1 Then about a month after this, Nahash the Ammonite came up and put his forces in position for attacking Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, Make an agreement with us and we will be your servants.

2 And Nahash the Ammoniteanswered them, On thiscondition will I makea covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your righteyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.[x]MKJV: And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, With this I will make a covenant with you, when all your right eyes are dug out and I will make it a reproach on all Israel. BBE: And Nahash the Ammonite said to them, I will make an agreement with you on this condition, that all your right eyes are put out; so that I may make it a cause of shame to all Israel. 2 And Nahash the Ammonite said to them, I will make an agreement with you on this condition, that all your right eyes are put out; so that I may make it a cause of shame to all Israel.

3 And the elders of Jabeshsaid unto him, Give us sevendaysrespite, that we may sendmessengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.[x]MKJV: And the elders of Jabesh said to him, Bear with us seven days, so that we may send messengers to all the territory of Israel. And then if [there is] no man to save us, we will come out to you. BBE: Then the responsible men of Jabesh said to him, Give us seven days, so that we may send men to every part of Israel: and then, if no one comes to our help, we will come out to you. KAV: 야베스의 장로들이 그에게 이르되, 우리에게 이레 동안의 유예 기간을 주어 우리가 이스라엘 온 지역에 사자들을 보내게 하라. 우리를 구원할 사람이 없으면 우리가 네게로 나아가리라, 하니라.
3 Then the responsible men of Jabesh said to him, Give us seven days, so that we may send men to every part of Israel: and then, if no one comes to our help, we will come out to you.
3 야베스 장로들이 이르되 우리에게 이레 유예를 주어 우리로 이스라엘 온 지경에 사자를 보내게 하라 우리를 구원할 자가 없으면 네게 나아가리라 하니라
4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.[x]MKJV: Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and told the news in ears of the people. And all the people lifted up their voices and wept. BBE: So they sent representatives to Saul's town Gibeah, and these gave the news to the people: and all the people gave themselves to weeping. 4 So they sent representatives to Saul's town Gibeah, and these gave the news to the people: and all the people gave themselves to weeping.

5 And, behold, Saulcameafter the herd out of the field; and Saulsaid, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.[x]MKJV: And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field. And Saul said, What [is wrong] with the people that they weep? And they told him the words of the men of Jabesh. BBE: Now Saul came from the field, driving the oxen before him; and he said, Why are the people weeping? 5 Now Saul came from the field, driving the oxen before him; and he said, Why are the people weeping? And they gave him word of what the men of Jabesh had said.
5 마침 사울이 밭에서 소를 몰고 오다가 가로되 백성이 무슨 일로 우느냐 그들이 야베스 사람의 말로 고하니라
6 And the spirit of Godcame upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindledgreatly.[x]MKJV: And the Spirit of God came powerfully on Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly. BBE: And at their words, the spirit of God came on Saul with power, and he became very angry. 6 And at their words, the spirit of God came on Saul with power, and he became very angry.
6 사울이 이 말을 들을 때에 하나님의 신에게 크게 감동되매 그 노가 크게 일어나서
7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sentthem throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forthafterSaul and afterSamuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. 7 And he took two oxen and, cutting them up, sent them through all the land of Israel by the hand of runners, saying, If any man does not come out after Saul and Samuel, this will be done to his oxen. And the fear of the Lord came on the people and they came out like one man.
7 한 겨리 소를 취하여 각을 뜨고 사자의 손으로 그것을 이스라엘 모든 지경에 두루 보내어 가로되 누구든지 나와서 사울과 사무엘을 좇지 아니하면 그 소들도 이와 같이 하리라 하였더니 여호와의 두려움이 백성에게 임하매 그들이 한 사람같이 나온지라
8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were threehundredthousand, and the men of Judahthirtythousand.[x]MKJV: And when he numbered them in Bezek, the sons of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 8 And he had them numbered in Bezek: the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgileadㆍ, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengerscame and showedit to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.[x]MKJV: And they said to the messengers that came, So shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, Tomorrow by [the time] the sun is hot, you shall have help. And the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, and they were glad. And the representatives came and gave the news to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. 9 Then he said to the representatives who had come, Say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, Tomorrow, by the time the sun is high, you will be made safe. And the representatives came and gave the news to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
9 무리가 온 사자들에게 이르되 너희는 길르앗 야베스 사람에게 이같이 이르기를 내일 해가 더울 때에 너희가 구원을 얻으리라 하라 사자들이 돌아가서 야베스 사람들에게 고하매 그들이 기뻐하니라
10 Therefore the men of Jabeshsaid, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemethgood unto you.[x]MKJV: And the men of Jabesh said, Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you. BBE: So the men of Jabesh said, Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you. KAV: 그러므로 야베스 사람들이 이르되, 우리가 내일 너희에게 나아가리니 너희 보기에 좋은 대로 너희가 우리에게 다 행하라, 하니라. 10 So the men of Jabesh said, Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.

11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saulput the people in threecompanies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morningwatch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not lefttogether.[x]MKJV: And it was [so] on the next day, Saul put the people in three companies, and they came into the middle of the army at the morning watch. And they killed the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And the ones who remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together. BBE: Now on the day after, Saul put the people into three bands, and in the morning watch they came to the tents of the Ammonites, and they went on attacking them till the heat of the day: and those who were not put to death were put to flight in every direction, so that no two of them were together. 11 이튿날에 사울이 백성을 삼대에 나누고 새벽에 적진 중에 들어가서 날이 더울 때까지 암몬 사람을 치매 남은 자가 다 흩어져서 둘도 함께한 자가 없었더라
12 And the peoplesaid unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saulreign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.[x]MKJV: And the people said to Samuel, Who [is] he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? Bring the men so that we may put them to death. BBE: And the people said to Samuel, Who was it who said, Is Saul to be our king? give the men up, so that we may put them to death. 12 And the people said to Samuel, Who was it who said, Is Saul to be our king? give the men up, so that we may put them to death.

13 And Saulsaid, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wroughtsalvation in Israel.[x]MKJV: And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day, for today the LORD has worked salvation in Israel. BBE: And Saul said, Not a man is to be put to death today: for today the Lord has made Israel safe. KAV: 사울이 이르되, {주}께서 오늘 이스라엘 안에서 구원을 이루셨으므로 이 날에는 사람을 죽이지 못하리라, 하니라. 13 And Saul said, Not a man is to be put to death today: for today the Lord has made Israel safe.

14 Then saidSamuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.[x]MKJV: Then Samuel said to the people, Come and let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingdom there. BBE: Then Samuel said to the people, Come, let us go to Gilgal and there make the kingdom strong in the hands of Saul. 14 Then Samuel said to the people, Come, let us go to Gilgal and there make the kingdom strong in the hands of Saul.
14 사무엘이 백성에게 이르되 오라 우리가 길갈로 가서 나라를 새롭게 하자
15 And all the peoplewent to Gilgal; and there they made Saulkingbefore the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificedsacrifices of peace offeringsbefore the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israelrejoicedgreatly.[x]MKJV: And all the people went [to] Gilgal, and made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal, and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD. And there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. BBE: So all the people went to Gilgal; and there in Gilgal they made Saul king before the Lord; and peace-offerings were offered before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel were glad with great joy. 15 So all the people went to Gilgal; and there in Gilgal they made Saul king before the Lord; and peace-offerings were offered before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel were glad with great joy.
15 모든 백성이 길갈로 가서 거기서 여호와 앞에 사울로 왕을 삼고 거기서 여호와 앞에 화목제를 드리고 사울과 이스라엘 모든 사람이 거기서 크게 기뻐하니라
