1 Then there was a great outcry from the people and their wives against their countrymen the Jews.

2 For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, aremany: therefore we take upcornfor them, that we may eat, and live.[x]MKJV: For certain ones said, We, our sons, and our daughters, [are] many. Let us get grain for them, so that we may eat and live. BBE: For there were some who said, We, our sons and our daughters, are a great number: let us get grain, so that we may have food for our needs. 2 For there were some who said, We, our sons and our daughters, are a great number: let us get grain, so that we may have food for our needs.

3 And there were some who said, We are giving our fields and our vine-gardens and our houses for debt: let us get grain because we are in need.

4 There were also that said, We have borrowedmoney for the king'stribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.[x]MKJV: And [some] said, We have borrowed money on our lands and vineyards for the king's tax. BBE: And there were others who said, We have given up our fields and our vine-gardens to get money for the king's taxes. KAV: 또 몇 사람은 말하기를, 우리는 왕의 세금을 바치려고 우리의 밭과 포도원을 맡기고 돈을 빌렸도다. 4 And there were others who said, We have given up our fields and our vine-gardens to get money for the king's taxes.

5 Yet now our fleshis as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughtersare brought unto bondagealready: neither is it in our powerto redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.[x]MKJV: Yet now our flesh [is] like the flesh of our brothers, our sons like their sons. And, lo, we bring our sons and our daughters into bondage, to be slaves, and [some] of our daughters are brought into bondage. And [there is] no power for our hand, for other men have our lands and vineyards. BBE: But our flesh is the same as the flesh of our countrymen, and our children as their children: and now we are giving our sons and daughters into the hands of others, to be their servants, and some of our daughters are servants even now: and we have no power to put a stop to it; for other men have our fields and our vine-gardens. 5 But our flesh is the same as the flesh of our countrymen, and our children as their children: and now we are giving our sons and daughters into the hands of others, to be their servants, and some of our daughters are servants even now: and we have no power to put a stop to it; for other men have our fields and our vine-gardens.
5 우리 육체도 우리 형제의 육체와 같고 우리 자녀도 저희 자녀 같거늘 이제 우리 자녀를 종으로 파는도다 우리 딸 중에 벌써 종된 자가 있으나 우리의 밭과 포도원이 이미 남의 것이 되었으니 속량할 힘이 없도다
6 And I was veryangry when I heard their cry and these words.[x]MKJV: And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words. BBE: And on hearing their outcry and what they said I was very angry. 6 And on hearing their outcry and what they said I was very angry.

7 Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exactusury, every one of his brother. And I set a greatassembly against them.[x]MKJV: And my heart within myself ruled, and I rebuked the nobles and the rulers, and said to them, You exact interest, [each] one from his brother. And I held a great gathering against them. BBE: And after turning it over in my mind, I made a protest to the chiefs and the rulers, and said to them, Every one of you is taking interest from his countryman. And I got together a great meeting of protest. 8 And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and foundnothingto answer.[x]MKJV: And I said to them, According to our ability we have redeemed our brothers, the Jews who were sold to the nations. And will you even sell your brothers? Or shall they be sold to us? And they were silent and did not find an answer. BBE: And I said to them, We have given whatever we were able to give, to make our brothers the Jews free, who were servants and prisoners of the nations: and would you now give up your brothers for a price, and are they to become our property? Then they said nothing, answering not a word. 8 And I said to them, We have given whatever we were able to give, to make our brothers the Jews free, who were servants and prisoners of the nations: and would you now give up your brothers for a price, and are they to become our property? Then they said nothing, answering not a word.
8 이르기를 우리는 이방인의 손에 팔린 우리 형제 유다 사람들을 우리의 힘을 다하여 속량하였거늘 너희는 너희 형제를 팔고자 하느냐 더구나 우리의 손에 팔리게 하겠느냐 하매 저희가 잠잠하여 말이 없기로
9 Also I said, It is not goodthat ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?[x]MKJV: And I said, What you do [is] not good. Should you not walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the nations our enemies? BBE: And I said, What you are doing is not good: is it not the more necessary for you to go in the fear of our God, because of the shame which the nations may put on us? KAV: 내가 또 이르되, 너희가 행하는 바가 좋지 못하도다. 우리의 원수 이교도들이 모욕하므로 너희가 마땅히 우리 [하나님]을 두려워하며 걸어야 하지 아니하겠느냐? 9 And I said, What you are doing is not good: is it not the more necessary for you to go in the fear of our God, because of the shame which the nations may put on us?

10 I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.[x]MKJV: And also I, my brothers and my servants, might take from them silver and grain. Please let us leave this lending at interest. BBE: Even I and my servants have been taking interest for the money and the grain we have let them have. So now, let us give up this thing. KAV: 나와 내 형제와 내 종들도 마찬가지로 돈과 곡식을 그들에게서 취할 수 있노라. 청하건대 우리가 이자 받는 이 일을 그치자. 10 Even I and my servants have been taking interest for the money and the grain we have let them have. So now, let us give up this thing.
10 나와 내 형제와 종자들도 역시 돈과 곡식을 백성에게 취하여 주나니 우리가 그 이식 받기를 그치자
11Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredthpart of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.[x]MKJV: Please even today give back to them their lands, their vineyards, their olive-yards, and their houses, also the hundredth [part] of the money and of the grain, the wine, and the oil, that you take from them. BBE: Give back to them this very day their fields, their vine-gardens, their olive-gardens, and their houses, as well as a hundredth part of the money and the grain and the wine and the oil which you have taken from them. 11 그런즉 너희는 오늘이라도 그 밭과 포도원과 감람원과 집이며 취한바 돈이나 곡식이나 새 포도주나 기름의 백분지 일을 돌려 보내라 하였더니
12 Then said they, We will restorethem, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.[x]MKJV: And they said, We will restore, and will ask nothing from them. So we will do as you say. Then I called the priests and took an oath from them that they should do according to this promise. BBE: Then they said, We will give them back, and take nothing for them; we will do as you say. Then I sent for the priests and made them take an oath that they would keep this agreement. 13 Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregationsaid, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the peopledid according to this promise.[x]MKJV: Also I shook my lap and said, So let God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, who does not keep this promise, even may he be shaken out this way and emptied. And all the congregation said, amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise. BBE: And shaking out the folds of my robe, I said, So may God send out from his house and his work every man who does not keep this agreement; even so let him be sent out and made as nothing. And all the meeting of the people said, So be it, and gave praise to the Lord. And the people did as they had said. 13 내가 옷자락을 떨치며 이르기를 이 말대로 행치 아니하는 자는 하나님이 또한 이와 같이 그 집과 산업에서 떨치실찌니 저는 곧 이렇게 떨쳐져 빌찌로다 하매 회중이 다 아멘 하고 여호와를 찬송하고 백성들이 그 말한대로 행하였느니라
14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentiethyear even unto the two and thirtiethyear of Artaxerxes the king, that is,twelveㆍyears, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.[x]MKJV: And from the time that I was chosen to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years, I and my brothers have not eaten the bread of the governor. BBE: Now from the time when I was made ruler of the people in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year till the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, for twelve years, I and my servants have never taken the food which was the right of the ruler. KAV: ¶ 또한 유다 땅에서 내가 그들의 총독으로 임명을 받은 때 곧 아닥사스다 왕의 제이십년부터 제삼십이년까지 즉 십이 년 동안은 나와 내 형제들이 총독의 빵을 먹지 아니하였노라. 14 Now from the time when I was made ruler of the people in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year till the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, for twelve years, I and my servants have never taken the food which was the right of the ruler.
14 내가 유다 땅 총독으로 세움을 받은 때 곧 아닥사스다왕 이십년부터 삼십 이년까지 십 이년 동안은 나와 내 형제가 총독의 녹을 먹지 아니하였느니라
15 But the formergovernors that had beenbefore me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, besidefortyshekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.[x]MKJV: But the former governors that [had been] before me were too heavy upon the people, and had taken bread and wine from them, besides forty shekels of silver. Yes, even their servants bore rule over the people. But I did not do this, because of the fear of God. BBE: But earlier rulers who were before me made the people responsible for their upkeep, and took from them bread and wine at the rate of forty shekels of silver; and even their servants were lords over the people: but I did not do so, because of the fear of God. 15 이전 총독들은 백성에게 토색하여 양식과 포도주와 또 은 사십 세겔을 취하였고 그 종자들도 백성을 압제하였으나 나는 하나님을 경외하므로 이같이 행치 아니하고
16 Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servantsweregathered thither unto the work.[x]MKJV: And I also kept on in the work of this wall. Nor did we buy any land. And all my servants gathered there to the work. BBE: And I kept on with the work of this wall, and we got no land for ourselves: and all my servants were helping with the work. KAV: 참으로 또한 이 성벽 공사를 계속하며 우리가 땅을 사지 아니하였고 내 모든 종들도 거기로 모여 그 일을 하였노라. 17 Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fiftyof the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.[x]MKJV: And at my table [were] a hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, besides those who came to us from among the nations around us. BBE: And more than this, a hundred and fifty of the Jews and the rulers were guests at my table, in addition to those who came to us from the nations round about us. KAV: 또 내 상에는 유대인들과 치리자 백오십 명이 있었고 그 외에도 우리 주변의 이교도들 중에서 떠나 우리에게로 나아온 자들이 있었으므로 TSK: at my table: 2sa 9:7,13, 1ki 18:19; an hundred: isa 32:8, ro 12:13, 1pe 4:9,10
17 And more than this, a hundred and fifty of the Jews and the rulers were guests at my table, in addition to those who came to us from the nations round about us.
17 또 내 상에는 유다 사람들과 민장들 일백 오십인이 있고 그 외에도 우리 사면 이방인 중에서 우리에게 나아온 자들이 있었는데
18 Now that which was preparedfor medailywasoneoxandsixchoicesheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in tendaysstore of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.[x]MKJV: And that which [was] prepared daily [was] one ox and six choice sheep; and birds were prepared; and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine. Yet for all this I did not seek the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people. BBE: Now the food made ready for one day was one ox and six fat sheep, as well as fowls; and once in ten days a store of all sorts of wine: but all the same, I did not take the food to which the ruler had a right, because the people were crushed under a hard yoke. KAV: 이제 사람들이 날마다 나를 위해 소 한 마리와 좋은 양 여섯 마리를 예비하며 날짐승도 나를 위해 예비하고 열흘에 한 번씩은 각종 포도즙을 준비하였더라. 그러나 이 모든 것을 위해 내가 총독의 빵을 요구하지 아니하였으니 이는 이 백성에게 임한 속박이 심하였기 때문이라. 18 매일 나를 위하여 소 하나와 살진 양 여섯을 준비하며 닭도 많이 준비하고 열흘에 한번씩은 각종 포도주를 갖추었나니 비록 이같이 하였을찌라도 내가 총독의 녹을 요구하지 아니하였음은 백성의 부역이 중함이니라
19Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.[x]MKJV: Think upon me, my God, for good, [according] to all that I have done for this people.
