Elders exhorted and encouraged. (1-4) Younger Christians are to submit to their elders, and to yield with humility and patience to God, and to be sober, watchful, and stedfast in faith. (5-9) Prayers for their growth and establishment. (10-14)

| 1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: | 1 I who am myself one of the rulers of the church, and a witness of the death of Christ, having my part in the coming glory, send this serious request to the chief men among you: | 1 너희 중 장로들에게 권하노니 나는 함께 장로 된 자요 그리스도의 고난의 증인이요 나타날 영광에 참예할 자로라 |
| 2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; | 2 Keep watch over the flock of God which is in your care, using your authority, not as forced to do so, but gladly; and not for unclean profit but with a ready mind; | 2 너희 중에 있는 하나님의 양 무리를 치되 부득이함으로 하지 말고 오직 하나님의 뜻을 좇아 자원함으로 하며 더러운 이를 위하여 하지 말고 오직 즐거운 뜻으로 하며 |
| 3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. | 3 Not as lords over God's heritage, but making yourselves examples to the flock.
| 4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. | 4 And at the coming of the chief Keeper of the sheep, you will be given the eternal crown of glory.
| 5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. | 5 And in the same way, let the younger men be ruled by the older ones. Let all of you put away pride and make yourselves ready to be servants: for God is a hater of pride, but he gives grace to those who make themselves low.
| 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: | 6 For this cause make yourselves low under the strong hand of God, so that when the time comes you may be lifted up; | 6 그러므로 하나님의 능하신 손 아래서 겸손하라 때가 되면 너희를 높이시리라 |
| 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. | 7 Putting all your troubles on him, for he takes care of you.
| 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: | 8 Be serious and keep watch; the Evil One, who is against you, goes about like a lion with open mouth in search of food; | 8 근신하라 깨어라 너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니 |
| 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. | 9 Do not give way to him but be strong in your faith, in the knowledge that your brothers who are in the world undergo the same troubles.
| 10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while ㆍ, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. | 10 And after you have undergone pain for a little time, the God of all grace who has given you a part in his eternal glory through Christ Jesus, will himself give you strength and support, and make you complete in every good thing; | 10 모든 은혜의 하나님 곧 그리스도 안에서 너희를 부르사 자기의 영원한 영광에 들어가게 하신 이가 잠간 고난을 받은 너희를 친히 온전케 하시며 굳게 하시며 강하게 하시며 터를 견고케 하시리라 |
| 11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. | 11 His is the power for ever. So be it.
| 12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly ㆍ, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand. | 12 I have sent you this short letter by Silvanus, a true brother, in my opinion; comforting you and witnessing that this is the true grace of God; keep to it.
| 13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son. | 13 She who is in Babylon, who has a part with you in the purpose of God, sends you her love; and so does my son Mark.
| 14 Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen. | 14 Give one another the kiss of love. Peace be to you all in Christ.
