 이르되, [하나님]의 궤를 이리로 가져오라, 하였으니 [하나님]의 궤가 그때에 이스라엘 자손과 함께 있었더라. 18 And Saul said to Ahijah, Let the ephod come here. For he went before Israel with the ephod at that time.

19 And it came to pass, while Saultalked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistineswenton and increased: and Saulsaid unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.[x]MKJV: And it happened, while Saul talked to the priest, the noise in the army of the Philistines went on and grew greater. And Saul said to the priest, Withdraw your hand. BBE: Now while Saul was talking to the priest, the noise in the tents of the Philistines became louder and louder; and Saul said to the priest, Take back your hand. 19 Now while Saul was talking to the priest, the noise in the tents of the Philistines became louder and louder; and Saul said to the priest, Take back your hand.
19 사울이 제사장에게 말할 때에 블레셋 사람의 진에 소동이 점점 더한지라 사울이 제사장에게 이르되 네 손을 거두라 하고
20 And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man'ssword was against his fellow, and there was a verygreatdiscomfiture.[x]MKJV: And Saul and all the people with him gathered, and they went to the battle. And, behold, every man's sword [was] against his fellow, a very great panic. BBE: And Saul and all the people with him came together and went forward to the fight: and every man's sword was turned against the man at his side, and there was a very great noise. 20 And Saul and all the people with him came together and went forward to the fight: and every man's sword was turned against the man at his side, and there was a very great noise.

21 Moreover the Hebrewsthat were with the Philistinesbefore that time, which went up with them into the campfrom the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.[x]MKJV: And the Hebrews that [were] with the Philistines before, who had gone up with them into the camp all around, even they also [turned] to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. BBE: Then the Hebrews who had been with the Philistines for some time, and had gone up with them to their tents, turning round were joined to those who were with Saul and Jonathan. 21 Then the Hebrews who had been with the Philistines for some time, and had gone up with them to their tents, turning round were joined to those who were with Saul and Jonathan.
21 전에 블레셋 사람과 함께하던 히브리 사람이 사방에서 블레셋 사람과 함께 와서 진에 들어 왔더니 그들이 돌이켜 사울과 요나단과 함께 한 이스라엘 사람과 합하였고
22 Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mountEphraim, when they heard that the Philistinesfled, even they also followed hardafter them in the battle.[x]MKJV: And all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in mount Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, even they also followed them in the battle. BBE: And all the men of Israel who had taken cover in the hill-country of Ephraim, hearing that the Philistines had been put to flight, went after them, attacking them. 22 And all the men of Israel who had taken cover in the hill-country of Ephraim, hearing that the Philistines had been put to flight, went after them, attacking them.
22 에브라임 산지에 숨었던 이스라엘 모든 사람도 블레셋 사람의 도망함을 듣고 싸우러 나와서 그들을 추격하였더라
23 So the LORDsavedIsrael that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.[x]MKJV: And the LORD saved Israel that day, and the battle passed over to Beth-aven. 24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursedbe the man that eatethanyfood until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. For Saul had commanded the people, saying, Cursed [is] the man that eats food until evening, so that I may be avenged on my enemies. So none of the people tasted any food. BBE: And all the people were with Saul, about twenty thousand men, and the fight was general through all the hill-country of Ephraim; but Saul made a great error that day, by putting the people under an oath, saying, Let that man be cursed who takes food before evening comes and I have given punishment to those who are against me. So the people had not a taste of food.

25 And all they of the landcame to a wood; and there was honeyupon the ground.[x]MKJV: And all the [men of] the land came into a forest, and there was honey on the ground. 25 And there was honey on the face of the field, and all the people came to the honey, the bees having gone from it;

26 And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honeydropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the peoplefeared the oath.[x]MKJV: And when the people had come into the woods, behold, a flow of honey! 27 But Jonathanheard not when his fathercharged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycombㆍ, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.[x]MKJV: But Jonathan did not hear when his father made the people swear. And [he] put forth the end of the rod in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth. And his eyes were lightened. 27 But Jonathan, having no knowledge of the oath his father had put on the people, stretching out the rod which was in his hand, put the end of it in the honey, and put it to his mouth; then his eyes were made bright.

28 Then answeredone of the people, and said, Thy fatherstraitlycharged the people with an oath, saying, Cursedbe the man that eatethanyfood this day. And the people were faint.[x]MKJV: And one from the people answered and said, Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed [is] the man who eats food this day. And the people were weary. BBE: Then one of the people said to him, Your father put the people under an oath, saying, Let that man be cursed who takes any food this day. 28 Then one of the people said to him, Your father put the people under an oath, saying, Let that man be cursed who takes any food this day. And the people were feeble, needing food.

29 Then saidJonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.[x]MKJV: Then Jonathan said, My father has troubled the land. Please see how my eyes have been lightened because I tasted a little of this honey. BBE: Then Jonathan said, My father has made trouble come on the land: now see how bright my eyes have become because I have taken a little of this honey. 29 Then Jonathan said, My father has made trouble come on the land: now see how bright my eyes have become because I have taken a little of this honey.
29 요나단이 가로되 내 부친이 이 땅으로 곤란케 하셨도다 보라 내가 이 꿀 조금을 맛보고도 내 눈이 이렇게 밝았거든
30 How much more, if haply the people had eatenfreely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greaterslaughter among the Philistines?[x]MKJV: How much more if the people had happened to eat freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found? For would not there have been a much greater slaughter among the Philistines? BBE: How much more if the people had freely taken their food from the goods of those who were fighting against them! would there not have been much greater destruction among the Philistines? 30 How much more if the people had freely taken their food from the goods of those who were fighting against them! would there not have been much greater destruction among the Philistines?

31 And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were veryfaint.[x]MKJV: And they struck the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon, and the people were very faint. 31 That day they overcame the Philistines from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were feeble from need of food.

32 And the peopleflewㆍ upon the spoil, and tooksheep, and oxen, and calves, and slewthem on the ground: and the people did eatthem with the blood.[x]MKJV: And the people flew on the spoil, and took sheep and oxen and calves, and killed [them] on the ground. And the people ate with the blood. BBE: And rushing at the goods taken in the fight, the people took oxen and sheep and young oxen, and put them to death there on the earth, and had a meal, taking the flesh with the blood in it. 32 And rushing at the goods taken in the fight, the people took oxen and sheep and young oxen, and put them to death there on the earth, and had a meal, taking the flesh with the blood in it.

33 Then they toldSaul, saying, Behold, the peoplesin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a greatstone unto me this day.[x]MKJV: And they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD in that they eat with the blood. And he said, You have transgressed. Roll a great stone to me today. BBE: Then it was said to Saul, See, the people are sinning against the Lord, taking the blood with the flesh. And he said to those who gave him the news, Now let a great stone be rolled to me here. 33 Then it was said to Saul, See, the people are sinning against the Lord, taking the blood with the flesh. And he said to those who gave him the news, Now let a great stone be rolled to me here.
33 무리가 사울에게 고하여 가로되 보소서 백성이 고기를 피채 먹어 여호와께 범죄하였나이다 사울이 가로되 너희가 무신하게 행하였도다 이제 큰 돌을 내게로 굴려 오라 하고
34 And Saulsaid, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slaythem here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the peoplebrought every man his ox with him that night, and slewthem there.[x]MKJV: And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, Let each one bring his ox here, and each man his sheep, and kill [them] here, and eat. And do not sin against the LORD in eating with the blood. And each man of all the people brought his ox in his hand that night, and killed them there. BBE: And Saul said, Go about among the people and say to them, Let every man come here to me with his ox and his sheep, and put them to death here, and take his meal: do no sin against the Lord by taking the blood with the flesh. So all the people took their oxen with them that night and put them to death there. 34 And Saul said, Go about among the people and say to them, Let every man come here to me with his ox and his sheep, and put them to death here, and take his meal: do no sin against the Lord by taking the blood with the flesh. So all the people took their oxen with them that night and put them to death there.
34 또 가로되 너희는 백성 중에 흩어져 다니며 이르기를 사람은 각기 소와 각기 양을 이리로 끌어다가 잡아 먹되 피 있는 채 먹어서 여호와께 범죄하지 말라 하매 그 밤에 모든 백성이 각각 자기의 소를 끌어다가 거기서 잡으니라
35 And Saulbuilt an altar unto the LORD: the same was the firstaltar that he built unto the LORD.[x]MKJV: And Saul built an altar to the LORD. The same was the first altar that he built to the LORD. 35 And Saul put up an altar to the Lord: this was the first altar which he put up to the Lord.

36 And Saulsaid, Let us go downafter the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morninglight, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemethgood unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw nearhither unto God.[x]MKJV: And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do all that seems good to you. Then the priest said, Let us draw near here to God. BBE: And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, attacking them till the morning, till there is not a man of them living. And they said, Do whatever seems right to you. Then the priest said, Let us come near to God. 37 And Saulasked counsel of God, Shall I go downafter the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.[x]MKJV: And Saul asked counsel of God: Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You deliver them into the hand of Israel? But He answered him not that day. BBE: And Saul, desiring directions from God, said, Am I to go down after the Philistines? will you give them up into the hands of Israel? But he gave him no answer that day. 38 And Saulsaid, Draw ye nearhither, all the chief of the people: and know and seewherein this sin hath been this day.[x]MKJV: And Saul said, Draw near here, all the chief of the people, and know and see what this sin has been today. BBE: And Saul said, Come near, all you chiefs of the people, and let us get word from God and see in whom is this sin today. KAV: 사울이 이르되, 너희 백성의 모든 우두머리들아, 여기로 가까이 오라. 이 날 이 죄가 어디에 있는지 알고 살펴보라. 38 And Saul said, Come near, all you chiefs of the people, and let us get word from God and see in whom is this sin today.

39 For, as the LORDliveth, which savethIsrael, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surelydie. But there was not a man among all the peoplethatanswered him.[x]MKJV: For, [as] the LORD lives, He who saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people who answered. BBE: For, by the living Lord, the saviour of Israel, even if the sinner is Jonathan, my son, death will certainly be his fate. But not a man among all the people gave him any answer. KAV: 이스라엘을 구원하시는 {주}께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 그 죄가 내 아들 요나단에게 있다 할지라도 그가 반드시 죽으리라, 하되 온 백성 가운데서 그에게 대답하는 자가 하나도 없더라. 40 Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on oneside, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the otherside. And the peoplesaid unto Saul, Do what seemethgood unto thee.[x]MKJV: Then he said to all Israel, You be on one side, and Jonathan my son and I will be on the other side. And the people said to Saul, Do what seems good to you. BBE: Then he said to all Israel, You be on one side, and I with Jonathan my son will be on the other side. 40 Then he said to all Israel, You be on one side, and I with Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said to Saul, Do whatever seems good to you.

41 Therefore Saulsaid unto the LORDGod of Israel, Give a perfectlot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the peopleescaped.[x]MKJV: And Saul said to the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect [lot]. And Saul and Jonathan were taken, but the people escaped. BBE: Then Saul said to the Lord, the God of Israel, Why have you not given me an answer today? If the sin is in me or in Jonathan my son, O Lord God of Israel, give Urim, and if it is in your people Israel, give Thummim. And by the decision of the Lord, Saul and Jonathan were marked out, and the people went free. 42 And Saulsaid, Castlots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.[x]MKJV: And Saul said, Cast [lots] between me and my son Jonathan. And Jonathan was taken. 42 And Saul said, Give your decision between my son Jonathan and me. And Jonathan was taken.

43 Then Saulsaid to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathantold him, and said, I did buttaste a littlehoney with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and,lo, I must die.[x]MKJV: Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what you have done. And Jonathan told him and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod in my hand. Behold me, I must die. BBE: Then Saul said to Jonathan, Give me an account of what you have done. 44 And Saul said, May God's punishment be on me if death is not your fate, Jonathan.

45 And the peoplesaid unto Saul, Shall Jonathandie, who hath wrought this greatsalvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORDliveth, there shall not one hair of his headfall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the peoplerescuedJonathan, that he died not.[x]MKJV: And the people said to Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who has worked out this great salvation in Israel? Far be it! [As] the LORD lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, so that he did not die.
